A picture book written for one child

Make a Personalized Children's Book Starring Your Child

An original picture book written from your description of your child, with their name on every page and pictures that follow what you told us. Edit anything, keep the files, print a copy through Amazon KDP.

You write a few sentences about who they are and what should happen. The story is new, not a template with a name swapped in. Read it tonight as a PDF or ebook, and order a paperback for their shelf.

Or describe your child step by step and we write the idea for you.

Quick answer

To make a personalized children's book yourself, describe your child (name, age, hair, skin tone, glasses, favourite clothes, a pet) and the story you want. Inkfluence AI's picture book maker writes a 10 to 16 page story with their name in the text, paints a character sheet from your words and illustrates every page from it, so the child on page 2 is the child on page 12. Add a dedication, edit or repaint any page, then read it as a PDF or ebook or export a KDP package and order one paperback copy, which costs $4.20 to print on Amazon.com for 24 to 40 colour pages, plus shipping. There is no photo upload, and we don't print or ship the book ourselves.

At bedtime a father sits on the edge of his son's bed holding a square paperback picture book titled Theo and the Lighthouse Cat, whose cover shows a boy with dark curly hair, round glasses and a yellow raincoat beside a lighthouse with a black-and-white cat; the boy in the bed has the same curly hair and round glasses.
The boy on the cover has his hair, his glasses and his raincoat because the description said so. Staged photo.

What you get: a picture book with your child's name on every page

A personalised children's book is only as good as the story around the name. A name on page one and a generic plot after that is a nice novelty for one reading. A story built around one child, where the dog is their dog, the raincoat is their raincoat and the problem is one they actually have, is the book that gets asked for again at bedtime.

That is what this page is about. You describe your child and the story you want, and Inkfluence makes a full illustrated picture book from it:

  • 110 to 16 story pages (14 by default), each with a few lines of read-aloud text and a full illustration of that moment. Your child is named on the pages, in the words, the way a real picture book names its hero.
  • 2Pictures that follow your description. Curly red hair, round glasses, a yellow raincoat, a black-and-white cat: what you write goes onto a character sheet, and every page is painted from it.
  • 3A painted cover with the title lettered into the art, for example "Theo and the Lighthouse Cat".
  • 4A dedication page at the front and an optional closing page at the back, which can hold a real family photo.
  • 5The files, yours to keep: a square PDF for reading or home printing, an ebook for a tablet, and a print-ready paperback package for Amazon KDP.

The square 8.5 x 8.5 inch shape is the standard for self-published picture books, the size that sits on a lap with a child leaning in. You choose one of eight art styles before you start, from the soft Storybook look to watercolour, coloured pencil, crayon or felt and clay, and the whole book is painted in that style.

An open square paperback picture book on a patchwork quilt. The left page reads: Theo pulled on his yellow raincoat. "Come on, Pepper," he said. "The lighthouse is waiting." The right page is a painted illustration of a curly-haired boy in round glasses and a yellow raincoat running towards a red-and-white lighthouse with a black-and-white cat.
One spread: the child's name in the words, the child's look in the picture, the cat from the description at his side. Staged photo.

How to make a personalized picture book in four steps

No design skills and no drawing. The whole job is typing a good description, then reading what comes back with a critical eye. Most families finish in an evening, edits and dedication included.

  1. 1

Describe your child and the story

Write their name, age and look (hair, skin tone, glasses, favourite clothes), a pet or sibling if you want them in it, and one sentence about what happens. Choose Picture Book, a page count from 10 to 16 and an art style.

  2. 2

    Review the page plan

Before anything is painted you see the page list. Rename, reorder or cut pages until the story goes where you want it.

  3. 3

    Let it write and paint

A character sheet is painted from your description first, then every page gets read-aloud text with your child's name and a picture painted from that sheet, and the cover is painted with the title lettered in.

  4. 4

Add a dedication, fix anything, export

Write a dedication on the opening page, repaint any page that drifts, then read it as a PDF or ebook tonight, or export the KDP package and order a paperback copy.

Behind step 3 is the part that makes a personalised book work: before any page is painted, the book's cast is fixed. Each recurring character (your child, a sibling, a pet, up to four in all) gets a name and one line describing how they look. Those lines become a character sheet showing each of them from the front, from the side and with three expressions, and every page and the cover are painted with that sheet beside them. There is a longer explanation in how consistent characters work in AI children's books, and the help centre has the click-by-click version in how to create an illustrated picture book.

