Best AI Audiobook Generator for Self-Published Authors (2026)

You already have the book. The real question is which route turns it into an audiobook that a store will accept and that pays you. This guide starts there: seven routes with their current rules, then the generators, then what narrating one 70,000-word novel costs on each, with the sums shown.

By Sam May, founder of Inkfluence AI

A paperback novel with a painted lighthouse cover lies open beside oatmeal headphones and a clipped printed manuscript on a honey-wood desk, with an audio editor showing a long waveform on the laptop behind
Book in, audiobook out: the store you aim for decides the tool, not the other way round.

Short answer

Pick the route first. If Amazon invites you, KDP Virtual Voice is free and sells on Audible. If you are a US author with an English book, Spotify's free narration covers five books. Google Play narrates non-fiction for free in six languages. For everything else, make the files yourself: Inkfluence AI is our pick for authors, because it holds the book and the audiobook in one place and narrates a 25-chapter novel for $12.99 to $19.99. ElevenLabs is the pick when you need INaudio or ElevenReader, at about $77 to $99 a novel. AI narration you make yourself cannot go to ACX.

What changed in 2026

Most "best AI audiobook" lists were written before these changes. Each line below was read on the store's or vendor's own page on 31 Oct 2026.

  • 15 Apr: ACX's audio submission requirements now say an audiobook "must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized", and that "unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI, or automated recordings in ACX titles is prohibited". The same page says Audible is working to accept third-party AI audio from publishers and creators who are interested. (ACX)
  • 26 May: Audible's new royalty model pays 50% for exclusive and 30% for non-exclusive distribution to new ACX users; the legacy 40% and 25% end by the close of the year. (ACX)
  • 29 May: ACX's voice-replica FAQ describes a limited beta in which a human narrator sells an AI replica of their own voice. That is the only AI narration on ACX. (ACX)
  • 2026: Spotify for Authors opened free AI narration to US self-published authors: up to five audiobooks from an EPUB, English only. (Spotify)
  • 22 Oct: Kindle Unlimited became Kindle+ ($11.99 a month in the US) with narration on thousands of titles. Virtual Voice audiobooks from KDP Select ebooks join it automatically. (Amazon, KDP)
  • Still true: Virtual Voice is an invite-only beta on the US marketplace, and Google Play's auto-narration is still free "for a limited time".
  • Gone: Play.ht, still recommended in many roundups, did not resolve when we checked on 31 Oct 2026. It is not in this comparison.

Which route fits your book

Every AI audiobook ends up in one of seven places. The left column says who narrates and who can use the route; the badge says whether it is open to a typical self-published author today. Our store-by-store rules page goes deeper on Kobo, Apple Books and Author's Republic.

Three questions that pick your route

Answer these before you open any tool. Most wasted audiobook money comes from narrating a book first and checking the store's rules second.

Question 1

Must it be on Audible?

If yes, you have two doors: a human narrator through ACX, or Virtual Voice if Amazon invites you. AI audio you make yourself cannot go to ACX, so no generator below changes that. Our ACX policy explainer has the full wording.

Question 2

Is the ebook in KDP Select?

KDP says Virtual Voice audiobooks follow their ebook's Select status and must be exclusive to Audible during enrollment. Going wide with your own audio and enrolling in Virtual Voice for the same book do not mix. See KDP Select vs wide.

Question 3

Where do you live, and what language?

Virtual Voice and Spotify's tool are US only; Spotify's is English only. Google Play covers six languages. If you are outside the US or writing in another language, making your own files is usually the only open route.

Three cream index cards pinned to a cork board read Human narrator, Store narrates it and Your own files, with a small microphone, a tiny paperback and a USB stick hanging beneath them
Every route is one of three kinds: a human reads it, a store's AI reads it, or you bring your own files.

The split that decides everything: who makes the audio

The stores fall into two camps, and most comparisons blur them. In the first camp the store makes the audio for you: Virtual Voice, Spotify's Creation Tools and Google Play's auto-narration. You upload nothing but the ebook, you pay nothing, and in return you accept the store's voices, its languages, its price band and its rules about where else the audio may go.

