How many books have been written with AI?

102,854 books had been created on Inkfluence AI as of 15 September 2026, counted across the full platform with no sampling. Monthly creation grew from 219 books in December 2025 to 22,669 in July 2026.

Nobody can credibly count every AI-written book in the world. Most platforms publish nothing, and AI detection run on finished text is unreliable enough that the major studies hedge it. What can be counted honestly is one platform in full, which is what this page does. For the wider market, the most-cited estimate is from the National Bureau of Economic Research, which put the share of books published in 2025 and sold on Amazon that contain AI-generated text at roughly half, up from 23% in 2023.

What kind of books do people write with AI?

Non-fiction is 63.7% of what people write with AI and fiction is 36.3%, across 93,511 classified books on Inkfluence AI as of 15 September 2026. The two largest single categories are almost exactly the same size: general fiction at 17.8% and practical how-to guides at 17.6%.

The interesting part is not the split, it is what appears in the non-fiction half. Workbooks, study guides, course companions, devotionals and 30-day challenges together outnumber romance. None of those formats has a category in Bowker's industry taxonomy, which is why they are invisible in every other publishing statistic you will read. They are the shape of a working document rather than a book you buy in a shop.

How long is the average AI-written book?

The median AI-written book is 5 chapters and 9,337 words. Chapter counts come from 81,671 books and word counts from the 12,647 books carrying a stored word count, all measured on 15 September 2026. The mean chapter count is 7.5, pulled up by a long tail: 3.4% of books run past 30 chapters.

This is the number most likely to surprise anyone who has read a writing-advice page. The standard advice figure for a novel is around 90,000 words. Measured against a real corpus, 76.1% of AI-written books have five chapters or fewer and only 6.9% pass 70,000 words. Most people using AI are not writing novels. They are writing short, purposeful non-fiction.

Fiction runs longer than non-fiction, but not by as much as you would think. Median fiction length is 10,469 words across 5,422 books with a stored count; median non-fiction is 8,498 across 7,228. The gap is about two thousand words, not the tenfold difference the novel-versus-guide framing implies.

How long is a book in each genre?

Romance produces the longest AI-written books at a median 11,281 words, followed by biography and memoir at 10,487 and general fiction at 10,426. The shortest are technical guides at 2,655 words and study guides at 4,422. Measured on 15 September 2026.

Words per chapter is the more useful number if you are planning a book, because chapter count is the lever most tools actually give you. It ranges from 2,256 in romance down to 531 in technical guides, a fourfold spread. A ten-chapter romance and a ten-chapter technical guide are not the same size of undertaking.

Do people finish the books they start with AI?

40.8% of the 102,854 books have been exported at least once, which is the clearest available proxy for a manuscript someone considered finished. Counted 15 September 2026.

The average hides the finding that matters. Non-fiction gets finished and fiction does not. Playbooks export at 62.0%, social strategy guides at 62.6%, 30-day challenges at 60.6% and health guides at 57.6%. General fiction manages 28.6% and romance 30.1%. A practical guide has a job to do and a deadline attached to it; a novel has neither, and the same pattern shows up in every writing community that has ever counted finished manuscripts.

PDF dominates because most of these books are not products for a store. They are lead magnets, client deliverables and course companions. Of the books that do go to a storefront, 2,085 were published to Gumroad and 413 listed on Etsy directly from the platform, and 937 books have an audiobook recorded.

What languages are AI books written in?

15.7% of AI-written books are not in English, spread across more than 30 languages. English accounts for 86,700 of the 102,854 books counted on 15 September 2026.

The order of the non-English languages is worth noting because it does not match the publishing industry's. Indonesian sits level with German, and Bengali and Hindi both appear ahead of languages with far larger traditional publishing markets. AI writing tools reach places the publishing industry measures poorly.

Books can also be translated after they are written, into 59 languages.

How much do people write in the prompt?

76.9% of books begin from a written prompt, and the median prompt is 352 characters, roughly three sentences. Measured across 79,135 books carrying a prompt on 15 September 2026.

Three sentences is the entire brief for most AI-written books. That single number explains a great deal of the complaint that AI drafts read generically: a model given a topic and no specifics will fill the gaps with plausible generalities, because generalities are all it was given. The books that need the least editing are the ones whose prompt carried real examples, a named audience and a point of view. If you want a practical version of that, the outline generator is a free way to see what a fuller brief produces.

Methodology

What was counted. Every book project created on Inkfluence AI, from the first in November 2025 to the count taken on 15 September 2026. This is a full population count, not a sample and not a survey. A script reads the production book records directly and aggregates them; no individual book, title or account is identified anywhere in the output.

What counts as a book. A project created by a user with a book type assigned. Projects are counted whether or not they were finished, which is deliberate, because the completion rate is one of the things being measured.

