A woman in a rust jumper drinks coffee at a kitchen table while reading a laptop report headed Monthly royalties: June $41.20, July $38.65, August $52.10, September $47.35, with five of her paperbacks by Clare Winslow on a wall shelf behind her

Quick Answer

Most KDP authors make little, and a minority make a living. In the largest recent survey of indie authors (Written Word Media, 1,346 authors, 2 Dec 2025), 44% earned $100 a month or less, 20% earned $500 to $5,000, 13% earned over $5,000 and 8% over $10,000. About 80% of authors with one to three books earned under $100 a month; the median with 25 or more books was about $3,000. Authors with an email list earned a median of about $300 a month, against $15 without one.

"How much do KDP authors make?" has two honest answers, and most pages give only the exciting one. Some self-published authors earn more than a salary from Amazon. Most earn the price of a takeaway a month. The difference is not luck or the tool they wrote with: it is mostly how many books they have, whether those books form a series, and whether readers can be told when the next one is out.

This guide puts the real numbers in one place. The income figures come from the Written Word Media 2025 Indie Author Survey, read on its own page on 19 Oct 2026, and every royalty rule from KDP's help pages, read the same day. The per-copy figures are computed the same way as our how many books calculator, so the two pages always agree. Where a number is self-reported or estimated, we say so. If you want the royalty rules themselves rather than what authors earn from them, our KDP royalties guide covers every rate and threshold.

How much KDP authors make: the survey numbers

Amazon does not publish what authors earn. The most useful public picture is the Written Word Media 2025 Indie Author Survey, published on 2 December 2025. It had 1,346 responses from authors around the world, and Amazon was the top revenue source for 83% of them, so it is close to a survey of KDP authors. Its own caveat matters: "all data is self-reported, especially income." The figures are monthly income from writing, before marketing costs.

Source: Written Word Media, 2025 Indie Author Survey (1,346 responses, self-reported, published 2 Dec 2025), read 19 Oct 2026. The survey does not publish a figure for the $100 to $500 band or for authors with 10 to 24 books, so neither appears here.

Three readings of that table hold up well.

  • The typical outcome is small. The single largest group earns $100 a month or less. For a new author with one to three books, that is the expected result four times out of five.
  • Earning a living is real but uncommon. One author in eight reported more than $5,000 a month, and one in twelve more than $10,000.
  • Income tracks the catalogue, steeply. Five to nine books bring a median of about $50 a month; 25 or more bring about $3,000. That is roughly four times the books for sixty times the money, which tells you the big catalogues are doing something other than simply having more books. We come back to what in what changes the number.

Two limits keep the table honest. First, people who answer an author survey are likely more committed than the average person with a KDP account, so the real share of accounts earning little is probably higher than 44%. Second, this is gross income. The same survey found authors spend an average of $636 a month on marketing, so the money an author keeps is lower, sometimes much lower. Our self-publishing statistics page gathers these and other industry figures with their sources.

What one copy earns in 2026, by format

Income is copies times royalty, so the second half of the answer is what each copy pays. KDP changed two of the rules that most income pages still get wrong: the 70% ebook band now runs to $12.99 on Amazon.com (from 7 July 2026), and paperbacks only get 60% at $9.99 and up. These are Amazon.com figures in US dollars, checked on KDP's help pages on 19 Oct 2026.

Ebook: 70% royalty applies from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com and is 70% of the list price minus delivery at $0.15 per MB (KDP's stated average is $0.06 a copy); 35% outside the band, with no delivery charge. Paperback: (royalty rate x list price) minus printing; 60% at $9.99 and up, 50% at $9.98 and below; Expanded Distribution 40%. Printing on Amazon.com: black ink $2.30 flat up to 110 pages at a regular trim ($2.84 large), then $1.00 + $0.012 a page ($0.017 large); premium colour $3.60 flat for 24 to 40 pages ($4.20 large). Large trim = wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in. Sources: KDP help pages G200634560, G200634500, G200644210, G201834330, G201834340, read 19 Oct 2026.

Four things in that table do most of the work in any income estimate:

  • A cheap paperback earns about a dollar. Coloring books and journals are usually priced under $9.99, so they take the 50% rate and then lose printing. That is why a low-content catalogue needs so many more sales for the same income.
  • One cent can be worth a dollar. The 150-page guide earns $2.19 at $9.98 and $3.19 at $9.99.
  • Ebooks pay the most per copy at normal prices. No printing, and 70% from $2.99. At $12.99 a long non-fiction book or a box set now earns $9.05, where the old ceiling of $9.99 gave $6.95.
  • Pricing past $12.99 drops you to 35%. A $13.99 ebook earns $4.90, less than the same book at $7.99.

