It was not the kind of forgetting where you leave your keys on the table. It was the deep kind, the kind that sits in your chest like a hollow drum. The cloud knew something was missing but could not remember what.

"Excuse me," the cloud said to a passing flock of starlings. "Do any of you know my name?"

The starlings tilted their heads. "You are the cloud above the meadow," said the smallest one. "That is all we know."

But that was not a name. That was just a description. The cloud drifted eastward, feeling the wind tug at its edges, and decided to ask someone who had been around longer. Someone who never moved.

The mountain was enormous and very old. Snow sat on its peak like a white hat it never took off. When the cloud floated up to ask its question, the mountain took a long time to respond.

"A name," the mountain rumbled, "is not something you find. It is something that finds you. I have had seven names in seven thousand years. The deer call me Shelter. The river calls me Source. The eagles call me Home."

"But what do you call yourself?" the cloud asked.

The mountain was quiet for so long the cloud thought it had fallen asleep. Then: "I call myself Here. Because that is where I always am."

The cloud considered this. It could not call itself Here because it was never in the same place twice. It thanked the mountain and continued drifting, this time toward the sound of water.
