How to Print One Copy of a Book (2026)
Every way to get a single printed copy of your own book in 2026: Amazon KDP proof and author copies, Lulu, IngramSpark, a copy shop or your home printer, with real costs, file rules, watermarks and timing.
Quick Answer
Yes, you can print just one copy. The cheapest real paperback is an Amazon KDP proof copy: printing cost (from $2.30 in the US) plus shipping, no publishing needed, but it carries a "Not for Resale" band. For a clean copy, publish and order an author copy, or use Lulu's personal printing. A copy shop binds one today. Make the print files in Inkfluence AI.
Updated 9 October 2026. Every vendor rule and price below was checked on the vendor's own page that day.
Wanting one printed copy of a book is common and reasonable: a family history for your mother, a picture book with your grandson's name in it, a novel draft you want to read on paper with a pen, a single copy to check before you sell. Printers used to need a run of hundreds. Print on demand changed that years ago, but the rules for a single copy are scattered across help pages that each describe one route.
This guide puts them side by side. It covers the six real ways to get one copy (two from Amazon KDP, Lulu, IngramSpark, a copy shop and your own printer), what each costs, whether the copy is marked, what file it needs and how long it takes. Then it walks through the route most people should take, step by step, and ends with the timing you need for a Christmas gift.
Six ways to print one copy (October 2026 table)
Every route below will print a single copy. They differ in four things that matter for one copy: whether the book has to be public, whether the copy is marked, what kind of file you need, and how fast it reaches you.
| Route | Cost basis (one copy) | Marked? | Minimum / maximum | Book must be public? | Turnaround | File it needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KDP proof copy (our pick for most people) | KDP printing cost (from $2.30 in the US) + shipping + tax | Yes: "Not for Resale" watermark, barcode with no ISBN | 1 to 5 per order | No, the book stays a draft | Cart link by email within 4 hours; delivery date shown at checkout | KDP interior PDF + full-wrap cover PDF |
| KDP author copy | Printing cost + shipping + tax | No | 1 to 999 per order | Yes, Live on Amazon | Review up to 72 hours (Amazon.com), option appears up to 24 hours after Live, then shipping | Same as above |
| Lulu personal printing | Manufacturing cost from Lulu's calculator + shipping | No | One copy is fine | No: no ISBN, no tax forms, no bookstore listing | Print plus shipping; shown at checkout | Interior PDF sized trim + 0.125" bleed, 0.5" safety margin |
| IngramSpark (print only) | Printing + shipping + handling + tax; free account and upload | No | No stated minimum | No: a SKU instead of an ISBN keeps it out of distribution | About 3 business days to an e-proof, then print and ship | Interior with 0.125" bleed + IngramSpark cover template |
| Copy shop (Staples, FedEx Office, local) | Per page: Staples from $0.34 B&W, $0.82 colour, plus binding | No | One copy is fine | No | Same day at many stores if ordered by noon | Any PDF; Letter-size pages print best |
| Home printer | Paper, ink, a long-reach stapler | No | One copy is fine | No | Tonight | Any PDF; a booklet layout for folding |
Checked against each vendor's own help or pricing page on 9 October 2026. KDP does not publish shipping rates or delivery days; both appear at checkout. See Sources.
Three things stand out. First, a KDP proof is the only route that gives you a real bookshop-style paperback, printed and bound by a book printer, without putting your book on sale or touching an ISBN on the cover. That makes it the best default for a single copy, as long as you can live with the band. Second, every route that gives a clean, unmarked paperback asks for something in return: a public Amazon listing (author copy) or a stricter file with bleed built in (Lulu, IngramSpark). Third, copy shops and home printers are the only same-day options, and they produce a bound document rather than a paperback with a printed spine.
We recommend making the files in Inkfluence AI because its KDP package gives you exactly what the KDP routes ask for in one download: the interior PDF at your trim size, a full-wrap cover PDF with the spine sized from your real page count, a front cover JPG, an EPUB and a READ ME with the settings KDP will ask you for. Its limits are worth knowing up front. The package needs any paid plan or a credit pack. The files are built for KDP, not for Lulu or IngramSpark (more on that below). And Inkfluence makes files; it does not print or ship books itself.
