I found the first letter in a bookshop on the Left Bank. It was tucked inside a water-stained copy of Madame Bovary, folded into thirds, the ink faded to the colour of weak tea. The handwriting was careful and slanted and unmistakably his.

I did not mean to read it. But the opening line caught me: Darling, I have walked the length of the Seine today, looking for the words to explain. There was no signature, no date. Just five paragraphs of someone trying to say what could not be said in person.

That evening, I sat in my rented apartment overlooking Rue Mouffetard and read it again. Then I went back to the bookshop and bought every book on the shelf where I had found it. Three more letters fell out.

The house had not changed. That was the first lie Eleanor told herself as she turned off the main road and onto the gravel drive. Of course it had changed. Twenty years of rain and wind and neglect had softened its edges: the white paint was now the colour of old bone, the porch railing dipped in the middle like a tired smile.

But the lake behind it was exactly as she remembered. Still as held breath. The willows at its edge dipping their fingers into the water the way they always had.

She sat in the car for a long time before going inside.

The kitchen smelled of woodsmoke and damp, ghosts of a thousand breakfasts her grandmother had cooked on the cast-iron stove. Eleanor set down her bag and opened the window above the sink. Lake air poured in. Cold. Clean. It tasted like every July she had ever tried to forget.

The garden had gone wild. Foxgloves as tall as a child grew where the vegetable beds had been. The rose arch had collapsed under the weight of climbing jasmine.
