KDP Trim Sizes: Which Size for Which Book (Chart, Page Limits, Print Cost), 2026
Every KDP paperback trim size in one chart with page limits per ink and paper, regular vs large print cost and Expanded Distribution eligibility, plus a picker that recommends a size for your book and estimates its pages, spine and print cost.
Quick Answer
Use 6 x 9 in for non-fiction and memoir, 5 x 8 to 5.5 x 8.5 in for novels, 8.5 x 11 in for workbooks and coloring books, 8 x 10 in for cookbooks and 8.5 x 8.5 in for picture books. Any trim wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in is a "large trim" and costs more to print.
Trim size is the first print setting KDP asks for, and it quietly decides three other things: how many pages your book has, how thick the spine is, and what Amazon charges to print each copy. Pick the wrong one and a novel can cost $2 more per copy than it needs to, or a workbook can miss the bookshop channel you were counting on.
Every limit, price and eligibility rule comes from Amazon's own KDP help pages, read on 13 October 2026. The page counts come from a real layout test: we set two public-domain books, a novel and a non-fiction guide, at all ten trims our AI book formatter exports and counted the pages. We did not order printed proofs for this guide. If you are past choosing a size and on to setting up the file, our guide to formatting a book for KDP covers margins and the gutter.
KDP trim size chart (checked 13 Oct 2026)
KDP lists 16 paperback trim sizes on its US site, plus a custom option. Trim size is written width first, so 8.25 x 6 in is a landscape book. The page ranges below are KDP's minimum and maximum page counts for each ink and paper. "Large" means more than 6.12 in wide or more than 9 in tall, which KDP prices differently. A5 and B5 come from KDP's Japan list; on kdp.amazon.com they go in as custom sizes.

Sources: KDP, Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins; Print Options; Expanded Distribution; all checked 13 Oct 2026. A5 and B5 page ranges are from KDP's Japan list. Custom paperback trims: 4 to 8.5 in wide, 6 to 11.69 in tall.
Four things in that chart decide most choices:
- The 6.12 in line. 6 x 9 in is regular; 6.14 x 9.21 in, only 0.14 in wider, is large and costs more on every copy. Everything from 7 x 10 in up is large.
- Big trims have lower page caps. 8.5 x 8.5 in and 8.5 x 11 in stop at 590 pages on white paper and 550 on cream, against 828 and 776 at most other sizes.
- Cream paper narrows your bookshop options. Cream and groundwood only qualify for Expanded Distribution at 5 x 8, 5.25 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9 in.
- Squares and landscapes are niche. 8.25 x 8.25 in and 8.25 x 6 in cannot join Expanded Distribution with any ink, and 8.5 x 8.5 in only in colour.

KDP will print almost any book at almost any size, so the real constraint is what readers expect and what the content needs. These are the conventions we follow, with the trim we pick first for each kind of book:
| Book | Our first pick | Also common | Ink and paper | Cover finish | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Novel | 5.5 x 8.5 (5 x 8 under 40,000 words, 6 x 9 over 110,000) | 5 x 8, 5.25 x 8, 6 x 9 | Black on cream | Matte | Sits in one hand; short books gain pages, long books stay under the cream limit |
| Memoir or biography | 6 x 9 | 5.5 x 8.5 | Black on cream | Matte | The shelf standard for life stories |
| Self-help, business, how-to | 6 x 9 (5.5 x 8.5 under 20,000 words) | 5.5 x 8.5, 7 x 10 | Black on white | Glossy | KDP's most common size; short guides look thin at 6 x 9 |
| Children's chapter book, middle grade | 5.5 x 8.5 | 5 x 8, 6 x 9 | Black on white | Glossy | Novel sizes with roomier type |
| Poetry | 5.5 x 8.5 | 5 x 8, 6 x 9 | Black on cream | Matte | Keeps most lines whole; 6 x 9 for long lines |
| Textbook, manual, technical | 7 x 10 | 8 x 10, 8.5 x 11, B5 | White or standard colour | Glossy | Tables, code and diagrams need width |
| Workbook, journal, planner | 8.5 x 11 | 7 x 10, 8 x 10, A4 | Black on white | Glossy | Writing space and a page that lies open |
| Cookbook | 8 x 10 | 7 x 10, 8.5 x 11 | Premium or standard colour | Glossy | A recipe and its photo on one spread |
| Picture book | 8.5 x 8.5 | 8 x 10, 8.5 x 11 | Premium colour | Glossy | Classic square; Expanded Distribution in colour |
| Coloring or activity book | 8.5 x 11 | 8.5 x 8.5, 8 x 10 | Black on white | Glossy | Room to colour and cut |
| Photo or art book | 8.5 x 11 | 8.5 x 8.5, 8 x 10 | Premium colour | Glossy | The biggest page for the pictures |
The finish column follows KDP's own guidance: its Print Options page says a glossy finish is typical for textbooks, children's books and non-fiction, and matte is typical for novels and other fiction.