Which route fits you?
Open the line that sounds most like you. Each one names the route, what it costs you in effort and the one thing to watch.
"I want one real paperback to read or check, and I don't mind a band on the cover"
Route: KDP proof copy. Upload the files, approve the preview, request a proof, pay printing plus shipping. Nothing goes on sale.
Watch out for: the 24-hour window to finish checkout after KDP emails you the cart link.
"It's a gift and it has to look like a shop-bought book"
Route A: publish on KDP and order an author copy (no band, but the book is publicly listed on Amazon; you can unpublish it afterwards).
Route B: Lulu personal printing (no band, no listing, no ISBN), if you can make an interior PDF with bleed.
Watch out for: privacy. A personalised children's book with a real child's name is often better as a Lulu private print or a proof than a public listing.
"I need it this week, ideally today"
Route: a copy shop. Upload a PDF online, choose coil binding and a card cover, pick it up the same day at many stores if you order by noon.
Watch out for: it will be a bound document on Letter-size pages, not a paperback with a spine.
"It's a short children's book, a booklet or a zine, and I want it tonight"
Route: home booklet printing. Print the PDF as a booklet on both sides, fold, and staple the spine with a long-reach stapler.
Watch out for: page count. A booklet needs a multiple of four pages, and thick stacks will not fold flat.
"I plan to sell it later, I just want to see it in print first"
Route: KDP proof now, author copies after you publish. Our guide to publishing a KDP paperback covers the full setup, and how to sell children's books covers fairs, schools and shops.
Watch out for: selling proofs. They say "Not for Resale" for a reason; sell author copies.
"I'm outside the US"
Route: KDP proofs and author copies can be ordered from Amazon.com, .ca, .co.uk and the EU Amazon sites; pick the one for your shipping address. Lulu and IngramSpark print in several countries.
Watch out for: customs fees on EU deliveries ordered from outside the EU (KDP warns about this), and longer delivery in December.
How much one copy costs
For the print-on-demand routes, one copy costs the same per book as a hundred. You pay the printing cost, plus shipping, plus any tax. KDP publishes its printing cost formula, which makes it the easiest to price exactly. Lulu and IngramSpark price through calculators, so check yours there before you order.
KDP printing cost for one paperback (Amazon.com, USD)
| Ink | Regular trim (up to 6.12" x 9") | Large trim (wider or taller) |
|---|---|---|
| Black ink | 24 to 110 pages: $2.30 flat. Over 110: $1.00 + $0.012 a page | 24 to 110 pages: $2.84 flat. Over 110: $1.00 + $0.017 a page |
| Premium colour | 24 to 40 pages: $3.60 flat. 42+: $1.00 + $0.065 a page | 24 to 40 pages: $4.20 flat. 42+: $1.00 + $0.08 a page |
| Standard colour | 72 to 600 pages: $1.00 + $0.0255 a page | 72 to 600 pages: $1.00 + $0.0402 a page |
Source: KDP Printing cost help page, Amazon.com paperback, checked 9 October 2026. Shipping and tax are added at checkout and are not published as a rate.
Worked through for common books, using that formula:
- A 6 x 9 novel or memoir, 100 pages, black ink: $2.30.
- The same book at 200 pages: $1.00 + 200 x $0.012 = $3.40.
- A 300-page 6 x 9 novel: $1.00 + 300 x $0.012 = $4.60.
- An 8.5 x 8.5 picture book, 24 to 40 pages, premium colour: $4.20.
- An 8.5 x 11 colouring book, 50 pages, black ink: $2.84.
- An 8.5 x 11 full-colour workbook, 50 pages: $1.00 + 50 x $0.08 = $5.00.
Shipping is usually the larger part of the bill for one copy, and proof and author copy orders do not qualify for free or Prime shipping. KDP shows the total, and the delivery estimate, on the last checkout page before you pay. If you want to play with trim sizes and page counts, our royalty and printing cost calculator uses the same KDP formulas, and the real cost of publishing a book covers everything else you might pay for.
Inkfluence AI data
Most print books made in Inkfluence are 6 x 9, and the middle one is 98 pages
Print trim chosen for 156 books whose authors downloaded a KDP package between 12 July and 9 October 2026.