In the second camp you make the files and the store simply sells them: Google Play's normal upload, Kobo Writing Life, ElevenReader and your own shop. This is where the generators on this page live. You choose the voice, fix the names it gets wrong, set the price and keep the files. The cost is a subscription or a credit pack, and the work of uploading.

One distributor sits between the camps. Voices by INaudio takes AI audio, but only as an unmodified package from Google Play Books, ElevenLabs or Spoken Press, according to its digital voice help page. Plain MP3 files from any other tool are refused. That single rule is the main reason ElevenLabs stays on this list despite its price.

The generators compared: book in, audiobook out

Prices are from each vendor's own pricing page, checked 31 Oct 2026. The middle column is the cheapest way to narrate one 70,000-word, 25-chapter novel on that tool; the sums are in the next section. For a voice-by-voice listening comparison, see our best AI voice generators for audiobooks test.

What one 70,000-word novel costs on each, with the sums

This is a worked example on published prices, not a test of output quality. The book: a 70,000-word novel in 25 chapters of about 2,800 words. Three conversions do all the work.

7.5 hours

70,000 / 9,300 words an hour = 7.53 hours, or about 452 minutes. ACX says most performers narrate about 9,300 words an hour.

7 h 7 min

70,000 / 164 words a minute = 427 minutes, our measured AI average across 8,015 chapters (see the length calculator). We use the longer 7.5 hours below.

~420,000

Characters, at about 6 per English word once spaces and punctuation are counted: 70,000 x 6. Character-billed tools charge on this number.

The arithmetic, tool by tool

  • Inkfluence AI: each chapter up to about 8,000 words counts as one audiobook chapter, so the novel is 25. Free plan plus a 25-credit pack: $12.99, Standard voices. Premium includes 30 a month: $19.99, with HD voices. Creator includes 15 a month, so either two months or one month plus a 15-credit pack: $9.99 + $9.99 = $19.98.
  • ElevenLabs: its pricing page says 1 credit per character on its Multilingual v2 model, so about 420,000 credits. Pro gives 600,000 a month: $99, with 180,000 left for re-takes. Creator gives 121,000 a month, so four months (484,000): $11 first month + 3 x $22 = $77, spread over four months.
  • Speechify Studio: voiceover costs 1 credit per second. 7.5 hours = 27,000 seconds. Studio Starter lists 86,400 Studio credits with its plan: $100, billed yearly only.
  • WellSaid: it caps downloads, not generation. 452 minutes against Pro's 180 download minutes a month = 3 months x $49 = $147. Starter's 20 minutes a month would take 23 months.
  • Murf: Creator lists 24 hours of voice generation a year at $19 a month billed yearly. The novel uses 7.5 of those hours: $228 up front, with room for two more books.
  • Google Play and Spotify: $0 if the book qualifies. The price is paid in conditions instead: the store's voices, its languages and its rules.

#1 for authors

1. Inkfluence AI: the book and its audiobook in one place

Every other generator here starts from a blank text box. Inkfluence AI starts from the book. Write it with AI, or import your manuscript from Word, EPUB, PDF or text, and the audiobook studio opens on the same chapters you already edited. When you change a paragraph, the studio marks that chapter "Recorded before changes" and a "Changed / new" button selects exactly the chapters that need redoing, so you only pay for those.

What the studio does

  • Pick chapters and a narrator, then Record. Recording runs on our side, so you can close the tab.
  • 49 narrator voices in 14 languages, including English (US, British, Australian and more), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Arabic. Hearing a voice is free.
  • A different narrator for one chapter, for a foreword or a second point of view; and a narration pace of Slower, Normal or Faster.
  • Fix a name the narrator says wrong by clicking the word and writing it as it sounds (for example shiv-AWN). The fix applies to the whole book.
  • Read a chapter yourself in the browser, or upload your own recording. Those chapters use no credits and are evened out to the same volume.
  • Download the whole book as one MP3, or a ZIP with one MP3 per chapter, numbered in reading order, encoded at 44.1 kHz, 192 kbps constant bitrate, mono and loudness-normalised.

Plans and limits, stated plainly

The free plan writes 5 chapters a month but includes no audiobook chapters. Creator ($9.99 a month or $89 a year) includes 15 audiobook chapters a month in Standard voices. Premium ($19.99 a month or $179 a year) includes 30 a month and the HD voices, which sound warmer and closer to a human narrator. Credit packs (15 for $9.99, 25 for $12.99, 50 for $24.99) also pay for audiobook chapters on any plan. A very long chapter, over about 8,000 words, counts as more than one.