Chapter counts come from the stored chapter count, or the planned chapter count where a book has not finished generating. 81,671 of the 102,854 books carry one.

Word counts are the weakest figure on this page and we would rather say so. A stored word count exists on 12,647 books, because the field is written when a book is saved in the newer storage format. Word-count medians are therefore drawn from that subset rather than the full corpus, and the subset skews toward more recently edited books. Chapter counts, export rates, language and genre figures use the full population.

Export rate counts books exported at least once in any format. It is a proxy for completion, not a measure of publication. Someone who exports a draft to read it on a tablet counts; someone who finishes a book and never exports it does not.

Genre figures use the book-type blueprint selected or classified at generation. Genres with fewer than 500 books or fewer than 30 stored word counts are excluded from the per-genre table to avoid quoting a median off a handful of books.

Deliberately not published: time from creation to export. The stored timestamps produce a median of about a minute, which is not a credible measure of writing a book, so the field is being treated as unreliable rather than published with a caveat.

Limitations

  • This is one platform, not the market. These are statistics about books written on Inkfluence AI. They are not a sample of AI-written books generally, and they are certainly not a sample of publishing.
  • The population is self-selected. Everyone counted here chose to use an AI book tool. That selects for people writing short practical non-fiction and against, for example, literary novelists.
  • It skews English and skews Western. 84.3% of books are in English, so the language breakdown describes this platform's reach, not global demand.
  • Export is a proxy, not a fact. It is the best completion signal available and it is still a proxy.
  • The corpus is young and growing fast. More than half of these books were created in the last five months, so any figure here is weighted toward recent behaviour rather than a stable long-run average.

Changelog

  • 15 September 2026. First publication. 102,854 books counted. Adds per-genre length and completion, which had not been published before.

Next scheduled recount: December 2026. The page date changes only when the numbers are actually recounted.

Frequently asked questions

How many books have been written with AI? +
No one can count every AI-written book, because most platforms publish nothing and AI detection on finished text is unreliable. What can be counted is a single platform. Across Inkfluence AI, 102,854 books had been created as of 15 September 2026. For the wider market, the National Bureau of Economic Research estimated that about half of the books published in 2025 and sold on Amazon contained AI-generated text, up from 23% in 2023.
What kind of books do people write with AI? +
Mostly non-fiction. Across 93,511 classified books on Inkfluence AI, 63.7% use a non-fiction blueprint and 36.3% fiction. The two largest single categories are almost the same size: general fiction at 17.8% and practical how-to guides at 17.6%. Romance follows at 7.4% and personal development at 7.2%.
How long is the average AI-written book? +
The median is 5 chapters and 9,337 words, measured across 12,647 books with a stored word count. That is a short non-fiction book or a novella, not a full-length novel. Only 6.9% run past 70,000 words, and 76.1% of all books have five chapters or fewer.
Which genre produces the longest AI-written books? +
Romance, at a median 11,281 words across 1,446 books with a stored count, and 2,256 words per chapter. Biography and memoir is next at 10,487, then general fiction at 10,426. The shortest are technical guides at 2,655 words and study guides at 4,422.
Do people finish the books they start with AI? +
Four in ten do. 40.8% of the 102,854 books have been exported at least once, which is the clearest available proxy for a finished manuscript. The split by genre is sharper than the average suggests: playbooks export at 62.0% and 30-day challenges at 60.6%, while general fiction manages 28.6% and romance 30.1%.
What file format do AI authors export? +
PDF, overwhelmingly. Of books exported at least once, 35,580 last exported as PDF, 3,995 as DOCX and 2,363 as EPUB. PDF accounts for roughly 85% of last-used export formats, which reflects how many of these books are client deliverables, lead magnets and course companions rather than ebooks for a store.
Are AI books only written in English? +
No. 15.7% of books on Inkfluence AI are in a language other than English, spread across more than 30 languages. After English, the largest are Spanish (2,352 books), French (2,131), Portuguese (1,968), German (1,499), Indonesian (1,496) and Arabic (1,408).
How much do people write in the prompt? +
Not much. 76.9% of books begin from a written prompt, and the median prompt is 352 characters, roughly three sentences. That is the whole brief for a book in most cases, which is worth knowing if you are wondering why generic AI drafts read generically.
Can I use these statistics? +
Yes. Cite them with a link to this page and the date they were counted. The full dataset is downloadable as CSV from this page with no email required, and the methodology, sample definitions and limitations are stated in full below.
How often is this updated? +
Quarterly, with a genuine recount rather than a date change, and a changelog at the foot of the page recording what moved. The numbers here were counted on 15 September 2026 by a script that reads the production book records directly.
