KDP Christmas Deadlines 2026: The Last Safe Dates to Publish a Holiday Book (and the 2-a-Week Limit)

The last safe dates to have a Christmas ebook, paperback or hardcover live on Amazon for 25 December 2026, worked out from KDP's own review times, with the new limit of two titles per format a week, Black Friday Countdown Deal rules, UK differences, a countdown planner and a realistic four-week plan from today.

A December 2026 desk calendar with the 9th and 16th circled in red and a star on the 25th, beside a printed proof of an invented picture book called The Lantern Fox by Ada Penrose and a sticky note reading SUBMIT BY 9 DEC.

Quick Answer

To sell through the main Christmas gift weeks, have your book live on Amazon by Tuesday 10 November 2026: submit the ebook, paperback or hardcover to KDP by Thursday 5 November. The last safe dates for Amazon.com are 9 December for a paperback or hardcover and 16 December for a Kindle ebook (7 December for print on Amazon.co.uk). A journal or planner needs KDP's 3 to 4 week low-content review: submit it by 14 November. And KDP now takes only two new titles per format each week, so a holiday range of six paperbacks needs three weeks of slots.

Checked on 28 October 2026. Every KDP rule on this page was read on KDP Help that day, and the links are in Sources. Two kinds of number are ours, not Amazon's, and we label them where they appear: when the main gift-buying window opens (we use 13 November, six weeks before Christmas) and how long printing and delivery take (Amazon publishes no fixed time for either, and had not published its 2026 holiday delivery calendar when we checked). The dates match our KDP publishing calendar, which uses the same rules for every holiday through 2027.

Disclosure: Inkfluence AI is our product. It writes and illustrates books and exports the files KDP asks for, so we have an interest in you making a Christmas book. Everything about KDP below comes from Amazon's own help pages, and where our tool fits we say exactly what it does and costs.

Every year, holiday books go live after the people who would have bought them have finished shopping. On KDP the date that matters is not 25 December. It is the day you submit, the day review ends, the day the book shows in search, and the day a reader can still order a printed copy and have it arrive. In 2026 there is one more: KDP's weekly limit, which since 21 September allows two new titles per format a week. This guide counts back through each step.

The KDP Christmas 2026 dates at a glance

The first date column keeps the book selling through the whole season. The second is the last date a book can go in and still reach a reader by Christmas Day. Treat that one as an emergency exit: a book live on 14 December has ten days to be found and no reviews.

Two promotional dates sit in the middle: Black Friday is 27 November 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving on 26 November, and Cyber Monday is 30 November. If you want a Kindle Countdown Deal on those days, the deadline is today or close to it, for reasons explained in the Black Friday section.

Timeline infographic titled KDP Christmas 2026: the dates that matter, with markers for 28 Oct enrol in KDP Select for a Black Friday Countdown Deal, 5 Nov submit ebook, paperback or hardcover for the main gift window, 10 Nov be live on Amazon, 14 Nov last day to submit a journal or planner, 27 Nov Black Friday, 30 Nov Cyber Monday, 9 Dec last paperback or hardcover submit (US), 16 Dec last Kindle ebook submit and 25 Dec Christmas Day.
Every date on this timeline is the one used in the tables and the planner on this page, for Amazon.com and an account that has published before.

How the dates are worked out

A KDP deadline is a chain of waits, counted backwards from the day a reader needs the book.

1. When readers buy (our estimate)

Gift buyers start browsing in mid-November. We put the opening of the main gift window at six weeks before Christmas, Friday 13 November 2026. That estimate is ours, not Amazon's, and our KDP publishing calendar uses the same one. Authors feel it too: on our platform, Christmas books made per 10,000 nearly doubled in early October compared with the spring and summer (the calendar page has the chart).

2. Showing up in search: up to 72 hours

KDP Help gives ebooks up to 72 hours after going live to appear in search. We apply the same three days to print books. So to be in search on 13 November, be live by Tuesday 10 November.

3. KDP review: 72 hours, 5 days, 6 days or 4 weeks

KDP's timelines page gives these review times, and the book sits in "In Review" while they run:

  • Ebooks: up to 72 hours for the detail page to appear.
  • Paperbacks and hardcovers: up to 72 hours for Amazon.com, and up to 5 days for other marketplaces.
  • Accounts without a previously published book: publishing may take up to 6 days (stated in the print section).
  • Low-content books such as notebooks, journals, planners and log books: reviews may take 3 to 4 weeks.

We count 72 hours as three business days, matching KDP's "3 business days" guidance, so a Thursday 5 November submission lands on Tuesday 10 November. KDP will not expedite a review, and if a review flags a problem the clock restarts when you resubmit: the best reason not to aim at the last safe date. Our guide to why KDP rejects books lists the common causes.