The median page count, on the 147 of those books with one recorded, was 98 pages (half fell between 58 and 265). At 6 x 9 in black ink, a 98-page book costs $2.30 to print on Amazon.com.
Method: KDP package downloads logged 12 July to 9 October 2026, one count per book. Only books where the author set a print trim in the cover designer are in the chart; books left on the default are not counted. Page count is the figure shown in the cover designer's Print tab. Usage mix only.
Copy shop and Lulu costs
Copy shops price by the page. Staples lists document printing from $0.34 a page in black and white and $0.82 in colour, with coil, comb or adhesive-spine binding as extras, and stapled booklets from $1.70 per 8 pages in black and white ($4.04 in colour). FedEx Office lists bound presentations from $5.97 each. Those are starting prices for Letter-size pages, so a 200-page manuscript printed page by page can easily pass $50 before binding: ask the counter how they count double-sided pages before you order. For a long book, a single KDP proof is usually far cheaper than a copy shop. For a 20-page picture book you want this afternoon, the copy shop wins on time.
Lulu charges its manufacturing cost for personal printing and shows it in its pricing calculator as you choose size, paper, colour and binding (including hardcover). We have not quoted a Lulu price here because it depends on all of those choices; the calculator is the honest number.
Step by step: one KDP proof copy from an Inkfluence book
This is the route we recommend for most people: a real printed paperback, printing cost plus shipping, and your book never goes on sale. It takes about half an hour of setup once the book itself is finished.
1. Finish the book and pick the size
Write, import or finish your book in Inkfluence AI. In the Export window, set Page size: Trade 6 x 9 is the KDP default and fits most novels, memoirs and guides; 5 x 8 and 5.5 x 8.5 suit shorter books; 8.5 x 11 suits workbooks and colouring books; picture books made with the picture book maker use the 8.5 x 8.5 square. If you are unsure, our guide to print-ready PDF books explains trim, margins and fonts.
2. Make the cover and choose the paper
Design the front in the cover designer (AI cover art needs a paid plan or credits; you can also upload your own art). In the designer's Print tab, choose the paper and ink you will pick in KDP: black and white on white or cream, standard colour or premium colour. The paper changes the spine width, so set it now. Our cover generator page and the guide to designing a cover with AI cover the front itself.
3. Download the KDP package
Click Export, open the KDP tab and choose Export KDP Package (any paid plan or credit pack). One zip arrives with five files: the paperback manuscript PDF at exactly your trim size, the full-wrap paperback cover PDF (back, spine and front with its own 0.125" bleed, spine sized from the real page count), a front cover JPG for a Kindle edition, an EPUB and READ ME FIRST.txt, which lists the trim size, page count, spine width and paper to select. Picture books shorter than KDP's 24-page paperback minimum are padded with blank endpapers automatically. The KDP export help article has screenshots.
4. Set up a paperback draft on KDP
Create a free account at kdp.amazon.com, click Create, then Paperback. Fill in the title and author exactly as they appear on your cover, and answer the setup questions, including KDP's question about AI-generated content (our KDP AI disclosure guide explains how to answer). A draft is not visible on Amazon. Nobody can find or buy it.
5. Get the free ISBN, then upload the two print files
On the content page, KDP asks for an ISBN: paperbacks need one, and KDP gives you one free. A free KDP ISBN can only be used on KDP, which does not matter for a single copy. Then match the print options to the READ ME: ink and paper, trim size, and No bleed (the manuscript is exactly trim size; choosing "Bleed" makes KDP reject it). Upload the manuscript PDF in the manuscript box and the wrap PDF under Upload a print-ready PDF cover. Do not upload the JPG there: it is the ebook cover.
6. Approve the preview
Launch the Print Previewer and page through every spread. Look for text near the gutter, the cover lining up across the spine, and any page that renders differently from your PDF. When it looks right, approve it. You do not need to set a price or publish to order a proof.
7. Request the proof
Go to your Bookshelf, click the three dots next to the paperback and choose Request printed proofs. Pick the Amazon site for your shipping address and a quantity from 1 to 5. Within 4 hours KDP emails a link to a cart with your proof in it. Complete the order within 24 hours of that email, or the proof is removed from the cart and you have to request it again.