Novels
Fiction readers expect a book that fits in one hand and a coat pocket, which is why trade novels cluster between 5 x 8 in and 6 x 9 in. The trim also sets how thick the book looks. A 40,000-word novella is about 260 pages at 5 x 8 in and 182 at 6 x 9 in on our measurements, so the smaller trim gives a thicker spine. A very long novel goes the other way: in our test a 121,722-word novel needed 780 pages at 5 x 8 in, past the 776-page limit for cream paper, so 6 x 9 in is the practical choice above about 110,000 words. For writing the book itself, see the AI novel generator for KDP.
Non-fiction, memoir and business books
6 x 9 in is the default for good reason: it is KDP's most common size, it is a regular trim, and it can join Expanded Distribution with any paper. The exception is the short guide. Under about 20,000 words, 6 x 9 in can produce a thin book with a blank spine, and 5.5 x 8.5 in adds pages without changing the print cost (both are regular trims). Memoir and biography usually go on cream at 6 x 9 in; the memoir guide covers the writing side, and the AI business book writer and self-help book writer cover the rest.
Workbooks, journals and planners
Writing space needs a big page, so 8.5 x 11 in is the standard and 7 x 10 in the lighter option. Check the content rules before counting on bookshops: KDP's Expanded Distribution page says its distributors do not currently accept journals, notebooks, planners and workbooks, so these books sell on Amazon whatever the trim. Our workbook generator and journal generator export at these sizes, and how to sell workbooks covers pricing and listings. Blank and lined journals, notebooks and planners are usually low-content books on KDP, which changes the ISBN, Look Inside and review rules; our low-content books guide covers what the box changes.
Cookbooks
A recipe works best when the ingredients, the method and the photo fit on one spread that stays open on the counter. 8 x 10 in does that without the bulk of Letter size. Most cookbooks print in colour, which is where trim matters most for cost (see the cost section). Cookbooks are also on the list of content KDP's distributors do not currently accept for Expanded Distribution. For tools and process, see the best AI cookbook generators and how to write a cookbook with AI.
Picture books, coloring books and poetry
Picture books are almost always square (8.5 x 8.5 in) or portrait (8 x 10 in), in premium colour, and they run into the 24-page minimum; our children's book publishing guide covers their bleed, page count and cost in detail. Coloring books sit at 8.5 x 11 in, usually one design per sheet with the back left blank; see how to sell coloring books. Poetry suits 5.5 x 8.5 in or 6 x 9 in so that most lines fit without wrapping; our guide to publishing a poetry book covers the ebook side.