Describe your child: build the idea for their book

Fill in what you like and leave the rest. The idea below updates as you type, in the order that works best: your child's description first, the story last.

Two limits to know. The book's characters are read from the first 500 characters of your idea, so keep looks near the start. And a picture book holds up to 4 recurring characters: your child plus three more (a pet, a sibling, a grandparent).

Your book idea

A personalised picture book for a 5-year-old named Theo, who has dark curly hair, light brown skin and small round glasses and always wears his yellow raincoat, with his black-and-white cat Pepper. Theo and Pepper find a lost seagull chick on the beach and walk it home to the lighthouse before dark. End warmly at bedtime.

Characters in the book: 2 of 4 · Length: 0 of 500

Make this book

The idea opens in your dashboard. If the start screen asks for a format, choose Picture Book; pick 10 to 16 pages and an art style. Write the dedication in the editor afterwards, not in the idea.

Why the builder puts looks first and plot last: the step that fixes the book's characters reads the opening of your idea, and a picture book only has room for one clear problem anyway. A short plot line leaves the story room to surprise you. If you already know the story you want, write it yourself in the dashboard; the builder is only a starting point.

A girl with long black braids, yellow bobbles and purple glasses sits on the stairs at home reading a square paperback titled Amara and the Paper Kite; the girl painted on the cover has the same braids, glasses and red jumper.
Write "long black braids with yellow bobbles and purple glasses" and that is who is on every page. Staged photo.

How to describe your child so the pictures match

The pictures are painted from words, so the words do the work a photo would do elsewhere. These are the details that make the most difference, in the order we would write them:

  • Hair: colour, length and style

"Short blond hair" gives you a blond child. "Blond curls that stick up at the back" gives you your child.

  • Skin tone, in plain words

Light brown, deep brown, pale with freckles, olive. Say it; otherwise you leave it to chance.

  • Glasses, and their colour

Purple round glasses are one of the strongest likeness cues you can give.

  • One outfit they live in

A yellow raincoat, a dinosaur T-shirt, star pyjamas. A signature item makes the character instantly theirs.

  • The pet, with its breed and markings

"A black-and-white cat with one white paw" beats "a cat" on every page.

  • A real place

Their street, a beach you visit, a red front door. One fixed setting line keeps the world consistent.

Two things to avoid. A long list of every family member: the book holds four recurring characters, and a crowded cast makes every page busier. And a full plot written page by page in the idea box: the book plans its own pages, and you get to rename, reorder or cut them before anything is painted.

If you are new to writing for children, the craft side (how picture books are paced, why the problem has to be child-sized, how the ending lands) is covered in how to write a children's book and the picture book planning guide.

Your own story, a template gift book or a photo app?

Three kinds of personalised children's book, and each is the right choice for someone. Prices are ranges seen on sellers' own pages, checked 9 October 2026.

Choose a template gift book if you want a finished, professionally printed book delivered to the door, possibly as a hardcover, gift-wrapped and sent straight to the child, and you are happy with a story written for every child and personalised with a name and an avatar. Shops such as Wonderbly and Hooray Heroes are very good at that, and some, such as Hooray Heroes, say outright that their books are made without AI.

Choose a photo-based app if the most important thing is that the character is drawn from your child's actual face.

Choose to make it yourself here if you want the story to be about your child's real life (the new baby, the lighthouse you visit every summer, the rabbit called Buttons), to change any word or picture, to keep the files, and to print copies at printing cost whenever you want one. For a broader look at the tools, see our comparison of AI children's book creators.

What we do and what we don't

We do

  • Write an original story from your idea, with your child's name in the text.
  • Paint every page and the cover from a character sheet made from your description.
  • Let you edit every word and repaint any page, one at a time.
  • Add a dedication page and a closing page, which can hold your own photo.
  • Export a square PDF, an ebook and a KDP paperback package: interior, full-wrap cover with the spine sized for you, and a READ ME with the settings to pick.
  • Write the story in your family's language.

We don't

  • No photo upload. The character looks like your description, not like a photo.
  • We don't print or ship. You order the printed copy from Amazon KDP, which prints it on demand.
  • Paperback only. The print package is for a KDP paperback; there is no hardcover export.
  • A proof copy carries a Not for Resale band across the cover. A clean author copy needs the book to be live on Amazon.
  • Picture books need a paid plan or credits. The free plan writes a text-only story.
  • Up to 4 recurring characters per book, read from the first 500 characters of your idea.