4. Printing and delivery to the reader (our allowance)

KDP print books are printed on demand after each order. Amazon publishes no fixed printing time, and had not published its 2026 holiday delivery calendar when we checked on 28 October. We allow 10 days between a reader's order and 25 December, so a print book must be searchable by about 12 December and submitted by 9 December. Once the season starts, check the order-by date Amazon shows on your own book's page.

5. Your printed proof (our allowance)

A proof shows the book as a reader will see it: colour, trim, spine, art near the edge. KDP emails the order link within 4 hours, you have 24 hours to buy, up to five proofs at a time, with no free or Prime shipping. Printing cannot be expedited and KDP gives no fixed time; checkout shows an estimate for your address. We allow 14 days. For the main window that meant ordering by 22 October, so starting today you either skip the proof to submit by 5 November, or submit after it arrives and launch in mid-November. The four-week plan below does the second.

The two-a-week limit and what it means for a holiday range

On 21 September 2026 KDP cut the number of new titles an account can publish from ten a week to two per format, as the Alliance of Independent Authors reported on 24 September. KDP's help page on publishing limits now describes two separate limits:

  • Creation limit: up to 2 titles per book format each week.
  • Submission limit: up to 2 new titles per book format each week, counted the first time you submit a title for publication, including titles you saved as drafts earlier.
  • The two limits are separate, and they apply separately to ebook, paperback and hardcover. So in one week you could submit two ebooks, two paperbacks and two hardcovers.
  • Updates to titles you have already submitted do not count.
  • Both reset every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. In US time zones that is Saturday afternoon or evening, and in the UK it is midnight on Saturday night.
Infographic titled KDP weekly limit: 2 new titles per format, with three cards for ebook, paperback and hardcover each showing 2 per week, the lines Resets every Sunday at 00:00 UTC and Drafts count toward a separate creation limit of 2. Updates do not count, and a band reading 28 Oct to 9 Dec spans 7 limit weeks = up to 14 new paperbacks.
The limit counts each format separately. Between today and the last safe paperback date there are seven limit weeks, the current one included.

A range needs weeks. One book as an ebook and a paperback is easy, because each format has its own allowance. Six coloring book paperbacks need three weeks. For the main window (5 November) only this week (25 to 31 October) and the week of 1 November remain: four paperbacks at most. For the last safe date (9 December), seven weeks remain: up to fourteen.

Drafts count. A paperback draft uses a creation slot even if you never publish it, and a printed proof needs a draft. Create each book in the week you mean to submit it.

Updates are free. Fixing a typo, replacing a cover or changing a price on a submitted book does not touch the limit, so "submit early, fix after the proof" works well for a range.

Christmas countdown planner

Pick formats, marketplace and today's date. The planner counts back from 25 December to the main-window and last-safe dates for each format, then spreads your titles over the weekly limit from the first week they can be ready. Our own allowances are labelled under the results.

Formats

Week-by-week submission plan

KDP rules from KDP Help, read 28 Oct 2026: ebook and Amazon.com print review up to 72 hours (counted as 3 business days); print on other marketplaces up to 5 days; first book on an account up to 6 days; low-content up to 4 weeks; search up to 72 hours after live; 2 new titles per format per week, reset Sunday 00:00 UTC. Our allowances, not Amazon's: the main gift window opens 13 Nov; print orders need 10 days to arrive by 25 Dec and ebooks 1 day; a printed proof takes 14 days; making and checking a book takes 4 days.

Start my Christmas book

A typical result: one picture book as ebook and paperback, US, starting today with a proof. The ebook is ready from 1 November and makes the main window; the paperback is ready from 15 November and lands in the purple band, submit by 21 November. Untick the proof and both make the main window. That trade is the main decision for anyone starting a print book now.

Make the book before you plan the slots

Inkfluence AI writes and illustrates a Christmas picture book, coloring book or story in one run, and exports the KDP package: the print PDF, the full-wrap cover, the Kindle EPUB and a READ ME with your trim, spine and paper settings.

Pre-orders and scheduled release dates

Ebook pre-orders

KDP pre-orders are for ebooks only. Pre-orders created on or after 2 September 2026 can have a release date up to 18 months ahead (12 months before that). The final manuscript is due at least 72 hours before release; miss it and the pre-order and customers' orders are cancelled, and KDP may remove your pre-order privileges. You can move the date earlier once the final file has been reviewed.

For Christmas a pre-order helps in one case: the cover and description are ready but the book will not be until late November. A pre-order with a 1 December release can collect orders through Black Friday. Only set a date you are sure of.