Kindle Unlimited. Books enrolled in KDP Select are also paid for pages read in Kindle Unlimited. KDP does not publish a per-page rate; it publishes the total paid to KDP Select authors, which was $69.3 million for September 2026. Third-party trackers estimate a rate each month, which our royalties guide covers. In the survey, Kindle Unlimited money is already inside the income figures, so you do not need to add it on top of them.

For a single sale on any store, the royalty calculator compares KDP with other platforms, and the KDP trim sizes guide shows how the trim moves printing cost.

Why most books earn little

Put the survey and the per-copy table together and you can work out roughly how many copies a typical book sells. The median author with five to nine books earns about $50 a month. Seven books is the middle of that band, so that is about $7.14 a book a month, or about two copies of a $4.99 ebook. The how many books calculator uses the same reasoning for its three sales levels (2, 10 and 35 copies a book a month), and its method section shows each step. Two copies a month is not a failure. It is the middle.

Copies come from being found, and most books are not found

A KDP listing does not sell itself. Amazon shows a book to shoppers when it is already selling, when it matches a search well, or when the author pays for ads. A new book from an unknown author has none of those yet. Without readers who already know the author, an email list, or a reason for Amazon to recommend it, it sits on page nine of a search and sells a copy when someone stumbles on it. This is the plain reason most first books earn little, and it does not change with how fast the book was written.

The money is gross, and spending rises with income

The survey's marketing figures show how the top earners got there. Authors earning under $100 a month spent about $81 a month on marketing on average; those earning $1,000 to $5,000 spent about $478; those earning over $10,000 spent about $4,500. Big earners are, in the survey's words, "typically reinvesting thousands of dollars each month into marketing." Their income is real, but some of it pays for the next month's readers. When you see a screenshot of a high royalty month, the ad bill is rarely in the picture.

The catalogue curve is not just more books

It is tempting to read "25 books, $3,000 a month" as "write 25 books and earn $3,000." The survey points elsewhere. Authors with 25 or more books have usually been at it for years, write in a series, have a list of readers, and know what their genre's readers buy. More books by themselves do not make each book sell more. Twenty-five unconnected books with no readers behind them are much more likely to look like twenty-five copies of the typical book: about two sales a month each.

What your catalogue earns: estimator

This estimator runs the arithmetic forwards: books times copies per book times royalty per copy. Pick a format and price, enter how many books you have or plan, and choose a sales level. The three levels are the same ones the how many books calculator uses, derived from the survey. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere. To go the other way, from an income target to the number of books, use the how many books calculator.

Paperback royalty = 60% x price at $9.99 and up, 50% at $9.98 and below, minus the printing cost for the book shown. Sales levels from the Written Word Media 2025 Indie Author Survey (self-reported): typical = about $50 a month from 5 to 9 books; better than most = $100 from 3 books, above about 80% of authors with 1 to 3 books; established = about $3,000 a month median at 25+ books. Copies include Kindle Unlimited reads. An estimate, not a forecast.

    What changes the number

If copies per book is the lever, what moves it? The survey, KDP's own rules and the arithmetic above point to six things. None is a secret, and none is fast.

    1. Catalogue size, slowly

More books give readers more to buy once they find you, and give Amazon more chances to show you. The survey's curve is the evidence: about $50 a month at five to nine books, a "steeper income ramp" from ten, and about $3,000 a month at 25 or more. But the ramp comes with years of practice and the other five items on this list. The KDP publishing calendar helps you place each new book where demand already is, such as before Christmas or back to school.

    2. A series

A reader who finishes book one of a series and likes it is the easiest sale an author will ever make. The survey says authors earning $1,000 or more a month almost always have "more books (often 10+, and very often series)" and notes that with a series, marketing spend "gets amortized across the whole series": one ad for book one sells books two to seven as well. This is why fiction authors with modest single titles can still earn well across a series. If you are writing fiction, our book series writer keeps characters and events consistent from book to book.

    3. An email list

Of all the survey's findings, this is the starkest: authors with an email list earned a median of about $300 a month, authors without one about $15. The survey adds that top earners do more than have a list: they actively build it and email it. A list turns each launch from a cold start into a message to people who already bought from you. A free short book or chapter offered at the back of your books is the usual way to start one; a lead magnet generator can produce one.

