How long is an audiobook, really?

The usual answer given to authors is 9,300 words per finished hour, or about 155 words a minute. That number comes from the human audiobook industry, where it is used to estimate studio time and narrator fees. It is a reasonable figure for a person reading into a microphone. It is not the right figure for a synthetic narrator, and using it will give you the wrong runtime. So we measured our own. Every audiobook chapter produced on Inkfluence AI stores both the finished audio and the text it came from, which means the real narration speed is recoverable rather than guessed. The result across the whole corpus is 164.4 words a minute, close to the median of 163.7, with the middle 80% of chapters falling between 137.8 and 192.

Narration speed by voice

A single average hides the thing that matters most. Narration pace varies enormously between voices, so the same manuscript produces very different audiobooks depending on who reads it. Among English narrators alone the range runs from 142 to 185 words a minute. On an 80,000 word book that is a difference of more than two hours of finished audio.

How we measured it

Each finished chapter is stored as a constant bitrate MP3, so the file's byte length converts directly to duration. Pairing that duration with the word count of the chapter text that produced it gives the real narration speed for that recording. Repeating it across the corpus gives the distribution above.

We excluded chapters shorter than 150 words or 30 seconds, where a small timing difference distorts the rate, and any recording whose implied speed fell outside 60 to 400 words a minute, which indicates the text was edited after recording rather than a genuine narration pace. The remaining 8,015 chapters are the sample. No sampling or weighting was applied beyond that.

This is our own production data rather than a survey, which is its strength and its limit. It describes synthetic narration as it is actually produced, at the settings our authors use. It does not describe human narration, and it does not describe other tools. We publish first-party figures the same way in our AI book writing statistics and self-publishing statistics.

Why runtime is worth knowing before you record

Runtime is how listeners judge an audiobook. It appears on every store listing, it shapes what people expect to pay, and several distributors use finished hours rather than word count when setting royalty bands or price tiers. A book that runs 2 hours 40 minutes sits in a different part of the market from one that runs 9 hours, even if both are good.

Knowing the number in advance gives you choices you lose once the audio exists. You can add material to clear a threshold, split a long manuscript into two volumes, or pick a narrator whose pace suits the material. A brisk voice suits a practical guide people listen to while doing something else, the kind of thing the AI business book writer produces. A slower one suits fiction, memoir and anything with weight to it, which is where the fiction authors path leads.

Human narration speed is the wrong benchmark

The audiobook industry runs on the finished hour. Narrators are booked and paid per finished hour, and production schedules are built from it, which is why narrator rate guides quote fees in those terms. The rule of thumb that grew up around it, roughly 9,300 words to a finished hour, is really a scheduling figure for a person in a booth, and it carries the pauses, breaths and performance choices a human brings.

Synthetic narration does not behave that way. It does not slow for emphasis in the same places, it does not vary across a long session, and its pace is a property of the voice rather than of the day. Applying the human figure to it produces an answer that is confidently wrong. Our measured average of 164.4 words a minute is about 6% faster than the 155 the human rule of thumb implies, and on any individual voice the gap is far wider in both directions.

Language shifts the pace, but the voice decides it

It is tempting to assume a language has a speed. Our data says otherwise. The three German narrators we measured run at 141, 156 and 220 words a minute, a spread wider than the entire English range. Spanish narrators sit between 163 and 187. The slowest voice in the whole catalogue is Russian at 123, and the fastest is German at 220.

Two things follow from that. If you are translating a book, do not assume the audio will run to the same length, because word counts change between languages and so does the narrator you pick. And if you are choosing a voice in any language, the individual voice matters far more than the language it speaks. Picking on accent alone tells you almost nothing about how long your audiobook will be.

If the book is not written yet

Runtime is downstream of length, and length is downstream of structure. If you are still planning the book, the number of chapters is the lever that moves the finished audio most, because chapters land in a fairly predictable range of length. Ten chapters of ordinary length produces a very different audiobook from twenty-five.

Sketching the structure first lets you aim at a runtime rather than discover it. Runtime, files and what stores expect

Most audiobook stores want one file per chapter rather than a single long recording, and they apply audio requirements to each file. The published submission requirements used across much of the industry ask for 44.1 kHz MP3 at 192 kbps constant bitrate or higher, RMS level between -23 dB and -18 dB, peaks below -3 dB, and a noise floor under -60 dB RMS. Eligibility is a separate question from format, and it is the one that catches authors out. Some platforms do not accept AI narration at all, whatever the file looks like. Others do. Requirements differ between stores and they change, so confirm your distributor's current position before you spend anything on production. What makes a real recording differ from the estimate

The calculator treats your book as a bag of words, and a narrator does not. Four things move the real number, and they are worth knowing because they are the reason we show a range rather than a single confident figure.

  • Punctuation. Full stops, paragraph breaks and dialogue all invite pauses. Text with short sentences runs longer per word than text with long flowing ones.
  • Numbers and abbreviations. "1994" is one word on the page and four syllables aloud. Technical writing, recipes and anything with measurements consistently runs long.
  • Lists and headings. Structured non-fiction has more line breaks per word than prose, and each one adds a beat. A workbook narrates more slowly than a novel of the same length.
  • Word length. Words per minute is a proxy for syllables per minute. A book of long words runs longer than its word count suggests, which is part of why the middle 80% of our chapters spans 137.8 to 192 rather than clustering tightly.

Between about 4 hours 20 minutes and 6 hours, depending on who narrates it. At our measured median of 164 words a minute a 50,000 word book runs about 5 hours 5 minutes. The same manuscript read by our slowest voice runs closer to 6 hours 45 minutes, and by our fastest closer to 3 hours 47 minutes. Word count alone cannot give you a single answer, which is why the calculator above asks which narrator you are using.

How many words per minute is an audiobook?

Across 8,015 finished chapters and 1,552 hours of audio we measured an average of 164 words a minute, with a median of 164 and the middle 80% of chapters falling between 138 and 192. Published guidance for human narration usually quotes 155 words a minute, or roughly 9,300 words per finished hour. That figure comes from human studio recording and is not the right number for synthetic narration.

Why does the narrator change the length?

Every voice has its own natural pace, and the spread is much wider than most people expect. In our corpus the slowest voice reads at 123 words a minute and the fastest at 220. Even among common English narrators the gap is large: Brian reads at 142 words a minute and Matthew at 185, a difference of about 30%. On a full length book that is well over an hour of finished audio.

How many finished hours will my book produce?

Divide your word count by your narrator’s words per minute, then divide by 60. A 60,000 word book at 164 words a minute is 366 minutes, or 6 hours 6 minutes. Does audiobook length affect what I earn?

It can. Some distributors set royalties or retail price bands partly by finished runtime rather than by word count, and listeners often judge value by hours. Knowing the runtime before you record lets you decide whether to add material, split a long book into volumes, or choose a different narrator. Requirements differ between stores and change over time, so check your distributor’s current terms.