Two honest limits. First, Inkfluence makes the files; it does not publish audio to any store for you, so you upload the chapter ZIP to Google Play, Kobo or your own shop. Second, the chapter ZIP meets ACX's technical spec, but ACX does not accept AI narration, so the format does not open Audible. If you read the whole book yourself, the same ZIP is how you get your own voice into ACX's format: see narrate your own audiobook.

Fiction gets the same studio with per-chapter narrators for different points of view; the fiction audiobook generator page shows that workflow. The step-by-step audiobook guide walks through a whole book.

A laptop on a wooden desk shows an audiobook studio with a chapter list, book text with one word highlighted and a narrator panel with a play button, beside a printed chapter page with a circled word
Fixing a name once fixes it in every chapter, which matters most in fiction.

2. ElevenLabs Studio: the widest door to AI-friendly stores

ElevenLabs is a voice company first, and its Studio is where long-form projects live. Its audiobooks page lists downloadable files plus delivery to Spotify, INaudio and other partners, and its own app, ElevenReader, pays 60% of direct sales and $0.20 per hour streamed with no exclusivity. Because INaudio accepts ElevenLabs packages and refuses plain MP3s from other tools, ElevenLabs is the only general-purpose generator here with a documented route into a wide distributor.

The trade is cost. On its pricing page, Starter is $6 a month for 30,000 credits, Creator $22 for 121,000 and Pro $99 for 600,000, with text-to-speech at 1 credit per character on its Multilingual v2 model. A 70,000-word novel is roughly 420,000 characters, so one month of Pro or four months of Creator. ElevenLabs itself says a book runs "free to ~$200". Every re-take after an edit spends credits again.

Pick it when INaudio or ElevenReader is the plan. Otherwise the same novel costs a fifth as much elsewhere. Our voice generator test covers how its voices compare by ear.

3. Speechify Studio: cheap hours, no store route

Speechify's Studio is a voiceover and dubbing product with more than 1,000 voices, separate from its reading app. The Studio pricing page lists Studio Starter at $100 a year with 86,400 Studio credits and Studio Creator at $300 a year with 345,600; voiceover costs 1 credit per second, and the free plan has no commercial rights. That makes it one of the cheapest ways to buy raw hours: our 7.5-hour novel uses about a third of Starter's credits.

There is no book workflow or store: you paste chapters in, download MP3s and upload them yourself, on a yearly commitment. Our Inkfluence AI vs Speechify comparison goes through the differences for authors.

4. Murf: built for business voiceover

Murf sells to teams making training videos and ads. The Murf pricing page, read in a browser on 31 Oct 2026, lists Creator at $19 a month billed yearly ($228 a year) with 24 hours of voice generation a year, 200+ voices, unlimited downloads and commercial rights, and Business at $66 a month billed yearly with 96 hours.

For one novel that is $228 up front for 7.5 of your 24 hours: fair across three books a year, the most expensive option here for one. It has no store route. The older free AI audiobook generators comparison covers its free tier.

5. WellSaid: fine voices, tight download caps

WellSaid's English voices are well regarded for narration, but the WellSaid pricing page caps what you can download, not what you can generate. Starter is $19 a month with 20 download minutes a month (or $120 a year with 240 minutes a year); Pro is $49 a month with 180 a month (or $396 a year with 2,160). All languages are only on Enterprise.

A 452-minute novel needs three months of Pro, $147. For a single novel the caps get in the way. If you are weighing AI against a person at this price point, read AI vs human audiobook narrators and our cost comparison with human narrators.

Free store tools: Google Play, Spotify and Virtual Voice

Each store narrates your ebook for free and sells the result itself. Use them when your book fits.

Google Play Books auto-narration

Free "for a limited time". EPUB in English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi or Brazilian Portuguese; the ebook must be sold on Google Play and you must own the audio rights. 52% revenue share.

Google says it works best on titles with limited dialogue, so it is a better fit for non-fiction than for a novel. After publishing you can download the files and sell them elsewhere, as long as the audiobook also stays on Google Play. (Google)

Spotify Audiobook Creation Tools

Free for up to five audiobooks, for self-published authors in the US, English only, from an EPUB, with a validated payment profile and "some limits on usage". Non-exclusive, with wider reach through INaudio.