    4. Genre

Romance authors were 21% of survey respondents but about 44% of the group earning over $10,000 a month. Cozy mystery authors appeared more often in every income bracket above $500, and paranormal romance had one of the strongest links with high income. These genres share fast-reading, series-loving readers, many of them in Kindle Unlimited. If you write romance, our guide on how to sell romance novels covers what those readers expect.

    5. Price and format

The per-copy table shows how much price moves income without a single extra sale. A coloring book at $9.99 instead of $7.99 earns $3.15 instead of $1.16. An ebook at $12.99 instead of $9.99 earns $9.05 instead of $6.95, now that the 70% band reaches $12.99. Adding a paperback to an ebook adds a second product to the same listing at no extra writing cost. Higher prices can mean fewer copies, so change one thing at a time and watch the next month. Our ebook pricing guide shows what books in each genre charge.

    6. Marketing, ads and KDP Select

The survey's spending figures rise with every income band, from about $81 a month under $100 to about $4,500 over $10,000, and it is frank that ad platforms are "hard to optimize, time-consuming and it's easy to overspend on without clear ROI." In our experience, ads amplify a book whose cover, description and opening already persuade readers; they do not fix one that does not. On KDP Select, 38% of authors had all their books enrolled and 30% had none, while 43% of authors earning over $5,000 a month had all their books in Select. Either route can work; the survey suggests exclusivity is more common at the top, not that it causes it. Our KDP SEO guide covers the free side of being found: titles, keywords and categories.

Spend your time on the parts that sell books

Series, a reader list and a sharp listing are where income comes from. Inkfluence AI handles the drafting, the formatting and the KDP files, so more of your week goes on those. Fiction books keep a story bible across chapters, and a finished book can continue as a series.

The 2026 rule changes that broke older income articles

Most income articles you will find were written before two KDP changes this year. If a page does not mention them, its arithmetic is out of date.

    • The 70% ebook band now reaches $12.99 (effective 7 July 2026). KDP's list price page states it plainly: "Effective July 7, 2026, the 70% royalty option price band is $2.99-$12.99 on Amazon.com." Before, it stopped at $9.99. Any page that says a $10.99 or $12.99 ebook earns 35% is now wrong for Amazon.com.
    • Two new titles per format per week (since 21 September 2026). KDP's limits page says you can submit "Up to 2 new titles per book format each week" and create up to two titles per format a week, with drafts counting, updates not counting, and a reset "every Sunday at 12:00 AM Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)". The page gives no start date; the Alliance of Independent Authors reported on 24 September 2026 that it took effect on Monday 21 September, down from ten. At most that is about 104 new titles a year per format. Plans built on publishing fifty books in a month are no longer possible, whatever the tool.
    • Paperback royalty is two rates, not one. Not new this year, but still missed: 60% applies only at $9.99 and above on Amazon.com, and 50% at $9.98 and below. Pages that quote a flat 60% overstate what most coloring books and journals earn by about two dollars a copy.

The how many books calculator applies all three when it works out how long a catalogue takes, and the publishing calendar plans the weekly slots around seasonal dates. Whether those changes leave KDP worth the effort for your kind of book is weighed in is KDP worth it in 2026.

    Three authors, worked through

These three people are invented, to show the arithmetic on realistic catalogues. The sales rates are the survey-based levels from the estimator above, not predictions for any real book.

Illustration 1: Emma, three standalone novels, Kindle ebooks at $4.99

Each copy earns $3.45 (70% of $4.99 minus $0.06). If her books sell like the typical book, two copies a month each: 3 x 2 x $3.45 = $20.70 a month, $248.40 a year. If they do better than four in five new authors, ten copies each: 3 x 10 x $3.45 = $103.50 a month. Either way Emma is in or near the 44% earning $100 or less. The fastest change available to her is not a fourth unrelated novel but making the next book the first of a series and adding a sign-up link at the back of all three.

    Illustration 2: Tom, forty coloring books, 8.5 x 11 in, 104 pages

At $7.99 each copy earns $1.16 (50% of $7.99 minus $2.84 printing). Two copies a book a month: 40 x 2 x $1.16 = $92.80 a month, $1,113.60 a year, from forty books. Under the weekly limit, forty new paperbacks take at least 20 weeks to publish. The same books at $9.99 earn $3.15 a copy: 40 x 2 x $3.15 = $252.00 a month, if they still sell two copies. Coloring books cannot use Expanded Distribution, so every sale comes from Amazon. Tom's best levers are price, fewer and better-themed books, and timing them to seasons; our coloring book niches guide and how to sell coloring books cover both.