Trim picker: pages, spine and print cost for your book
Choose what you are publishing and the picker suggests a trim, then estimates the page count, spine width, print cost and royalty at every KDP trim, with the page limits and Expanded Distribution rules applied. Change the paper, the marketplace or the list price and everything updates. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
How the page estimate works: we measured words per page at each trim by laying out a real novel and a real non-fiction book at all ten trims we export (details in the test below), with the same body type, about 11.8 pt, and the same margins as our KDP export. The picker uses those measured figures (for example 228 words per page for fiction and 217 for non-fiction at 6 x 9 in), adds 6 pages for the title page, copyright page and contents, and rounds up to an even number as KDP does. For the eight KDP trims we do not export, it estimates words per page from the size of the text area. Larger type, more headings, images or worksheets all add pages, so use the "extra pages" box for those and treat the result as a planning estimate.

Every KDP trim for this book
| Trim | Pages | Spine | Print cost | Royalty | Exp. Dist. | Inkfluence |
|---|
Pages = 6 + words / measured words per page at that trim + extra pages, rounded up to even (fixed-layout books use your page count). Print cost = KDP's fixed cost + pages x per-page cost; large trims are over 6.12 in wide or 9 in tall. Royalty = 60% of list price (50% below the marketplace threshold) minus print cost. Spine = pages x KDP's paper factor. "Est." marks trims where words per page is estimated from the text area. Expanded Distribution is the trim, ink and paper chart only; distributors also turn away some content types.
For most short and mid-length books the print cost only changes when you cross into a large trim, because KDP charges a flat price for black ink up to 110 pages. For long books, page count dominates: among the sizes that suit the book, 6 x 9 in is usually the cheapest, and only a much bigger page such as 8 x 10 in or US Letter undercuts it. The royalty calculator compares KDP with other stores and formats if you want the wider picture.
Our test: one novel at ten trims
On 13 October 2026 we took two public-domain books from Project Gutenberg, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (121,722 words in 61 chapters) and The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles (22,524 words in 17 chapters), and laid each one out as a KDP interior at all ten trims we export, through the same rendering steps as our KDP export. Each chapter starts on a new page, with a title page, copyright page and contents at the front. To isolate the effect of page size, the body type was held at the same size (about 11.8 pt) at every trim. We counted the pages of each PDF and rounded odd counts up to even, as KDP does. The full record is kept with our test notes.

Novel: Pride and Prejudice, black ink on cream. Guide: The Science of Getting Rich, black ink on white. Print cost from KDP's Amazon.com table, 13 Oct 2026. Words a page includes chapter openings and front matter.
Same 121,722-word novel, pages at each trim
Bar length is pages against the longest result (780 at 5 x 8 in). The dashed note marks KDP's 776-page cream limit.
What the test shows:
- Page count does not shrink in proportion to page area. 6 x 9 in has 46% more text area than 5 x 8 in (with our margins), but the novel lost only about 30% of its pages moving up. Dialogue, short paragraphs and chapter openings use a line or a page whatever the width, so small trims hold more than area suggests.
- A long novel can outgrow a trim. At 5 x 8 in the novel needed 780 pages, four over KDP's 776-page limit for cream paper. It would fit on white paper (828), or at 5.5 x 8.5 in.
- The cheapest trim for the novel was A4, but nobody reads a novel at A4. Among sizes readers expect for fiction, 6 x 9 in was cheapest at $7.50, and 7 x 10 in cost more ($8.00) despite 130 fewer pages, because large trims pay $0.017 a page instead of $0.012.
- The short guide landed exactly on a price step. At 6 x 9 in it came to 110 pages, the last page of KDP's flat $2.30 band for black ink. At 5 x 8 in it was 144 pages and $2.73; at any large trim, $2.84.
- The square trim is the least efficient. 8.5 x 8.5 in held fewer words a page than 7 x 10 in despite a slightly larger text area; with a short, wide text block, chapter openings and paragraph ends take a bigger share of each page.
Try your book at two trims before you decide
Write or import your manuscript, preview it at 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9 in the Export window, and export the KDP package at the one that reads best. The READ ME FIRST file lists the trim, page count and spine width for KDP's setup screens.