8. Check out and wait
At checkout you see the printing cost, the shipping options and a delivery estimate. Pay, and the order shows in your Amazon order history (not in KDP reports). KDP says it cannot speed up manufacturing even if you pick faster shipping, and the copy earns no royalty. Then leave the book in draft. If you later want clean copies, you can publish and order author copies from the same setup.
Get your book print-ready in one download
Write or import your book, design the cover, and export the interior PDF, full-wrap cover, EPUB and a READ ME with every KDP setting. Then order your one copy.
Make your print filesKDP proof copy vs author copy
Both are printed by the same Amazon printers at the same printing cost, and neither earns royalties. The differences are all about status and marking.
| Proof copy | Author copy | |
|---|---|---|
| Book status needed | Draft, after the Print Previewer is approved | Live, or Live with unpublished changes |
| Per order | Up to 5 | Up to 999 |
| Marking | "Not for Resale" watermark, unique barcode with no ISBN | None |
| Content | Includes your draft changes | The live version only; draft changes are left out |
| Resell or give away? | Not for resale | KDP says you may resell or give them away |
| Cost | Printing cost + shipping + tax | Printing cost + shipping + tax |
| Free or Prime shipping? | No | No |
So the choice is simple. If the band does not bother you, or the copy is for you, order a proof. If the copy is a gift or will sit on a shelf, you have two ways to lose the band: publish the book on Amazon and order an author copy, or print it somewhere else. Publishing is free and you can unpublish afterwards, but while it is live anyone can find and buy the book, and the listing (with your AI disclosure answer) goes through KDP's review of up to 72 hours on Amazon.com. KDP says low-content books such as journals and colouring books are taking 3 to 4 weeks to review right now, which matters if you are making a journal or a colouring book for Christmas.
Lulu and IngramSpark: clean copies, stricter files
Lulu personal printing
Lulu is the closest thing to "print my one book, privately, without a band". Its help centre describes a path called Print Copies for Your Own Use, for personal books, gifts and private distribution, that works "without an ISBN, tax forms (W-9 or W-8 BEN), or a public bookstore listing", with copies ordered from your account at manufacturing cost. It also prints hardcovers and other bindings for a single private copy.
The catch is the file. Lulu wants interior pages sized to the trim plus 0.125 inches of bleed on each side (a 6 x 9 book needs pages of 6.25 x 9.25 inches), with everything important at least 0.5 inches from the edge and a gutter of at least 0.2 inches. Its cover is built to its own template.
Our files and Lulu: Inkfluence's KDP interior is exactly the trim size with no bleed, because that is what KDP asks for, and its wrap cover is sized to KDP's spine formula. So the KDP package is not a ready-made Lulu upload, and we do not recommend sending it to Lulu as it is. If you want a Lulu hardcover, plan to rebuild the interior at bleed size in a layout tool; our comparison of book formatting software lists tools that can.
IngramSpark, print only
IngramSpark is a distributor first, but it will print copies of a book you never distribute. Its FAQ says that if you don't intend to distribute, it can assign a SKU "for printing purposes only" instead of an ISBN. Its pricing page says signing up and uploading cost nothing; you are billed printing, shipping, handling and tax on each order. After upload, its user guide puts file processing at about 3 business days before an e-proof is ready, and it recommends ordering one printed copy before any larger order. Interior files need 0.125 inches of bleed on the top, bottom and outside edges, and the cover comes from IngramSpark's template generator, so the same file caveat as Lulu applies.
For one copy, IngramSpark is more setup than KDP or Lulu. It makes sense if you already plan to sell through bookshops and libraries later, which is a different job; our self-publishing guide compares the platforms for that.
A copy shop: one copy today
When time matters more than finish, a copy shop is the answer. Staples and FedEx Office both take a PDF upload online and offer same-day or next-day pickup on many document orders placed by noon. The bindings that suit a book:
- Coil (spiral) binding: lies flat, takes thick documents (Staples says its spiral and comb binding handle 20 to 200+ pages), and looks good with a clear cover and a card back. Best for a novel draft, a recipe collection or a workbook.