Spotify's distribution terms (updated 4 May 2026) pay 50% of your suggested price on single sales plus a share of a subscription pool. Spotify does not share digital-voice titles with referral partners. (Spotify)

KDP Virtual Voice

Invite-only beta on the US marketplace, with an interest list. The Kindle ebook must be live, reflowable, have a table of contents and a cover, and be in English, Spanish, Italian or French. 80 voices, a different voice per chapter, and you edit the narration before publishing.

Flat 40% at $3.99 to $14.99, labelled as virtual voice. KDP Select ebooks put the audio into Kindle+, paid per page first read or heard, and Audible Plus. (KDP)

What each route pays on a $14.99 sale

Same book, same $14.99 list price, one single sale. $14.99 is the top of Virtual Voice's price band, so every route can use it. Subscription and streaming income is left out because each store pays it from a pool that changes month to month.

The direct sale wins per copy and loses on reach: nobody finds your Gumroad page unless you send them there. The usual answer is both. Sell through a store for discovery and keep a direct link for your newsletter. Our guide to selling your ebook covers the direct side, and the royalty calculator runs the ebook and paperback numbers for the same book.

The files each route expects, and the ebook you need first

Three of the seven routes start from your ebook, not from audio. Get the ebook right and half the audiobook work is done.

An EPUB, for Spotify and Google Play

Both store tools narrate from an EPUB file. Clean chapter headings matter, because the chapter breaks become the audio chapters. Inkfluence AI exports EPUB from the same book; our guide to ebook formats explains what makes one clean.

A live Kindle ebook, for Virtual Voice

KDP lists a reflowable ebook with a Kindle or NCX table of contents, a cover, no pre-order, not public domain, and a title under 200 characters. When you publish the ebook, KDP asks whether text, images or translations are AI-generated: see the KDP AI disclosure rules.

Chapter MP3s, for uploads

Google Play accepts MP3, AAC, FLAC, WAV, ZIP or LPF uploads, and asks you to choose "Synthesized voice" for an AI-generated audiobook (Google help). Most stores want one file per chapter in reading order, which is what Inkfluence's chapter ZIP gives you.

ACX's spec, as a quality bar

ACX asks for 192 kbps or higher CBR MP3 at 44.1 kHz, -23 to -18 dB RMS, peaks no higher than -3 dB, one chapter per file, each under 120 minutes. It is the strictest common spec, so files that meet it rarely bounce elsewhere; it does not make AI audio eligible for ACX. See making an ACX audiobook from your ebook.

How to make your audiobook in Inkfluence AI

Five steps from a finished manuscript to files you can upload. The ebook to audiobook walkthrough has screenshots of each one.

Step 1

Bring in the book

Import a Word, EPUB, PDF or text file, or write the book in Inkfluence. Check the chapter breaks: each chapter becomes one audio file.

Step 2

Choose a narrator

Open Turn into Audiobook, play voice samples for free, then use Preview this chapter to hear your own opening in that voice.

Step 3

Fix names before recording

Click any character or place name and write how it sounds. Hearing it in the sentence is free and the fix covers every chapter.

Step 4

Record and listen

Tick the chapters and press Record. The panel shows the cost first. Listen through, then re-record only what you changed.

Step 5

Download and upload

Take the chapter ZIP to Google Play or Kobo, and the single MP3 or ZIP to your own shop. Label the narration as a synthesised voice.

Before you start

Check the length

Run your word count through the audiobook length calculator to see the runtime for each voice.

Audiobook readers are often people who would never have found the time for the print edition.

Six mistakes that cost authors money

All of them are avoidable before you record a minute.

Narrating for ACX

Paying for AI narration, then finding ACX bans it. No file format or export setting changes that rule.

Plain MP3s to INaudio

INaudio takes AI audio only as unmodified packages from three named providers. Files from anywhere else are refused.

Mixing Select and wide

A Virtual Voice audiobook for a KDP Select ebook must be Audible-exclusive while enrolled, which rules out selling your own audio of that book elsewhere.