Add a dedication and a closing page

A dedication is what turns a book into a gift. Picture books have an optional page before the story starts: in the editor it is the opening page (labelled Introduction), and as soon as you type into it, it is switched on and prints in the PDF, the ebook and the KDP package. Change its heading to "Dedication" or to their name, and write your words underneath. An image-only page works too.

A closing page at the back works the same way. This is where a real family photo goes: swap that page's picture for your own photo (a day at the beach, the hospital the day the baby came home), and it prints uncropped. The photo sits on its own page; it does not change how the illustrated character looks.

Ten dedications to borrow or adapt:

  • For Theo, our brave lighthouse keeper. Love, Mum and Dad.
  • For Rosie, who always asks for one more story.
  • To Amara, the best big sister Kofi could ever have.
  • For Leo on his first day. We are so proud of you.
  • For Maya. Goodnight, moon. Goodnight, Maya. Love you to the stars.
  • To Noah and Ella, who find treasure everywhere they look.
  • For Isla, on her fifth birthday, from everyone who loves her.
  • For Sam, who taught us that dinosaurs are always the answer.
  • This book belongs to Zara, and so does our whole heart.
  • For Oliver, written the year you learned to read.

Keep it to one or two lines and add the year: children read their dedication again years later, and the date is the part that makes adults stop. Grandparents writing one have a page of their own with dedication ideas: making a personalized book for a grandchild.

A mother and her red-haired daughter on a yellow sofa hold open a square picture book at its dedication page, a small painting of a sleeping fox above the words For Rosie, who always asks for one more story. Love, Mum and Dad. The girl points at her name.
The dedication is the page children find first. Staged photo.

Edit every word, repaint any picture

The first draft is a draft. Read it aloud once, the way you will at bedtime, and you will hear what to change: a word your child wouldn't use, a joke that should be about the dog, a line that runs too long for a four-year-old. Every page's text is editable in place.

If a picture drifts. The character sheet keeps the look consistent, but a page can still come back with the glasses missing or the raincoat the wrong yellow. Repaint just that page; the others stay as they are. If the whole book is off (say the hair came out straight when you wanted curls), it is quicker to fix the description and make the book again than to repaint every page, because the look is fixed from the description before painting starts.

If the name on the cover is misspelt. The cover title is lettered into the painting, which looks lovely and occasionally gets an unusual name wrong (Aoife, Saoirse, Xanthe). Check the cover letter by letter. If it is wrong, repaint the cover, or set the title in clean type with the cover designer instead.

Then flip through the whole book in the preview before you export. For more on what the illustrations can and can't do, see the AI children's book illustrator page and how Inkfluence keeps a book consistent.

Print a copy: the KDP route, step by step

We don't run a print shop. Instead, the book exports as a print package for Amazon KDP, Amazon's print-on-demand service, which prints a single paperback when you order one. You need a free KDP account. Here is what the package holds:

  • The interior PDF at 8.5 x 8.5 inches, exactly the trim size, with the art kept inside the margins (choose "No bleed" when you upload).
  • A full-wrap cover PDF: back, spine and front in one file, with the spine width worked out from the real page count and the paper you pick.
  • The front cover as a JPG, an EPUB, and a READ ME FIRST file listing the trim, page count, spine width and paper to select on KDP.

The 24-page minimum is handled for you. KDP's 8.5 x 8.5 premium colour paperback needs at least 24 pages. A 14-page story is shorter, so the package adds blank endpapers at the front and back to reach 24, within KDP's limit of 4 blank pages in a row at the start and 10 at the end. You don't need to invent filler pages.

Then you choose how to get your copy. There are two KDP routes, and the difference matters for a gift:

Proof copyAuthor copy
Book must be published? No. Order while it is a private draft, once KDP's print previewer approves itYes. Live (or live with unpublished changes); the option can take 24 hours to appear
Marked?Yes: a "Not for Resale" band and a barcode with no ISBNNo marking
Copies per orderUp to 5Up to 999
CostPrinting cost plus shipping and taxPrinting cost plus shipping and tax
PrivacyNothing publicThe title, with the child's name, is on a public Amazon listing

For a family gift, a proof is usually the practical choice. The band runs across the front cover, spine and back, which matters less to a four-year-old than seeing their own name on the cover. If you want a clean copy, an author copy means publishing the book first, so weigh the public listing before you choose it. Both routes are explained in detail, with Lulu, a copy shop and home printing as alternatives, in how to print one copy of a book.

