Novella vs Novel: The Word Count Line, and What It Means for Price and Print
The difference starts as a number: 40,000 words. Below it, down to 17,500, a story is a novella; above it, a novel. The number matters more than it looks if you publish yourself, because a novella sits right where Amazon's royalty bands, page minimums and spine rules change. Below are the definitions with their sources, eight classic novellas we counted and typeset, and a calculator that shows what a novella earns as a paperback and an ebook.
What is the difference between a novella and a novel?
A novella is a work of fiction of 17,500 to 39,999 words; a novel is 40,000 words or more. Those are the lines the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association uses for the Nebula Awards, and the Hugo Awards draw the same ones. Beyond length, a novella usually has one main plot, a small cast and a short span of time. In print, the 8 classic novellas we typeset all came to 110 pages or fewer at 6 x 9 inches, where KDP charges a flat print cost and, for most of them, cannot print text on the spine.

Book length calculatorNovella, novelette, short story, novel: the definitions
Publishers rarely publish their own length definitions, so the lines most writers use come from two awards that have to sort stories into categories. Both draw them in the same places:
| Category | SFWA (Nebula Awards) | Hugo Awards |
|---|---|---|
| Short story | fewer than 7,500 words | less than 7,500 words |
| Novelette | 7,500 to 17,499 | between 7,500 and 17,500 |
| Novella | 17,500 to 39,999 | between 17,500 and 40,000 |
| Novel | 40,000 or more | 40,000 or more |
Sources: SFWA Nebula Rules and Hugo Award categories, read 20 October 2026.
Both awards are for science fiction and fantasy, but their lines have become the general reference because nobody else publishes clearer ones. Outside the awards the edges are looser, and if you are submitting to a magazine, contest or publisher, their own guidelines win.

Famous novellas, counted and typeset
Lists of famous novellas usually give no word counts, or copied ones. We counted these from the public-domain texts on Project Gutenberg and typeset each one through our KDP export at two page sizes:
| Novella | Words | Chapters | Pages 6 x 9 | Pages 5.5 x 8.5 | Reading time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metamorphosis (Franz Kafka, 1915) | 21,935 | 3 | 43 | 50 | 1 hr 24 min |
| The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson, 1886) | 25,574 | 10 | 60 | 69 | 1 hr 38 min |
| Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll, 1865) | 26,441 | 12 | 75 | 84 | 1 hr 42 min |
| A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens, 1843) | 28,435 | 5 | 72 | 83 | 1 hr 49 min |
| The Time Machine (H. G. Wells, 1895) | 32,377 | 16 | 76 | 87 | 2 hr 5 min |
| Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad, 1899) | 37,907 | 3 | 72 | 85 | 2 hr 26 min |
| The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1900) | 39,272 | 24 | 110 | 125 | 2 hr 31 min |
| The Turn of the Screw (Henry James, 1898) | 39,466 | 24 | 101 | 116 | 2 hr 32 min |
Counted and typeset 20 October 2026; pages include the title, copyright and contents pages. Reading time at 260 words a minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Method: book length calculator.
Three things stand out. First, two of the best-known "short novels" are not novels by the line: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The Turn of the Screw both fall just under 40,000 words. Second, every one of these books takes under three hours to read, which is the practical promise of a novella: one evening, or a couple of commutes. Third, the page counts are low enough that the printing rules for short books apply to all of them, which is the subject of the next section.
On the other side of the line, The Great Gatsby is a novel at 48,152 words but prints to only 131 pages at 6 x 9 in our export, which shows how close a short novel and a long novella can be in the hand.
A novella in print: three KDP lines it sits on
KDP's rules for paperbacks and hardcovers (page count and trim help) change at three page counts that novellas land around:
- 110 pages: flat print cost. A black-ink paperback at a regular trim costs a flat $2.30 to print on Amazon.com up to 110 pages, then $1.00 plus $0.012 a page. All 8 of the classic novellas we typeset came in at 110 pages or fewer at 6 x 9, so each costs exactly the same to print. A modern novella with more dialogue runs longer: 30,000 words is about 124 pages and $2.49.
- 79 pages: spine text. KDP prints a title on the spine only from 79 pages. 6 of the 8 classic novellas were under that at 6 x 9 and would have a blank spine. At 5.5 x 8.5, where the same book takes more pages, 4 of those 6 clear 79, so a smaller trim is a simple way to get a title on the spine of a short book.