Paying per character for re-takes

On character-billed tools every edit after recording spends credits again. Edit the text fully first, and fix names before the first take.

Ignoring download caps

Some plans cap downloaded minutes, not generation. Check the cap against your book's runtime before you subscribe.

Skipping the AI label

Google Play, Spotify and Kobo all ask you to mark a synthesised voice when you upload. Tick it: it is their rule, and listeners expect to know.

Voices, sound quality and human narrators

This page compares routes, files and costs, not voices. For the voice-by-voice comparison, see our AI voice generators for audiobooks test and is AI audiobook voice quality good enough to sell. In short: AI narration holds up best on non-fiction read in one steady voice, which matches Google's note that its auto-narration suits books with little dialogue. Fiction needs a narrator per point of view and every name fixed before recording.

A human narrator is still the right call when Audible is essential or the book is a performance piece. The complete guide to AI audiobooks covers that decision, and AI audiobook trends tracks where the stores are heading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI audiobook generator for self-published authors?
For an author who wants the book and its audiobook in one place, Inkfluence AI: 49 voices in 14 languages, book-wide pronunciation fixes, single-chapter re-takes, and the whole book as one MP3 or a ZIP of chapter MP3s. A 25-chapter novel costs $12.99 to $19.99. Pick ElevenLabs Studio if you need INaudio or ElevenReader, and use Google Play or Spotify's free tools if your book fits their rules.
Can I put an AI-narrated audiobook on Audible?
Not through ACX. ACX's submission requirements, updated 15 April 2026, say an audiobook must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized. The exceptions are Amazon's own KDP Virtual Voice (an invite-only US beta that narrates your Kindle ebook) and ACX's voice-replica beta, in which a human narrator sells an AI replica of their own voice.
How much does it cost to turn a 70,000-word novel into an AI audiobook?
For a 25-chapter, 70,000-word novel, checked 31 October 2026: $0 on Google Play or Spotify's free tools if the book qualifies, $12.99 to $19.99 on Inkfluence AI, $77 to $99 on ElevenLabs, $100 on Speechify Studio, $147 on WellSaid and $228 on Murf.
Where can I sell an audiobook I made with Inkfluence AI?
Google Play Books (upload the chapter files and choose Synthesized voice as the narrator), Kobo Writing Life, and direct sales through Gumroad, Payhip or your own site. It cannot go to ACX or Voices by INaudio.
Is Amazon's Virtual Voice open to everyone?
No. KDP describes it as an invite-only beta on the US marketplace. Your Kindle ebook must be live, reflowable, have a table of contents and a cover, and be in English, Spanish, Italian or French. You can join an interest list. It pays a flat 40% at a list price of $3.99 to $14.99.
Is Spotify's AI narration really free?
Spotify says its Audiobook Creation Tools are free for up to five audiobooks for self-published authors in the United States, for English titles uploaded as EPUB. You need a validated payment profile, and Spotify says some usage limits apply. For more than five books you contact Spotify for Authors support.
Does Google Play Books auto-narration cost anything?
Not at the moment. Google says that for a limited time there is no charge to create, publish and download auto-narrated audiobooks. Publishers receive a 52% revenue share. If you sell the files elsewhere, the audiobook must also be sold on Google Play Books.
Which route pays the most per sale?
Selling directly: a $14.99 sale on Gumroad leaves $12.99 before card fees, but you bring every buyer. Among stores, ElevenReader pays 60% ($8.99), Google Play auto-narration 52% ($7.79), Spotify 50% on single sales ($7.50) and Virtual Voice 40% ($6.00).
Can I narrate some chapters myself and use AI for the rest?
Yes. In Inkfluence AI's audiobook studio you can record a chapter in the browser or upload your own recording (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC or OGG, up to 2 hours a chapter). Your recordings use no credits and are evened out to the same volume as the narrated chapters.
Is Play.ht still an option for audiobooks?
No. Play.ht still appears in many 2026 roundups, but its domain did not resolve when we checked on 31 October 2026, so it is not in this comparison.
How long will my audiobook be?
ACX says most narrators read about 9,300 words an hour, so a 70,000-word novel runs about 7.5 hours. We measured AI narration at an average of 164 words a minute across 8,015 chapters, which gives about 7 hours 7 minutes. Our audiobook length calculator does the sum for any book.
