How to Make Money Selling AI Ebooks
Seven Models, With the Arithmetic
Seven ways an AI-written ebook earns, what each pays per unit at the platforms' published fees, what indie authors actually report, and the six steps from a draft to a first sale.
Every number on this page has a source at the bottom: KDP's royalty table, Etsy's quarterly results, Gumroad's pricing page, the Written Word Media author survey, the AAP StatShot, and our own platform data. Nothing is estimated.

Quick answer
You make money selling AI ebooks the same way you make it selling any ebook: a specific book for a specific reader, priced inside KDP's 70% band ($2.99 to $12.99), found through Amazon or Etsy search or your own list, and followed by a second and third title. AI changes the cost of the draft, not the economics of the sale. KDP pays $3.43 a copy at $4.99 and $9.03 at $12.99; Etsy has 87 million active buyers and takes 6.5% plus fees; Gumroad takes 10% plus $0.50 and brings nobody. The seven models below say what each pays per unit and what it needs from you, and the AI ebook generator writes the book.
Can you really make money selling AI ebooks?
Yes, and the honest version is more useful than the hype. The market is large and flat: the Association of American Publishers' StatShot for May 2026 put trade ebook revenue at $84.2 million for the month and $429.7 million for the year to date, down 3.5% on 2025, while downloaded audio grew 13% to $100.7 million. Nobody is riding a rising tide. Individual books still earn because readers buy by topic, and a book that solves a named problem for a named reader finds them in a flat market as well as a growing one.
What AI changes is the cost of the draft. A ghostwritten non-fiction book costs thousands and takes months; a draft on Inkfluence AI costs a few chapters of a plan allowance and takes under an hour. Nothing else changes. The cover still has to earn the click, the listing still has to earn the sale, and the book still has to be worth the review it gets. The pages that promise otherwise are the reason "AI ebooks" has a reputation problem.
70%
KDP royalty inside the $2.99 to $12.99 band on Amazon.com, less about six cents delivery per copy.
87M
Active buyers on Etsy in the second quarter of 2026, spending $124 each on average across the year.
40.8%
of the 95,093 books on our platform have been exported at least once. The rest are drafts. Finishing is the filter.
AI-generated books are allowed on every major store. KDP asks you to disclose AI-generated content at upload and treats AI-assisted editing as assistance; our KDP disclosure guide has the form wording.
Seven ways to make money with AI ebooks
What each model pays per unit at the platform's published rate, and what it needs from you. The models combine: the same book can be a KDP title, an Etsy download and the free first chapter on your list.
| Model | What it pays per unit | What it needs from you | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon KDP royalties | 70% of list price less ~$0.06 delivery inside $2.99 to $12.99; 35% outside the band | Keywords, categories, a cover, reviews. Amazon brings the reader | Selling on Amazon |
| Lead magnet for an email list | Nothing on the download; the revenue is the product, service or book you sell to the list afterwards | A landing page, an email tool, and something to sell next | Lead magnet generator |
| Direct sales on Gumroad | Your price less 10% plus $0.50 per sale on your own links; less 30% if the buyer found you through Gumroad Discover | Your own traffic: a list, a channel, an audience | Selling on Gumroad |
| Etsy digital downloads | Your price less $0.20 per listing, 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing | Listing photos and titles Etsy search understands; Etsy brings the buyer | Selling on Etsy |
| Course or programme companion | Whatever the course sells for; the ebook raises perceived value rather than earning on its own | A course, coaching or membership to attach it to | Workbook generator |
| Multi-book series | The same royalty per copy, times the share of readers who buy the next volume | A first book good enough to be finished, and a second one ready | Series writer |
| Email course plus ebook bundle | A bundle price on Gumroad or your site; the drip course is the trust-builder | Five to fourteen emails and one deeper resource | Email course generator |
Two of the seven earn nothing on the ebook itself: the lead magnet and the course companion. They are on the list because they are how most of the authors who earn from a list got the list. The difference between the models is who brings the reader: Amazon and Etsy bring them; Gumroad, your site and your list need you to.
How much can you actually make? The arithmetic
KDP's published rates, worked. Royalty is 70% of list price less about $0.06 delivery inside the $2.99 to $12.99 band. The right-hand columns are the copies you need in a month to reach two of the Written Word Media survey's income tiers.
| List price | Royalty per copy | Copies a month for $500 | Copies a month for $2,500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2.99 | $2.03 | 246 | 1231 |
| $4.99 | $3.43 | 146 | 729 |
| $7.99 | $5.53 | 90 | 452 |
| $9.99 | $6.93 | 72 | 361 |
| $12.99 | $9.03 | 55 | 277 |
That is the whole question in one table. There is no per-model or per-niche income range that any survey supports, and this page used to carry some; they are gone. Model your own numbers with the ebook income calculator, and price inside the band with the pricing guide.