- 75 pages: hardcover minimum. KDP hardcovers need 75 to 550 pages. Metamorphosis, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, A Christmas Carol and Heart of Darkness fell below 75 at 6 x 9, so at that size they could only be paperbacks.
The paperback royalty has its own line, at the list price rather than the page count. On Amazon.com KDP pays 60% of the list price, less printing, from $9.99, and 50% below it. For a 30,000-word novella at 6 x 9 that costs $2.49 to print:
| List price | Royalty rate | You keep a copy |
|---|---|---|
| $7.99 | 50% | $1.51 |
| $8.99 | 50% | $2.01 |
| $9.99 | 60% | $3.50 |
| $11.99 | 60% | $4.70 |
Going from $7.99 to $9.99 more than doubles what you keep, because the higher rate starts exactly there. Whether readers pay $9.99 for a novella in your genre is a separate question; the point is that $8.99 adds a dollar to the reader's price but only about $0.50 to yours, while $9.99 adds $1.99. Our guide to KDP paperbacks covers the rest of the print settings, and the royalty calculator compares stores.
A novella as an ebook
Ebooks have no print cost, so length matters less for royalty and more for what readers expect to pay. KDP's royalty depends on the list price: on Amazon.com the 70% option needs a price between $2.99 and $12.99 (the top of the band moved up from $9.99 on 7 July 2026), and outside that band KDP pays 35% (KDP list price requirements). The 70% option also deducts a delivery cost of $0.15 for each megabyte of the file (KDP delivery costs). For a 1 MB file:
| List price | Royalty rate | You keep a copy |
|---|---|---|
| $0.99 | 35% | $0.35 |
| $1.99 | 35% | $0.70 |
| $2.99 | 70% | $1.99 |
| $3.99 | 70% | $2.69 |
| $4.99 | 70% | $3.39 |
The jump at $2.99 is the ebook version of the paperback's $9.99 line: a novella at $2.99 earns nearly three times what it earns at $1.99. A novella's text file is small, so the delivery cost is often only a few cents; images, including a large cover inside the file, are what make files heavy. KDP also sets a minimum price for the 35% option by file size: $0.99 under 3 MB, $1.99 from 3 to 10 MB and $2.99 at 10 MB or more.
If you enrol in Kindle Unlimited, KDP pays by pages read rather than by sale, so a shorter book earns less per borrow than a longer one read to the end. The ebook income calculator estimates sales and page-read income together, and our guide to pricing an ebook covers the rest.
Write the novella, then publish it. Inkfluence AI writes a novella chapter by chapter from your idea, designs the cover, and exports the Kindle file and the print-ready paperback PDF.
Start your novella freeNovelettes and short stories: the lengths below a novella
Below 17,500 words a story is a novelette, and below 7,500 a short story. Both are traditionally published in magazines and collections rather than on their own, and print explains why: a standalone short book gets very thin very quickly. In our page model, with plenty of dialogue:
| Words | Counts as | Pages at 6 x 9 | Pages at 5 x 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | Short story | 26 | 32 |
| 7,500 | Novelette | 36 | 44 |
| 12,000 | Novelette | 54 | 66 |
| 17,500 | Novella | 76 | 94 |
KDP will not print a paperback under 24 pages, which a story reaches at roughly 4,500 words at 6 x 9 or 3,500 at 5 x 8. A single short story can still be an ebook, and several can make a collection that clears the paperback minimum and the 79-page line for spine text. A novelette sits in between: long enough for a slim paperback at the smaller trims, short enough to read in well under an hour.
If you write short fiction, the free writing prompt generator is a quick way to start a story, and the AI fanfiction writer works at short lengths too.
How a novella differs from a novel on the page
Length is the definition, but it shapes everything else. A novel has room for subplots, several points of view and months or years of story. A novella usually does not, and the good ones turn that into a strength:
- One main line of action. A Christmas Carol follows one man through one night. The Time Machine follows one journey. There is a single question and the book answers it.
- A small cast. Three or four characters who matter, and everyone else in support. Each new important character costs words a novella does not have.
- A short span of time. Many novellas cover days or weeks. Long time jumps are possible, but each needs a scene to carry it.