Print release dates

Print books cannot be pre-ordered. A paperback or hardcover can instead have a scheduled release 5 to 90 days ahead; from five days before, you cannot change the file, details or date, or order author copies. Low-content and public domain books are not eligible. Nobody can buy the paperback early, and it uses a slot in the week you submit. For a book being finished now, publish the paperback as soon as it passes your proof.

Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Countdown Deals

Black Friday 2026 is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. A short deal on a backlist book can lift a new Christmas title alongside it, within KDP's rules.

Kindle Countdown Deals

A Countdown Deal lowers an ebook's price for a set time with a countdown clock on the product page, and keeps your royalty rate at the lower price (70% stays 70% even below $2.99). The KDP Help rules:

  • The ebook must have been enrolled in KDP Select for at least 30 days.
  • Its digital list price must be unchanged for 30 days before the deal and 14 days after.
  • List price $2.99 to $24.99 on Amazon.com, or £1.99 to £15.99 on Amazon.co.uk including VAT, with a cut of at least $1.00 or £1.00.
  • A deal runs from 1 hour to 7 days, with up to 5 price steps.
  • One Countdown Deal per KDP Select term, ending at least 14 days before the term ends. In each 90-day term you can run either a Countdown Deal or a Free Book Promotion.
  • Only on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, and set up at least 24 hours before it starts.

Count back from Black Friday: a deal starting 27 November needs an ebook that was in KDP Select by 28 October, today, with its price left alone from then on. For a deal starting on Cyber Monday, enrol by 31 October. That means a new Christmas ebook published in November cannot have a Countdown Deal on Black Friday. It can run one in December once it has 30 days in KDP Select, provided you have not changed its price.

Free Book Promotions

The alternative: up to 5 free days in each 90-day KDP Select term, used together or separately, with no roll-over. A free promotion on last year's Christmas book in Black Friday week can bring readers to this year's. You get a free promotion or a Countdown Deal in a term, not both.

KDP Select and Kindle+

KDP Select puts your ebook in Kindle+ (called Kindle Unlimited until 22 October 2026) in exchange for selling the ebook only on Amazon in 90-day terms. Our Kindle+ guide for authors covers October's changes, and KDP Select vs going wide weighs exclusivity against selling on other stores.

Print prices

There are no Countdown Deals for print. To discount a paperback, change its list price yourself a few days ahead; it is an update, so it uses no weekly slot. Check the royalty at the lower price with our KDP royalty calculator first: a color picture book has little margin to give.

Ebooks as gifts: the last-minute format

Print stops being a Christmas option somewhere in mid-December. Ebooks do not, because they can be given. On Amazon.com, a Kindle book's product page has a "Buy for others" option: the buyer enters the recipient's email address, adds an optional message, and chooses the date the gift email is delivered. The recipient does not need a Kindle device; the free Kindle app works. SlashGear's walkthrough also notes the recipient has to be in the same country as the buyer. Check the option on your own book's page once it is live, since Amazon changes its pages without notice.

So the ebook keeps selling as a gift up to Christmas Eve, and a scheduled gift email can arrive on Christmas morning. In the last week, promote the ebook ("send it by email for Christmas morning"), not a paperback that can no longer arrive. A picture book makes a weaker ebook than a story or cookbook, because fixed pages shrink on a phone; see how to format a book for Kindle.

US and UK differences

  • Review time for print. KDP gives print books up to 72 hours on Amazon.com and up to 5 days on other marketplaces, Amazon.co.uk included. We count the UK as 5 calendar days, which moves the last safe paperback date from Wednesday 9 December to Monday 7 December. The main-window date stays Thursday 5 November.
  • Ebooks. KDP's ebook timeline does not vary by marketplace, so the ebook dates are the same.
  • Countdown Deals run on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk only, with UK prices of £1.99 to £15.99 including VAT and a cut of at least £1.00.

Publishing to every marketplace? Plan to the slowest one you care about: the 5-day print rule covers all the other Amazon stores.

Holiday books that fit the timeline

The kind of book decides which deadline you are working to. Four types do well as Christmas gifts.

Overhead photo of four invented Christmas books on a walnut table with pine sprigs: a square picture book called The Lantern Fox, a coloring book called Cozy Christmas Village Coloring Book, a cookbook called Twelve Days of Cookies and a journal called Advent Gratitude Journal.
Four holiday formats with four different timelines. The titles are invented for this page.