Import or write your bookPage limits per trim and ink
Every KDP paperback needs at least 24 pages, or 72 in standard colour. KDP counts the pages in your file and rounds an odd count up to even, because every sheet has two sides. The maximum depends on trim and paper together:
| Trims | White | Cream | Groundwood | Standard colour | Premium colour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 x 8 up to 8 x 10 (all eleven sizes), plus A5 and B5 | 828 | 776 | 812 | 600 | 828 |
| 8.25 x 6 and 8.25 x 8.25 | 800 | 750 | 784 | 600 | 800 |
| 8.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x 11 | 590 | 550 | 578 | 600 | 590 |
| A4 (8.27 x 11.69) | 780 | 730 | 764 | Not available | 590 |
When a book is over the limit, you have three fixes in order of preference: move up a trim (fewer pages), switch from cream to white paper (higher cap), or split the book into two volumes. When a book is under 24 pages, move down a trim or add content that earns its place. Do not pad with blank pages: KDP allows no more than 4 blank pages in a row at the start or in the middle of a book and 10 at the end. Inkfluence's KDP export pads a short picture book to 24 pages with blank pages and tells you how many it added, so you can add real pages instead.
Paper choice is partly reversible. KDP lets black-and-white paperbacks switch between white, cream and groundwood after publication, but ink type (black, standard colour, premium colour) is locked once a book is published, so a colour edition is a separate book.
Print cost: regular vs large trim
KDP prints each paperback on demand and takes the print cost out of your royalty. The formula is fixed cost + (page count x per-page cost), and the numbers change at the 6.12 in wide or 9 in tall line. Amazon.com prices, checked 13 October 2026:
| Ink and paper (Amazon.com) | Regular trim | Large trim |
|---|---|---|
| Black ink, white or cream, 24 to 110 pages | $2.30 flat | $2.84 flat |
| Black ink, white or cream, over 110 pages | $1.00 + $0.012 a page | $1.00 + $0.017 a page |
| Groundwood, 24 to 112 pages | $2.23 flat | $2.75 flat |
| Groundwood, 114 pages and up | $1.00 + $0.0114 a page | $1.00 + $0.0162 a page |
| Premium colour, 24 to 40 pages | $3.60 flat | $4.20 flat |
| Premium colour, 42 pages and up | $1.00 + $0.065 a page | $1.00 + $0.08 a page |
| Standard colour, 72 to 600 pages | $1.00 + $0.0255 a page | $1.00 + $0.0402 a page |
Bleed and cover finish do not change the price. In practice:
- Short black-ink books: a flat 54 cents more per copy at a large trim, whatever the page count up to 110.
- Long black-ink books: large trims cost 42% more per page, so a larger page only saves money if it cuts pages by more than that. In our novel test, 7 x 10 in cut pages by 24% against 6 x 9 in and still cost 50 cents more.
- Colour books: the gap is widest. A 100-page premium colour book costs $7.50 at 6 x 9 in and $9.00 at 8 x 10 in; in standard colour, $3.55 against $5.02.
Here is one 80,000-word novel on cream paper, estimated with the picker, priced at $14.99 on Amazon.com (60% royalty):
| Trim | Pages | Spine | Print cost | Royalty at $14.99 | Expanded Distribution (cream) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 x 8 | 514 | 1.29 in | $7.17 | $1.82 | Yes |
| 5.25 x 8 | 466 | 1.17 in | $6.59 | $2.40 | Yes |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | 420 | 1.05 in | $6.04 | $2.95 | Yes |
| A5 | 406 | 1.02 in | $5.87 | $3.12 | No |
| 6 x 9 | 358 | 0.90 in | $5.30 | $3.69 | Yes |
| 6.14 x 9.21 (large) | 348 | 0.87 in | $6.92 | $2.07 | No |
Moving from 5 x 8 in to 6 x 9 in doubles the royalty on this book, from $1.82 to $3.69 a copy. The 6.14 x 9.21 in trim gives up $1.62 a copy against 6 x 9 in for 0.14 in of extra width. If you love the feel of a 5 x 8 in novel, price for it: at 5 x 8 in this book needs a list price of about $18.10 to earn what it earns at $14.99 in 6 x 9 in. Setting the paperback price next to the ebook price is covered in how to price an ebook.