- Fewer, fuller chapters, or many short ones. A Christmas Carol uses five staves; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz uses 24 chapters. Both work. Our page on chapters in a novella has the counts.
- An ending that lands quickly. A novella builds less, so it can afford less wind-down. A reader who started it this evening should finish it with the feeling they read something whole.
Genres that suit the form include horror, where a single sustained dread need not stretch; romance, especially shorter books in a series; and science fiction built around one idea. Our AI horror story generator, AI romance novel writer and sci-fi story generator all work at novella length.
Turning a novella into a novel, or a novel into a novella
Growing a novella
If your story wants to be a novel, or you need it to clear 40,000 words for a contest or a publisher, add story rather than description. The most reliable sources of real length are a subplot that puts pressure on the main one, a second point of view that sees the events differently, and a setback before the climax that the first draft skipped. Padding scenes with description makes a novella longer and worse; adding a line of action makes it a novel.
Cutting a novel down
Going the other way means choosing the story's single strongest line and letting go of the rest. Subplots go first, then secondary points of view, then any time span the main line does not need. What remains should still be a whole story, not a novel with pieces missing.
Either way, list the chapters before you start, with a word count for each, and the change becomes a plan instead of a rewrite. The AI developmental editor looks at structure across a whole draft, and the book outline generator lays out a fresh chapter plan at the new length.
A chapter plan for a 30,000-word novella
A novella has room for one strong line of action and very little else, so it helps to know where each part of the story falls before you write. Here is a simple 12-chapter plan at about 2,500 words a chapter, using the common split of a quarter for the set-up, half for the middle and a quarter for the end:
| Chapters | Words | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | about 7,500 | The character, the world and the problem. By the end of chapter 3 the character has committed to something they cannot easily undo. |
| 4 to 6 | about 7,500 | Things get harder. Chapter 6 is the midpoint: a discovery or a reversal that changes what the character wants or what they think is going on. |
| 7 to 9 | about 7,500 | The cost of the new direction. Chapter 9 ends at the low point, where the old way of solving the problem no longer works. |
| 10 to 12 | about 7,500 | The final push and the ending. A novella can close quickly; one chapter after the climax is usually enough. |
The plan is a starting point, not a rule. A Christmas Carol runs a similar shape across five staves: four visits, then the morning after. What matters is that each block moves the single line of action forward; a block that only adds background is the first thing to cut.
The chapter planner works out a plan like this for any length, and the free plot generator gives you a story spine to fill it with.
Common novella problems
- A novel's opening on a novella's budget. Three chapters of set-up is a quarter of a 12-chapter novella. Start closer to the problem and let the background arrive as it is needed.
- Too many characters. Every named character the reader has to track costs attention. If two characters do the same job, merge them.
- A subplot that never pays off. In a novel a side story can breathe; in a novella it competes with the main line for space. Give it a clear role in the ending or cut it.
- A summary where the climax should be. Short books are often short at the wrong end. If the final quarter has fewer words than the first, check whether the big scene is shown or only reported.
- Pricing it like a novel. Readers see the page count on the listing. A novella priced the same as a full novel in its genre needs a strong reason; a price at the bottom of the 70% ebook band is often the easier sell.
Novellas in a series
Short books suit a series. A novella can be a prequel that introduces a world before the first novel, a side story about a secondary character, or one instalment in a run of short books released close together. For readers, a short book is an easy way to try a new author; for the author, a novella is quicker to write and edit, so a series can grow faster.
If the novella is the first book of a series, the next book should pick up from what is true at its end. The AI book series writer continues your own book as the next volume, carrying over the characters, the world and what has already happened.
Should your first book be a novella?
It depends on where you want the book to go. A novella is a whole story at a size you can finish, revise and publish in a fraction of the time a novel takes, and finishing is the step most first books never reach. You learn the full arc of a story, from opening to ending, and you can put the result in front of readers sooner.
If you plan to query literary agents, look at each agent's guidelines first: the genre ranges in Writer's Digest's widely used word-count guide are all for novels, so check that an agent takes novellas before you send one. If you plan to self-publish, the limits are the ones on this page: price the paperback with the $9.99 line in mind, price the ebook with the $2.99 line in mind, and choose a trim that gives the book a spine.
Either way, a beta read helps more on a short book than you might expect, because every scene carries more weight. The AI beta reader gives a first read in minutes, chapter by chapter.