Illustration 3: Rosa, a 26-book romance catalogue in three series, with an email list

At the established rate, 35 copies a book a month at $4.99 (copies include Kindle Unlimited reads): 26 x 35 x $3.45 = $3,139.50 a month, $37,674 a year. That is close to the survey's median for authors with 25 or more books. Authors in the $1,000 to $5,000 band spent about $478 a month on marketing on average, which would leave Rosa about $2,661.50 before tax, covers and editing. Rosa did not get here by having 26 books; she got here by building series readers over years, and the books are how she serves them.

Across the three, the per-copy royalty varies by about three times; copies per book vary by over seventeen times. That is the whole argument of this guide in two numbers.

Our data: most books are not made for KDP

We can add one first-party number of our own. Of 9,408 export events on Inkfluence AI from 1 October 2026 to 19 October 2026, the KDP package was 9.9% (934) and PDF 70.1% (6,596). Word files were 10.3% (973) and EPUB 9.6% (905). The KDP exports came from 156 different authors, against 3,582 for PDF.

KDP package (print interior and cover)9349.9%156
    EPUB9059.6%149
    Total9,408100%

Read plainly: most people who make a book with us want a file to read, print, share or sell directly, and a minority package it for Amazon. That fits the survey. KDP is one route to readers, not the default end of making a book, and the authors who do best on it treat it as a business with a catalogue, series and a list rather than a single upload.

Method. Counted early on 19 October 2026 (UTC) from Inkfluence AI's export log, our three test accounts excluded; aggregates only, no individual books or authors. An export event is one download from the export window: a PDF, a Word file, an EPUB, or the KDP package (a zip with the print-ready interior PDF and the cover). The window runs from 1 October 2026 to the count. One author exporting the same book twice counts as two events; author counts are distinct authors per format, and one author can appear in several formats. PDF export is available on the free plan and the other formats on paid plans or credits, which raises PDF's share. This is a different window from our earlier export study, so the shares differ from it. Free to cite with a link to this page.

    Selling outside Amazon

If most of the people making books do not upload them to KDP, where do they go? Many go to readers directly: a PDF to a client list, a workbook sold from a website, a printable pack on a marketplace. Selling direct changes both halves of the income sum. You set the price and keep more of each sale than a low-priced paperback earns on KDP, there is no printing cost on a digital download, and there is no weekly title limit. The trade-off is that Amazon's shoppers are not there: you bring more of the buyers yourself.

This suits some books much better than others. Printables, planners, workbooks, coloring pages and short practical guides sell well as instant downloads; long novels mostly sell on Amazon. Our digital product ideas page lists what sells as a download, and the guides to selling ebooks on Etsy and selling ebooks on Gumroad cover each store's fees and setup. For the two stores side by side, see Etsy vs Gumroad for ebook sellers, and for Amazon against a direct store, Gumroad vs Amazon KDP. Many authors do both: the book on KDP, and a workbook, printable or bonus edition sold directly to their list. For what one printable sale keeps after Etsy's fees, set against Gumroad and KDP, see Etsy printable income, worked out.

    Where Inkfluence AI fits

We make a book-making tool, so here is what it does and does not do for income. It does not sell your book, and nothing on this page is a promise of sales. What it does is make the making fast, which leaves your time for the series, the list and the listing that the survey says drive income. We think it is the best tool for that job, for these reasons:

    • Every kind of book. Novels and series, non-fiction guides, workbooks and journals, cookbooks, and illustrated picture books and coloring books, drafted from your idea in minutes and edited in the same place.
    • KDP-ready files. The KDP package lays out the print interior at the trim you choose and sizes the full-wrap cover to the real page count; the book formatter explains what it handles. It comes with a paid plan or a credit pack.
    • More products from one book. Turn it into an audiobook with the audiobook generator, or into another language with the book translator, each a new edition for new readers.
    • Selling direct. Creator and Premium plans publish a finished book straight to your Etsy or Gumroad shop from the Publish page.

The free plan lets you make a book and export it as a PDF, so you can judge the writing before paying for anything. Plans are on the pricing page.