- Saddle-stitched booklet: folded and stapled along the spine like a magazine. Staples offers 8 to 80 pages, and the page count must be a multiple of four. Best for a short picture book, a poetry pamphlet or a zine.
- Cover bind (adhesive spine): glued edge, closest to a paperback feel at a copy shop.
Copy shops print on standard sheets (Letter, Legal or Tabloid at Staples), so export your PDF at US Letter or A4 for a coil-bound copy, or at a half-letter size such as 5.5 x 8.5 for a booklet. In Inkfluence the regular PDF export does this on any plan, including free, where the PDF carries a small footer credit and a closing credit page; a paid plan or credit pack removes them. Our free PDF creator page shows what the export looks like. Ask for a heavier card stock on the cover; it costs little and makes the copy last.
A local independent print shop is worth a call too. Many will perfect-bind (glue) a single paperback with a printed cover, but prices and minimums vary by shop, so ask for a quote with your page count and trim size.
Printing one copy at home
Home printing is the right call for a short book you want tonight, a draft you will scribble on, or a picture book for a toddler who will love it to pieces. It is not the route for a keepsake: home paper and ink fade and curl in ways a print-on-demand paperback will not.
The booklet method (best for up to a few dozen pages)
- Export the PDF at half your paper size. In the Export window choose Digest 5.5 x 8.5 if you print on US Letter, or A5 if you print on A4. Two of those pages fit side by side on one sheet, so the folded booklet comes out at exactly that size.
- Make the page count a multiple of four. Each folded sheet carries four pages. Add a blank page or a dedication page if you are short.
- Print as a booklet. In Adobe Acrobat or the free Acrobat Reader, open Print, choose Booklet under Page Sizing and Handling, and pick Both sides if your printer prints double-sided automatically. If it does not, print the front sides, flip the stack and print the back sides. Acrobat puts the pages in folding order for you.
- Fold and staple. Fold the stack in half with a ruler or a bone folder to get a sharp crease, then open it over the arm of a long-reach stapler and put two or three staples along the fold.
- Trim if you want a clean edge. Thick booklets push the middle pages outward; a paper trimmer evens the open edge.
For a longer book
A 200-page book will not fold into one booklet. Either print it single-sided on Letter paper, punch it and use a binder or a copy shop's coil binding, or split it into several booklets of 16 to 32 pages each and sew or glue them together, which is how bookbinders work. For most people with a long book, a single KDP proof copy ends up cheaper and better than a home print: a 300-page 6 x 9 paperback costs $4.60 to print and arrives glued, trimmed and with a printed spine.
Print tonight, or order a real paperback

Start your book freePrinting a book as a gift: Christmas timing
Single copies are often gifts: a children's book starring a grandchild, a family cookbook, a poetry collection, a parent's life story. Timing is where these plans go wrong, because nobody publishes a firm date.
- KDP publishes no holiday cut-off dates. Its help pages say manufacturing time varies with total order volume, that it cannot expedite manufacturing, and that the delivery estimate appears at checkout.
- Third-party guides put a proof at roughly one to two weeks from order to doorstep in the US with standard shipping, and less with expedited shipping. December volumes can stretch that.
- The author copy route adds time: up to 72 hours of review for Amazon.com (longer for low-content books right now) plus up to 24 hours before the author copy button appears, before printing even starts.
Our honest advice for a US Christmas: finish the book by late November and order your printed copy by about 1 December. Allow longer outside the US and for author copies. If you miss that, a copy shop or a home booklet still gets a copy under the tree, and you can order the proper paperback for the new year. If the gift is a picture book starring your child, the personalized Christmas book page has a print-by calendar for Christmas 2026, country by country.
For picture-book gifts specifically, our guides to making a picture book with AI and keeping characters consistent cover the book itself, and the children's book creator starts one from a sentence; for a book with the child's name on every page, start at the personalized children's book maker. For a Christmas activity book, the Christmas colouring book generator makes print-ready pages.
Mistakes that cost a second copy
- Choosing "Bleed" in KDP for a no-bleed interior. Inkfluence's KDP manuscript is exactly trim size; pick "No bleed". The wrap cover already includes its own bleed.