Christmas picture books

The classic gift, with the longest print checklist: full color, bleed, a square trim. KDP hardcovers come in five trim sizes (5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9, 6.14 x 9.21, 7 x 10 and 8.25 x 11 inches) with 75 to 550 pages, so a 24 to 40 page picture book is a paperback and an ebook. A book starring a named child cannot be bought in a shop; our personalized Christmas book for kids page shows how one is made and what a single printed copy costs, and books for grandparents covers the other side of the family. For the craft, read how to make a children's picture book with AI, self-publishing a children's book on Amazon, the picture book bleed sizes and consistent characters.

Christmas coloring books

Good for ranges, which is where the weekly limit bites. KDP lists coloring and puzzle books as "Not Generally Low-Content", so they get the normal 72-hour review. Kids' books with bold shapes and adult books of detailed winter scenes have different buyers; our Christmas coloring book generator covers which to make, and the bold and easy and cozy pages show the two styles. Coloring book niches and selling AI coloring books on KDP cover demand and rules.

Christmas cookbooks

Baking books sell as gifts and get used in December. They follow the 72-hour review and work well as ebooks, which keeps them giftable after print stops arriving. Start from our AI cookbook generator or writing a cookbook with AI, and test every recipe.

Journals and planners

The slowest to publish: KDP treats notebooks, journals, planners and log books as low-content, with reviews of 3 to 4 weeks, no release date and no Expanded Distribution. The last safe Christmas submission is 14 November, but a 2027 planner keeps selling into January. See the low-content books guide. A guided journal with real written prompts (our AI journal generator, or how to create a guided journal) may be reviewed as a regular book; KDP decides.

Pick the format that still fits

Today there is time for an ebook and a paperback picture book, coloring book or cookbook before the main window, if you start this week. Inkfluence AI makes the whole book from your idea, then you check it, export it and submit.

A realistic four-week plan from 28 October

This is the plan we would follow to get one Christmas picture book (or coloring book, or cookbook) live as an ebook and a paperback on Amazon.com before Black Friday. It includes the printed proof, because a color problem found by a customer in December costs more than a week. Skip the proof and the paperback moves into week 2 with the ebook.

Week 1: Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October. Make it.

  • Day 1. Write the idea in a paragraph: the reader's age, the setting, the one Christmas thing that happens. In Inkfluence AI choose a picture book (10 to 16 pages, default 14), a coloring book (12 to 40 pages) or a regular book. You review the page plan before the pictures are painted, with the same characters on every page.
  • Days 2 and 3. Read every page aloud, rewrite any line, repaint any picture you do not like, and get the cover right (the cover and character sheet come with the book).
  • Day 4 (Saturday 31 October). Export the KDP package: the interior PDF at 8.5 x 8.5 inches with bleed, padded to KDP's 24-page minimum; the full-wrap cover sized for your page count; the Kindle cover and EPUB; and a READ ME FIRST with the trim, paper and bleed settings. The KDP export help article says which file goes in which box. Create the paperback and the ebook in KDP, upload, and request a printed proof.
A woman with short grey hair in a green cardigan checks a printed proof of an invented book called Snowfall Cottage Coloring Book at her kitchen table beside an opened shipping box, with sticky notes reading trim ok and check spine.
The proof is where trim, spine and color problems show up. Order it in week 1 and check it the day it arrives. The book is invented for this page.

Week 2: Sunday 1 November to Saturday 7 November. Publish the ebook.

  • Fill in the details: title exactly as on the cover, description, keywords, categories, age range, and KDP's AI content questions (our KDP AI disclosure guide explains them; KDP SEO covers keywords). Keep trademarked characters and brand names out of the book and the metadata.
  • Submit the ebook by Thursday 5 November: live by 10 November, in search by 13 November.
  • Decide on KDP Select. Enrolled on 5 November, the ebook's first Countdown Deal can start on 5 December.
  • If the proof's delivery estimate is after 15 November, consider submitting the paperback without it and ordering an author copy once it is live.

Week 3: Sunday 8 to Saturday 14 November. Check the proof, submit the paperback.

  • Check the proof in daylight: colors, words near the trim or gutter, spine text centred, barcode area clear. Fix anything in Inkfluence AI, export again, replace the files.
  • Submit the paperback by Saturday 14 November. With a 72-hour review it should be live around 18 to 19 November, ahead of every Christmas print order.
  • Once both are live, check the ebook and paperback share one product page; KDP Help explains how to ask for them to be linked if not.

Week 4: Sunday 15 to Wednesday 25 November. Make it findable.

  • Add A+ Content under the description with our A+ content generator; it is reviewed separately, so submit it early.
  • Order author copies to give yourself in November, not December: no free or Prime shipping, and no faster printing.
  • Plan Black Friday: a free promotion on an older KDP Select book, or a paperback price change made a few days ahead.
  • Tell people: your email list, a parents' group, a school fair flyer.