What printing costs. KDP's printing cost for a premium colour paperback at a large trim (8.5 inches wide counts as large) is $4.20 on Amazon.com for 24 to 40 pages, checked 9 October 2026. Shipping and tax come on top, and proof and author copies don't qualify for free or Prime shipping. You can order from Amazon.com, .ca, .co.uk, .fr, .it, .es, .de or .com.au.

How long it takes. KDP says manufacturing times "fluctuate according to total order volume" and can't be expedited, and it shows the delivery estimate on the last page of checkout. It publishes no holiday cut-off dates. As a rule of thumb, allow about two weeks from order to doorstep in the US. For Christmas, finish the book by late November and order a printed copy by about 1 December for US delivery; allow longer elsewhere and in peak weeks, and check the estimate KDP shows. The Christmas book page has the full calendar.

Uploading for the first time? KDP paperback publishing walks through every screen, the help centre covers exporting the KDP package, and KDP will ask whether the book contains AI-generated content (yes; see KDP's AI disclosure rules).

What one personalized book costs

Here is the arithmetic for one 14-page picture book with one printed copy, in US dollars, as of 9 October 2026:

On a Creator month

Creator plan, one month
$9.99
14 painted pages (allowance is 20)
included
Cover and character sheet
included
KDP printing, 24 pages, premium colour
$4.20
Total before shipping and tax
$14.19

With a credit pack instead

Picture book pages
2 credits each
A 12-page book (24 credits)
25 credits, $12.99
A 14-page book (28 credits)
25 + 15 credits, $22.98
Cover and character sheet
included
Plus KDP printing
$4.20

Each extra printed copy is another $4.20 plus shipping, so a copy for each grandparent costs a few dollars, not another $30 book. For comparison, on the sellers' own pages on 9 October 2026: Wonderbly's personalised books start from $29.99 to $39.99, Hooray Heroes lists books at $59.99 with sale prices of $39.99, and Little Hero Book, a photo-based AI maker, charges $34.99 for a hardcover plus $8 US shipping. Those prices include printing, a finished book at the door and, in some cases, a hardcover, which our route doesn't give you.

The free plan writes a text-only story with your child's name (a PDF with a small credit line), which is a fair way to test whether the story idea works before you pay for pictures. The free children's book generator page explains exactly what it covers, and every plan is on the pricing page. If you plan to sell copies later, the KDP tools work out print cost and royalty for any page count.

A personalized book in your family's language

Many of the families who make these books speak more than one language at home, or have grandparents who read best in another one. The story can be written in the language you choose: write the idea itself in Spanish, French, Polish, Portuguese or Arabic, because the book is written in the language the idea is typed in. The read-aloud text, the title and the dedication are all yours to check and edit.

Two practical tips. Check names with accents or special letters on the painted cover, the same way you would check an unusual spelling (Zoë, Łucja, Seán). And if you want the same book in two languages, read how translation works in the help centre and the AI book translator page before you start, so you know what carries over.

Families with a grandparent abroad will find more on the grandparents page, including sending a copy to another country.

Personalized book ideas by occasion

Each card opens a worked starter idea in the dashboard. Change the names and looks to your family's before you press go.

What age is a personalized picture book for?

Roughly 2 to 8, with the sweet spot from about 3 to 6, when children love hearing their own name and can follow a story with a problem and a turn. Put the age in your idea and the writing is pitched to one of three bands:

Ages 2 to 5

About 5 to 30 words a page

One short line or two per page, rhythm and repetition, a gentle ending. Best for bedtime and toddlers.

Ages 4 to 8

About 15 to 60 words a page

The classic picture book. A real little plot with a problem, tries and a warm turn. The default.

Ages 6 to 10

Longer pages, a short paragraph or two

For confident listeners and early readers who want more story per picture.

For a baby or a one-year-old, a story is less useful than a book of names and things they know: try a name ABC book with their name's letters, or a very short 10-page book of their day. For children of 8 and up who read alone, a picture book can still be a lovely keepsake, but a chapter book with them as the hero may get more use.

Teachers make class versions of the same idea (every child named, a book about this class's year); the teachers page covers that.

Read it tonight, print it later

One honest advantage of making the book yourself: you don't wait for it. A shop book or a photo app's printed book takes one to two weeks to arrive. Your book can be read the evening you make it, as a square PDF on a tablet or laptop, or as an ebook. Many parents read the first version on screen, notice what to change, fix it, and only then order the paperback.