Other marketplaces use the same structure with their own rates. The large-trim penalty per page is smaller on Amazon.co.uk (GBP 0.010 regular against 0.012 large), so long books can come out cheaper at large trims there: the same 80,000-word novel costs GBP 4.43 at 6 x 9 in and GBP 4.11 at 7 x 10 in. The picker has the UK, EU, Canadian and Australian tables built in. For the royalty side, our KDP royalties guide explains the 50% and 60% bands and the Expanded Distribution rate.
How long real books are, and what that means for trim
Most trim advice assumes a 300-page novel. Most self-published books are much shorter. We took the median length of books written on Inkfluence AI by book type, recounted on 15 September 2026 (the full figures are on our AI book writing statistics page), and turned each into a page count at five common trims using the measured words per page from our test (fiction figures for novels, memoir and children's fiction; non-fiction figures for the rest), plus 6 pages of front matter.

Three things follow for trim choice:
- At the median, every book type is in KDP's flat-price band. All 60 cells are under 110 pages, so in black ink on Amazon.com each book costs $2.30 at 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 or 6 x 9 in and $2.84 at 7 x 10 or 8.5 x 11 in. For a typical first book, trim choice is worth 54 cents a copy and nothing else.
- Short books can fall under the 24-page minimum at big trims. At 8.5 x 11 in, devotionals, cookbooks and study guides come out at 20 to 22 pages, and technical guides fall short even at 6 x 9 in. Use a smaller trim, add content, or publish those as ebooks or one-off printed copies.
- The median book is too thin for spine text at any trim. KDP prints spine text only on books over 79 pages. Even the longest median type, romance, reaches only 78 pages at 5 x 8 in. Plan a plain spine, or write more chapters: each chapter on Inkfluence adds roughly 1,000 to 1,500 words.
To go the other way, from a target to a word count, this table gives the words needed for the three page counts that matter most: 24 (KDP's minimum), 80 (spine text) and 110 (the end of the flat black-ink price), with 6 pages of front matter. Word counts are the average of the fiction and non-fiction figures, rounded to the nearest 100.
| Trim | Words a page (fiction / non-fiction) | Words for 24 pages | Words for 80 pages | Words for 110 pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 x 8 | 158 / 163 | 2,900 | 11,900 | 16,700 |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | 194 / 188 | 3,400 | 14,100 | 19,900 |
| A5 | 200 / 191 | 3,500 | 14,500 | 20,300 |
| 6 x 9 | 228 / 217 | 4,000 | 16,500 | 23,100 |
| 7 x 10 | 301 / 278 | 5,200 | 21,400 | 30,100 |
| B5 | 310 / 285 | 5,400 | 22,000 | 30,900 |
| 8 x 10 | 341 / 304 | 5,800 | 23,900 | 33,500 |
| 8.5 x 8.5 | 296 / 278 | 5,200 | 21,200 | 29,800 |
| 8.5 x 11 | 397 / 363 | 6,800 | 28,100 | 39,500 |
| A4 | 409 / 363 | 6,900 | 28,600 | 40,100 |
Need more pages? Add chapters, not blank space
Ask for more chapters when you start a book, or add chapters to a finished one in the editor. Then export the KDP interior at your trim with the gutter set from the real page count.