That uses one slot per format. For three or four titles, run the cycle in parallel, two per format per week, and check the planner. Our ebook launch checklist covers the rest of a launch.

If you miss the dates

  1. Paperback late, ebook on time. Publish the ebook first and the paperback when ready, up to 9 December (US), and lead with the ebook in your marketing.
  2. Print too late. A Kindle ebook can still go in up to 16 December and be gifted by email up to Christmas Eve.
  3. KDP too late. Sell a printable PDF: Etsy and Gumroad downloads need no store review and arrive as soon as the buyer pays. Inkfluence AI publishes to Etsy and Gumroad on paid plans; Etsy vs Gumroad compares them.
  4. Christmas too late. Make it a New Year book, or publish in September 2027 with a season of reviews before December. The publishing calendar has the 2027 dates.

Whatever the date, a rejection in December can cost the season, so check the print settings against the READ ME, export the cover again if the page count changes, and finish tax and payment details before a first book. Our guide to self-publishing on Amazon KDP walks through every screen, and paperback publishing on KDP covers print settings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last day to publish a Christmas book on KDP in 2026?

For buyers on Amazon.com, submit a paperback or hardcover by Wednesday 9 December and a Kindle ebook by Wednesday 16 December. Those are the last safe dates, not the best ones: to catch the main gift-buying weeks, have any format live by Tuesday 10 November, which means submitting by Thursday 5 November. A journal or planner needs KDP's longer low-content review, so submit it by 14 November.

When should I submit a Christmas paperback to KDP?

By Thursday 5 November 2026 to be live and in search for the main gift window, which we put at about six weeks before Christmas. If it is your first print book on the account, a day earlier. After that, a paperback submitted by 9 December (US) or 7 December (UK) can still be printed and delivered for the last orders, but it has missed most of the season.

How long does KDP take to review a book before Christmas?

KDP Help says up to 72 hours for an ebook and for a print book on Amazon.com, up to 5 days for print on other marketplaces such as Amazon.co.uk, up to 6 days for an account with no published book, and 3 to 4 weeks for low-content books like journals. Then allow up to 72 hours for the book to show in search. KDP support does not speed up reviews, in December or any other month.

How many books can I publish on KDP per week?

Two new titles per format per week, counted when you first submit, and separately two titles created per format, drafts included. Ebook, paperback and hardcover each have their own two. Updates to books you have already submitted do not count. The limits reset every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. The limit was ten until 21 September 2026.

Can I put a Christmas paperback on pre-order?

No. KDP offers pre-orders for ebooks only. A paperback or hardcover can have a scheduled release date 5 to 90 days ahead, but it cannot be ordered before that date, and from five days before release you cannot change the file, details or date, or order author copies. Low-content books cannot use a release date at all.

Can I run a Kindle Countdown Deal on Black Friday 2026?

Only if the ebook has been in KDP Select for at least 30 days when the deal starts and its price has not changed for the 30 days before. For a deal starting Friday 27 November, that means enrolled by 28 October with the price left alone since then. Deals run on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, for 1 hour to 7 days, one per 90-day KDP Select term, and must be set up at least 24 hours ahead.

Can people give a Kindle ebook as a Christmas gift?

Yes. On Amazon.com, Kindle book pages have a "Buy for others" option: the buyer enters the recipient's email address, adds a note and picks the day the gift email arrives, and the recipient reads it in the free Kindle app or on a Kindle. That makes an ebook the one format someone can still buy for Christmas morning. Check the option on your own book's page once it is live.

Is my first KDP book slower to publish?

For print, it can be. KDP Help says publishing may take up to 6 days for an account without a previously published book. Our planner moves a first print book's dates back to match: submit by 4 November for the main window and by 6 December for the last orders. Finishing your tax and bank details before you submit avoids a separate hold-up.

Are the KDP Christmas dates different in the UK?

Mostly the same, with one change: KDP allows up to 5 days for print books on marketplaces other than Amazon.com, so the last safe paperback date for Amazon.co.uk is Monday 7 December instead of 9 December. Ebook dates match. Countdown Deals on Amazon.co.uk need a list price of £1.99 to £15.99 including VAT.

What if I miss the KDP Christmas deadline?

Switch format. A Kindle ebook can still go in up to 16 December, and an ebook can be gifted by email. After that, a printable PDF sold on Etsy or Gumroad needs no store review and downloads the moment someone pays. Or publish for New Year and next Christmas instead: a book that is live in September 2027 has a season of reviews behind it before December.