Estimate your own KDP income in five steps

    1. Work out the royalty per copy. Use the table above or the royalty calculator: 70% minus delivery for ebooks from $2.99 to $12.99, and 60% or 50% minus printing for paperbacks.
    2. Choose an honest sales level. Start from two copies a book a month, the survey's typical rate. Treat ten as doing better than most new authors and 35 as the established rate.
    3. Multiply by the books you will really have. Count only books you will finish, and remember KDP accepts two new titles per format a week.
    4. Subtract what you will spend. Covers, editing, ads and tools. The survey average for marketing alone is $636 a month, and $81 for authors earning under $100.
    5. Publish one book and replace the guess. Your first two or three months of real sales tell you more than any table. Then decide whether the next book is a sequel, a new format of the same book, or something sold directly.

    Frequently asked questions

How much do KDP authors make?

Most make very little and a minority make a living. In the Written Word Media 2025 Indie Author Survey (1,346 authors, self-reported, published 2 December 2025), 44% earned $100 a month or less from their writing, 20% earned $500 to $5,000, 13% earned over $5,000 and 8% earned over $10,000. Amazon was the top revenue source for 83% of them. Catalogue size, series and an email list explain most of the gap.

How much does a KDP book make a month?

For most authors, a few dollars. About 80% of surveyed authors with one to three books earned under $100 a month in total, and the median author with five to nine books earned about $50 a month, roughly $7 a book. At a $4.99 ebook price that is about two copies a book a month. Books in a series, backed by an email list, sell far more.

What is the average KDP income in 2026?

There is no reliable average, because KDP does not publish author income and a few very high earners pull any mean up. The best public picture is the Written Word Media 2025 survey: the largest group, 44%, earned $100 a month or less, while 8% earned over $10,000. Medians by catalogue size are more useful: about $50 a month with five to nine books and about $3,000 a month with 25 or more.

How much do you make per book sold on Amazon KDP?

    A $4.99 Kindle ebook earns $3.45 a copy (70% after about $0.06 delivery) and a $12.99 ebook earns $9.05. A $12.99, 250-page 6 x 9 paperback earns $3.79 after $4.00 printing. A $7.99 coloring book earns $1.16 and the same book at $9.99 earns $3.15, because Amazon.com pays 60% on paperbacks at $9.99 and up and 50% at $9.98 and below. Figures checked on KDP's help pages on 19 October 2026.

Do most KDP authors make money?

Most make some money, but not much. In the Written Word Media 2025 survey, 56% earned more than $100 a month and 44% earned $100 or less. Survey takers are likely more committed than the average account holder, so the real share of KDP accounts earning little is probably higher.

How many books do you need to make a living on KDP?

Taking $5,000 a month as a living and $4.99 ebooks: about 42 books if each sells like an established author's (35 copies a month), 145 if each sells 10 copies, and 725 at the typical two copies. The how many books calculator works this out for any target and format, with the dates KDP's two-titles-a-week limit allows.

How much do Kindle Unlimited authors make?

KDP does not publish a per-page rate. It publishes the total paid to KDP Select authors, which was $69.3 million for September 2026, shared by pages read. In the Written Word Media survey, 38% of authors had all their books in KDP Select, 30% had none, and 43% of authors earning over $5,000 a month had all their books in Select.

Do coloring books and journals make money on KDP?

Less per copy than most books. A $7.99, 104-page 8.5 x 11 coloring book earns $1.16 a copy and a $6.99, 120-page journal earns $1.06, because both sit below the $9.99 line where paperback royalty rises from 50% to 60%. At $9.99 they earn $3.15 and $3.55. KDP's distributors do not accept coloring books, journals, notebooks or planners for Expanded Distribution, so these sell on Amazon only.

Does an email list really change KDP income?

In the Written Word Media 2025 survey, authors with an email list earned a median of about $300 a month and authors without one about $15. A list lets you sell each new book to people who liked the last one, which is how a series grows.

Which genre makes the most money on KDP?

Romance. In the Written Word Media 2025 survey, romance authors were 21% of respondents but about 44% of the group earning over $10,000 a month. Cozy mystery authors appeared more often in every income bracket above $500, and paranormal romance had one of the strongest links with high income.

How many books can I publish on KDP in 2026?

Two new titles per format per week, and separately two titles created per format, drafts included. Ebook, paperback and hardcover count separately, updates do not count, and the limit resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. It was ten a week until 21 September 2026. That is at most about 104 new titles a year in each format.

Can I make more per sale outside Amazon?

Usually yes. On Etsy and Gumroad you set the price and keep more of each sale than a low-priced paperback earns on KDP, and there is no weekly title limit. The trade-off is traffic: Amazon brings buyers to a book, while on your own store or a marketplace you bring more of them yourself.