That also rescues a late gift. If a birthday is three days away, read it together on the day from a tablet, and tell them the paperback is on its way. If you need paper sooner, the regular PDF export runs the art edge to edge and prints at home; on a normal Letter or A4 printer that means trimming the pages square and stapling or binding them, which is fine for this week and not a keepsake.

If you want to understand the whole picture-book format before you make one, the eight-minute video walkthrough and the written guide to making a children's picture book with AI cover it end to end. And if a copy for the wider family turns into "maybe other people would buy this", selling a picture book covers print costs and royalties.

Personalized children's book FAQ

How does a personalized children's book maker work?+
You describe your child in a few sentences: their name, age, what they look like, a favourite thing, and the kind of story you want. Inkfluence AI plans a 10 to 16 page picture book from that idea, writes short read-aloud text with your child's name in it, draws a character sheet from your description and paints every page and the cover from that sheet. You can edit any word, repaint any page, add a dedication, then read it as a PDF or ebook or export a print package for Amazon KDP to order a paperback copy.
Can I upload a photo of my child?+
No. There is no photo upload. The pictures follow what you write: hair colour and style, skin tone, glasses, freckles, favourite clothes, a pet's breed. The more specific the description, the closer the illustrated character gets to your child. You can add a real family photo as a page of its own, for example on the last page, by swapping that page's image for your photo in the editor.
Will my child look the same on every page?+
The book keeps the look consistent with a character sheet: your child's description is painted once as a reference (front, side and three expressions), and every page and the cover are painted from it. Most pages match. If one drifts, for example the glasses go missing, repaint just that page in the editor.
How much does a personalised picture book cost to make?+
Illustrated picture books need a paid plan or credits. One Creator month ($9.99) includes 20 painted pages, which covers a 16-page book; the cover and character sheet are included. Without a plan, a book costs 2 credits a page, so a 12-page book is 24 credits and fits the 25-credit pack ($12.99). Printing one 24 to 40 page 8.5 x 8.5 inch premium colour paperback through Amazon KDP costs $4.20 on Amazon.com plus shipping and tax (KDP, checked 9 October 2026).
How long does it take to make a personalised book?+
Writing and painting a picture book takes minutes rather than days, and most people finish theirs, with edits and a dedication, in one evening. You can read it the same night as a PDF or ebook. A printed copy is a separate step: KDP prints and ships proof copies on demand and shows the delivery estimate at checkout; allow about two weeks in the US, longer elsewhere and in December.
Can I print just one copy?+
Yes, through Amazon KDP. A proof copy can be ordered while the book is still a private draft, up to 5 per order, at the printing cost plus shipping, but it carries a Not for Resale band across the cover. An author copy has no band, but the book must be published and live on Amazon first, which makes the listing public. Inkfluence does not print or ship books itself.
What age is a personalised picture book for?+
Picture books suit roughly ages 2 to 8. Inkfluence writes for three bands: ages 2 to 5 (about 5 to 30 words a page), ages 4 to 8 (about 15 to 60 words a page) and ages 6 to 10 (longer pages for confident listeners). Put your child's age in the description and the text is pitched to it.
Can siblings, a pet or a grandparent be in the same book?+
Yes, up to four recurring characters in one book: for example your child, a sibling, the dog and Grandma. Each one gets a name and a look on the character sheet, so they stay consistent. For a fifth person, make a second book, or let them appear without being a main character.
Can I change the story before I print it?+
Yes. You review the page plan before anything is painted, and afterwards every page's text can be rewritten and every picture repainted, one page at a time. You can also change the cover, add a dedication at the front and a closing page at the back, and preview the whole book before you export.
Is the free plan enough to make a personalised book?+
The free plan writes a text-only story with your child's name in it and exports it as a PDF with a small credit line. Illustrated picture books, the EPUB and the KDP print package need a Creator or Premium plan or a credit pack.
Can I make the book in another language?+
Yes. Write the idea in your family's language and the book is written in it, Spanish, French, Polish and Arabic included. Check the name spelling and any accents on the cover after it is painted.
Can I publish it on Amazon or sell it?+
You own the books you make, so you can publish them on Amazon KDP or sell them elsewhere. For a gift starring a real child, most families keep the book private and order a proof copy instead, because publishing makes the title and the child's name visible on a public Amazon listing. KDP asks whether a book contains AI-generated content when you set it up; answer yes.