A novella as an audiobook
At the median narration pace of 164 words a minute that we measured, a 20,000-word novella runs about 2 hr 2 min and a 35,000-word one about 3 hr 33 min: a commute or two, or one long drive. That length suits listeners who want to finish something in a day, and it keeps narration costs down if you pay a narrator by the finished hour.
The audiobook length calculator gives the running time for any word count, and the AI audiobook generator narrates a finished novella chapter by chapter.
Publishing a novella on KDP: a checklist
- Check the page count at each trim. Aim for 79 pages or more if you want a title on the spine, and 75 or more if you want a hardcover. A smaller trim adds pages; our guide to KDP trim sizes compares them.
- Price the paperback against the $9.99 line. 50% below it, 60% from it on Amazon.com. Use the calculator above for your own numbers.
- Price the ebook against the $2.99 line. 70% from $2.99 to $12.99, 35% outside it.
- Make the print files. A print-ready interior PDF at your trim and a full-wrap cover sized to the final page count. Our step-by-step guide to creating a print-ready PDF covers both, and the AI book formatter sets the interior.
- Design a cover that says "short read". A novella competes with novels in search results, so the cover and subtitle should tell readers what kind of book it is. The AI book cover generator designs the front.
- Write the description. State the length plainly ("a novella", or "a short read") so readers know what they are buying, and lead with the hook. The book description generator drafts one.
Every other KDP setting, from ISBN to categories, is in our guide to self-publishing on Amazon KDP. If you would rather have the whole package made for you, the AI novel generator for KDP writes the book and exports the files KDP asks for.
Writing a novella with AI
In Inkfluence AI the length control is the number of chapters, which you set in your prompt: up to 5 on the free plan and up to 40 on paid plans. Adult fiction written in the app runs at about 2,000 words a chapter, so a novella is 8 to 16 chapters, roughly 17,000 to 34,000 words. The free plan's five chapters make a novelette-length opening, about 10,000 words, which is a good way to test an idea before committing to the full book.
Fiction is written in order, with a running record of characters, places and events so that later chapters stay consistent with earlier ones. When the book is done you can edit any chapter, add chapters if it needs to grow, and export a Kindle file and a print-ready paperback PDF at 6 x 9, 5.5 x 8.5 or 5 x 8.

Novella questions
How many words is a novella?
Between 17,500 and 39,999 words in the definition the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association uses for its Nebula Awards. The Hugo Awards use the same lines, 17,500 to 40,000 words. Below 17,500 is a novelette, and below 7,500 a short story.
What is the difference between a novella and a novel?
Length first: 40,000 words or more makes a novel. In practice a novella is also usually narrower, with one main plot, a small cast and a short span of time, so it can be read in one or two sittings.
Is 40,000 words a novel or a novella?
A novel in the SFWA definition, which starts novels at 40,000 words. The Hugo Awards put the line at 40,000 too, describing novellas as "between 17,500 and 40,000 words", so a book right on the line is a short novel for both purposes.
Is 30,000 words a novella?
Yes, comfortably. A 30,000-word book with plenty of dialogue prints to about 124 pages at 6 x 9 inches in our export and takes about 1 hr 55 min to read at average speed.
How many pages is a novella?
Roughly 70 to 160 pages at 6 x 9 inches, depending on length and how much dialogue it has. Every one of the 8 classic novellas we typeset came to 110 pages or fewer at 6 x 9; a modern, dialogue-heavy 30,000-word novella is about 124.
How should I price a novella on Amazon?
For the ebook, KDP pays 70% only between $2.99 and $12.99 on Amazon.com, and 35% below that, so $2.99 earns about $1.99 a copy and $1.99 about $0.70. For the paperback, KDP pays 60% from $9.99 on Amazon.com and 50% below it: a 30,000-word paperback earns $1.51 at $7.99 and $3.50 at $9.99.
Can a novella be a hardcover on KDP?
Only if it reaches 75 pages, KDP's hardcover minimum. 4 of the 8 classic novellas we typeset fell below that at 6 x 9 inches, so they could only be paperbacks at that size.
How do I write a novella with AI?
Ask for fewer chapters. In Inkfluence AI the chapter count, which you set in your prompt, is the length control; adult fiction in the app runs at about 2,000 words a chapter, so 8 to 16 chapters gives a novella of roughly 17,000 to 34,000 words.