Write your book freeWhich sizes get Expanded Distribution
Expanded Distribution offers your paperback to bookshops, libraries and online retailers through KDP's distributors in the US and the UK. It is free to enrol, pays 40% of the list price minus printing, and is only open to paperbacks (not hardcovers) that meet the distributors' rules. Trim is one of those rules, and it depends on the paper:
| Ink and paper | Eligible trims |
|---|---|
| Black on white | Every US trim except 8.25 x 6, 8.25 x 8.25, 8.5 x 8.5 and A4 |
| Black on cream or groundwood | 5 x 8, 5.25 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9 only |
| Standard colour | Every US trim except 8.25 x 6, 8.25 x 8.25 and A4 (which has no standard colour) |
| Premium colour | 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9, 6.14 x 9.21, 7 x 10, 8 x 10, 8.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x 11 |
A4, A5, B5 and custom sizes are not on the chart. Trim is only half the test. KDP's page lists content its distributors do not currently accept, including journals, notebooks, planners, calendars, coloring books, activity books, puzzle books, workbooks, cookbooks, how-to books and travel guides, along with public domain content and pages that need a high concentration of ink. A workbook at 8.5 x 11 in on white paper passes the trim test and still will not be accepted. KDP also says enrolment does not guarantee a distributor will list your book. The royalty is thin as well: a 200-page 6 x 9 in book at $14.99 earns $5.59 on Amazon.com and $2.60 through Expanded Distribution.
If bookshops matter to you, the safe choices are a novel at 5 x 8 to 6 x 9 in on cream, or non-fiction at 5.5 x 8.5 or 6 x 9 in on any paper. For a fuller look at selling beyond Amazon, see the self-publishing guide; to reach bookshops through IngramSpark instead, IngramSpark vs KDP compares fees, print cost per copy and distribution. On IngramSpark's 2026 rate card only the width changes the print rate (under 6.15 in is the cheaper small rate), and the IngramSpark cost calculator prices a paperback at each trim.
How trim changes the spine and the cover
Trim does not appear in KDP's spine formula, but it drives it. Spine width is page count times the paper factor: 0.002252 in a page for white paper and standard colour, 0.0025 in for cream, 0.00235 in for groundwood and 0.002347 in for premium colour. Change the trim and the page count moves, so the spine moves with it. In our test the novel's spine on cream went from 1.95 in at 5 x 8 in to 0.79 in at 8.5 x 11 in.
The cover changes in two ways at once: the front and back panels follow the new trim, and the spine between them follows the new page count. That is why the cover must be built after the trim and the interior are final. Our KDP cover size and spine width calculator gives the full-wrap size for any trim and page count, and the margins that change with page count are covered in the formatting guide.
A5, B5, A4 and custom sizes
How ISO and custom sizes work on KDP:
- A4 (8.27 x 11.69 in) is on KDP's US list, as a large trim. It caps premium colour at 590 pages and has no standard colour option. It suits workbooks for readers who print on A4 at home.
- A5 (5.83 x 8.27 in) is on KDP's Japan list. On kdp.amazon.com you enter it as a custom size; it is a regular trim for print cost because it is under 6.12 in wide and 9 in tall. A good novel and guide size for UK and European readers, close to 5.5 x 8.5 in.
- B5 (7.17 x 10.12 in, the Japanese B5) is also on the Japan list and is a large trim. It sits close to 7 x 10 in and suits workbooks and manuals.
- Custom trims on kdp.amazon.com can be anything from 4 to 8.5 in wide and 6 to 11.69 in tall. None of these is on KDP's Expanded Distribution chart.
Hardcover trim sizes
KDP's hardcovers (case laminate) come in five sizes: 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9, 6.14 x 9.21, 7 x 10 and 8.25 x 11 in, each with 75 to 550 pages. Ink and paper are black on white or cream, or premium colour; there is no groundwood or standard colour. Hardcovers cannot join Expanded Distribution. Inkfluence AI makes paperback cover wraps, not hardcover covers; if you want a hardcover edition, KDP's Cover Creator or its hardcover template can reuse your front cover art.