- Uploading the front cover JPG as the paperback cover. KDP needs the full wrap PDF (back, spine and front). The JPG is for a Kindle edition.
- Changing paper type in KDP after exporting. Cream paper is thicker than white, so the spine changes. Set the paper in the cover designer's Print tab and re-export if you change your mind.
- Missing the 24-hour checkout window. Watch for KDP's email about 4 hours after you request the proof.
- Sending a KDP file to Lulu or IngramSpark. Both want bleed built into the interior page size; a KDP no-bleed file is the wrong shape.
- Skipping the preview. The Print Previewer catches gutter and spine problems before you pay for paper. Use it on every page.
- Forgetting the screen-to-paper gap. Colours print darker than they look on a screen and small type reads smaller on paper. That is exactly what your first copy is for; our book formatter page covers type sizes that print well.
If you plan to sell later, the next steps are in our KDP tools roundup and the colouring book and workbook selling guides. If you only want the ebook, how to make an ebook for free and ebook export and publishing cover that side. Plans and credit packs are on the pricing page.

Open the dashboardFrequently asked questions
Can I print just one copy of my book?
Yes. Amazon KDP prints single proof copies of a draft book (up to 5 per order) at printing cost plus shipping, Lulu prints single private copies with no ISBN or listing, and copy shops and home printers will print one copy of any PDF. Only KDP author copies need the book to be published first.
How much does it cost to print one copy of a book?
On Amazon KDP in the US, printing starts at $2.30 for a black-ink paperback up to 110 pages at regular trim; a 300-page 6 x 9 book is $4.60 and a 24 to 40 page premium colour 8.5 x 8.5 picture book is $4.20. Shipping and tax are added at checkout. A copy shop charges per page (Staples from $0.34 in black and white) plus binding.
Can I print one copy on Amazon without publishing?
Yes. Order a proof copy: set up the paperback as a draft, upload your files, approve the Print Previewer and choose Request printed proofs on your Bookshelf. The book stays a draft and is never listed. The copy carries a "Not for Resale" watermark.
What is the difference between a KDP proof copy and an author copy?
A proof copy is for a draft book, is limited to 5 per order, includes draft changes and carries a "Not for Resale" watermark with a barcode that has no ISBN. An author copy is for a live book, up to 999 per order, has no marking and may be resold or given away. Both cost printing plus shipping and earn no royalties.
How long does a KDP proof copy take to arrive?
KDP emails a cart link within 4 hours of your request and shows a delivery estimate at checkout; it publishes no fixed number of days and says it cannot speed up manufacturing. Third-party guides put a US proof at roughly one to two weeks with standard shipping. Allow longer in December.
Can I give a KDP proof copy as a gift?
Nothing stops you giving your own proof to a family member; it just says "Not for Resale" on the cover, and you must not sell it. If you want a gift without the band, publish and order an author copy, or print through Lulu's personal printing.
Do I need an ISBN to print one copy?
Not always. KDP requires an ISBN for paperbacks but gives you one free (usable only on KDP), and the proof's barcode carries no ISBN. Lulu's personal printing needs no ISBN, IngramSpark can assign a SKU for print-only books, and copy shops never ask.
Where can I print a single copy of a book near me?
Copy shops such as Staples and FedEx Office print and bind a single copy from an uploaded PDF, often for same-day pickup if you order by noon. Local print shops may also perfect-bind a single paperback; ask for a quote with your page count and size.
Can I print a book at home?
Yes. For a short book, export the PDF at half your paper size (5.5 x 8.5 for Letter, A5 for A4), print it as a booklet on both sides from Adobe Acrobat or Reader, fold it and staple the spine with a long-reach stapler. Long books are better coil-bound at a copy shop or ordered as a KDP proof.
Can Inkfluence AI print my book for me?
No. Inkfluence AI makes the files: a free PDF for home or copy-shop printing, and with any paid plan or credit pack a KDP package with the interior PDF, a full-wrap cover with the spine sized from your page count, a front cover JPG, an EPUB and a READ ME. You order the printed copy from KDP or a printer.