Choosing a trim in Inkfluence AI
We recommend Inkfluence AI first for authors who want the trim, interior and cover to come from one place, because the KDP export works out the parts people get wrong by hand: the inside margin from the real page count, and a cover wrap sized to the same page count and paper. In the Export window, open the KDP tab and choose from the Page size buttons: Trade (6 x 9 in, marked KDP), Pocket (5 x 8), Digest (5.5 x 8.5), Workbook (7 x 10), Large (8 x 10), US Letter (8.5 x 11), A5, B5 and A4. Picture books export at 8.5 x 8.5 in, and coloring books can also use US Letter.
What happens after you choose:
- The interior is laid out at exactly the trim size, with no bleed, unless the book has full-page photos, in which case it exports as a bleed file and the READ ME tells you to choose Bleed in KDP. Text sits 0.5 in from the outside edge and 0.75 in from the top and bottom.
- The inside margin comes from the real page count. The export renders the book, counts the pages and uses KDP's gutter band for that count with extra room, and renders again if the count moves the book into a different band.
- The cover wrap matches. The full-wrap PDF uses the trim, the real page count and the paper you chose in the cover designer's Print tab.
- The READ ME FIRST file lists the trim, page count, spine width, paper and the bleed answer to enter in KDP.
- Novels get the trade size by default. The app's default page size is US Letter; if a novel is left on it, the KDP export uses 6 x 9 in. Other books keep the size you see, so pick 6 x 9 in for a typical non-fiction paperback.
The limits, stated plainly: Inkfluence exports ten trims, not all of KDP's. It does not offer 5.06 x 7.81, 5.25 x 8, 6.14 x 9.21, 6.69 x 9.61, 7.44 x 9.69, 7.5 x 9.25, 8.25 x 6 or 8.25 x 8.25 in, or custom sizes, and you cannot type in your own margins. It makes paperback wraps only, not hardcover. The KDP package needs a paid plan or a credit pack (Creator is $9.99 a month; 15 credits are $9.99); the free plan exports a PDF with a footer credit. AI cover art is not on the free plan, and picture books are a paid feature. Our formatting software comparison covers tools with custom trims if you need one, and Atticus vs Vellum compares the two desktop formatters on price, platform and print output.

Step by step: pick a trim and set it in KDP
- Decide where the book will sell. If bookshops and libraries matter, keep to the Expanded Distribution chart and check the content list first.
- Pick the trim from the book's type using the table above or the picker, then check the estimated page count against the minimum and maximum for your paper.
- Choose ink and paper. Cream for most fiction, white for non-fiction and anything with diagrams, premium colour for photos and picture books. Ink cannot be changed after publication.
- Check the cost and the price. Run the picker at two or three trims. If a larger regular trim saves a dollar a copy, that is a dollar of royalty on every sale.
- Lay out the interior at that trim and read the real page count from the PDF. In Inkfluence, Export, then KDP, then the Page size you chose.
- Build the cover last, from the final page count and the same paper.
- Enter the trim in KDP. In the paperback's Print Options, 6 x 9 in is the default; click Select a different size for anything else, and use the custom option for A5 or B5. Choose the same ink, paper and bleed setting as your file, then upload and check the previewer.

Eight trim size mistakes
- Choosing 6.14 x 9.21 in by accident. It looks like 6 x 9 in but it is a large trim, and on a long book it costs well over a dollar more per copy.
- Printing a novel at US Letter. It is the cheapest per copy for long text and the wrong shape for a reader. Novels belong between 5 x 8 and 6 x 9 in.
- Assuming a cream novel at 7 x 10 in can go to bookshops. Cream only qualifies for Expanded Distribution at the four smallest regular trims.
- Picking a square trim other than 8.5 x 8.5 in. 8.25 x 8.25 in cannot join Expanded Distribution with any ink.
- Forgetting the page cap. A long book at 5 x 8 in on cream can pass 776 pages; big trims stop at 590 or 550.
- Making the cover before the interior is final. A trim change moves the spine as well as the panels.
- Uploading a file that does not match the trim you select. KDP checks the page size against your choice and rejects a mismatch; our KDP rejection guide has the fix if it happens.
- Padding a short book with blank pages to reach 24. KDP limits blank runs; choose a smaller trim or add real content.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common KDP trim size?
6 x 9 in (15.24 x 22.86 cm). KDP calls it the most common trim size for paperbacks in the US and makes it the default in Print Options. It is a regular trim, so it gets the lower print cost, and it can join Expanded Distribution with every ink and paper.
What trim size should I use for a novel on KDP?
5 x 8 in, 5.25 x 8 in, 5.5 x 8.5 in or 6 x 9 in. Shorter novels look more substantial at 5 x 8 in; most novels sit well at 5.5 x 8.5 in; very long novels stay cheaper and under the page limit at 6 x 9 in. All four are regular trims and all four can join Expanded Distribution on cream paper.
What is the best KDP trim size for a workbook or journal?
8.5 x 11 in is the standard for workbooks, journals, planners and coloring books, with 7 x 10 in and 8 x 10 in as lighter options. Note that KDP's distributors do not currently accept journals, planners, notebooks, workbooks, coloring or activity books for Expanded Distribution, so these sell on Amazon only whatever the trim.
What is a large trim size on KDP?
Any book more than 6.12 in (155.5 mm) wide or more than 9 in (228.6 mm) tall. Large trims cost more to print. On Amazon.com a black ink book of 24 to 110 pages costs $2.30 at a regular trim and $2.84 at a large trim; above 110 pages it is $1.00 plus $0.012 a page regular or $0.017 a page large.
What are the minimum and maximum page counts for KDP paperbacks?
The minimum is 24 pages, or 72 for standard colour. The maximum is 828 pages on white paper or premium colour at most trims, 776 on cream, 812 on groundwood and 600 in standard colour. 8.25 in wide trims stop at 800 on white, and 8.5 x 8.5 in and 8.5 x 11 in stop at 590 on white and 550 on cream.
Which KDP trim sizes are eligible for Expanded Distribution?
5.5 x 8.5 in and 6 x 9 in qualify with every ink and paper. 5 x 8 in and 5.25 x 8 in qualify with everything except premium colour. Cream and groundwood paper only qualify at those four trims. 8.5 x 8.5 in qualifies only in colour, and 8.25 x 6 in and 8.25 x 8.25 in never qualify. A4, A5 and B5 are not on KDP's eligibility chart.
Does KDP allow custom trim sizes?
Yes, for paperbacks. KDP accepts a custom trim from 4 to 8.5 in wide and 6 to 11.69 in tall. Custom sizes are not on KDP's Expanded Distribution chart, so plan on Amazon sales only. Hardcovers only come in five fixed sizes.
Can I publish an A5 book on Amazon KDP?
Yes. A5 (5.83 x 8.27 in) is on KDP's Japan trim list, and on kdp.amazon.com you can enter it as a custom size because it falls inside the custom range. It is a regular trim for print cost. It is not on the Expanded Distribution chart. Inkfluence AI exports KDP interiors at A5.
Does trim size change the spine width?
Indirectly. The spine is page count times KDP's paper factor (0.002252 in per page on white paper, 0.0025 in on cream). A smaller trim holds fewer words a page, so the same book has more pages and a wider spine. In our test, a 121,722-word novel needed 780 pages at 5 x 8 in and 542 pages at 6 x 9 in.
What trim sizes does KDP offer for hardcover?
Five: 5.5 x 8.5 in, 6 x 9 in, 6.14 x 9.21 in, 7 x 10 in and 8.25 x 11 in, each with 75 to 550 pages, in black ink on white or cream paper or premium colour. Hardcovers cannot join Expanded Distribution.