What indie authors report, from the survey that asks
The Written Word Media 2026 mid-year survey asked 582 indie authors about their businesses and grouped them into four monthly income tiers: just starting out at $500 or less, building momentum at $500 to $2,500, got traction at $2,500 to $10,000, and living the dream above $10,000. It does not publish how many authors sit in each tier and it does not separate fiction from non-fiction, so it cannot tell you what an ebook earns. What it does show is what the higher tiers do differently: newsletter use rises from 39% of authors starting out to 73% of those with traction, and Amazon Ads use from 18% to 59%. Authors starting out lean on free channels; the ones earning more built a list and paid for reach.
Read that alongside the royalty table and the plan writes itself. A book earns per copy; copies come from being found; being found comes from Amazon search, Etsy search, ads, or a list you own. The ebook is the product, and the list is the business.
What changes as the catalogue grows
Not revenue figures, which nobody can promise, but the mechanics that change at each size.
| Catalogue | What changes | Effort with AI drafting |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ebook | You learn keywords, covers and positioning. The book is the tuition. | A weekend |
| 3 to 5 ebooks | Cross-sales start: a buyer of one title sees the rest on your author page. | A few weeks |
| 10 ebooks | Your name appears repeatedly in one category's results; readers begin to recognise it. | One to two months |
| 20 or more | A catalogue business: series, bundles, a backlist that sells without a launch. | A quarter of steady publishing |
The median account on our platform has one book. The accounts that sell have several in one niche, because the second book is the cheapest marketing the first one will ever get: it appears beside it in search and on the author page.
Best niches for selling AI ebooks in 2026
We rank niches by what people actually write rather than by a keyword tool. Across 61,879 non-fiction books started on Inkfluence AI, the largest topic groups are education and study skills (12.8% of non-fiction books), AI and automation at work (11.0%), confidence and relationships (10.9%), personal finance (9.3%) and habits and productivity (9.2%). The fastest-rising over the last 90 days are minimalism and decluttering, retirement and seniors, career change, grief, and faith and devotionals. Generic side hustles, cooking and weight loss are cooling.
The full ranked table, with a momentum score for every niche and the price each one holds on KDP, is on the best ebook niches page. Formats are a separate question from subjects: the digital product niches guide covers workbooks, courses and printables by share of all books.

From AI draft to first sale: six steps
Pick the niche from real demand
Use the demand map on our best ebook niches page, which ranks 29 topics by what 61,879 non-fiction books were actually about, then narrow it to one reader with one problem.
Draft the book
Describe the reader and the problem in a few sentences. The plan appears in about a minute; approve it and the chapters follow, 1,000 to 1,500 words each.
Add what only you know
Run the chapter review for quoted fixes, then rewrite the openings and add your own examples. The books that sell are the ones a reader can tell were written by someone who has done the thing.
Make the cover and the listing
The cover designer handles the front and the print wrap; the book description generator writes the listing copy; the title and keyword tools handle Amazon search.
Export and publish
Kindle EPUB and print PDF for KDP, PDF for Gumroad and Etsy, DOCX if an editor wants it. Etsy and Gumroad publish from the app.
Publish the next one
On our platform 40.8% of books are exported at least once; the ones that earn are the ones that become a second and third title in the same niche.
The tools for each step live in one workspace: the outline generator for the plan, the AI book editor for the review, the cover designer, the book description generator for the listing, and the KDP tools for keywords and categories.
Where to sell: the platforms at their real fees
Fees as published by each platform. The column that decides is the audience one: two of these bring the reader, two do not.
| Platform | Your cut | Audience | Best for | Upfront |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon KDP | 70% inside $2.99 to $12.99 (less ~$0.06 delivery); 35% outside | Amazon brings the reader; the largest ebook store | Volume, evergreen non-fiction, fiction series | Free to publish |
| Gumroad | 10% plus $0.50 per sale on your links; 30% on Discover sales | Your own | Playbooks, templates and bundles at $19 to $47 | Free; no monthly fee |
| Etsy | $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction fee, plus payment processing | 87 million active buyers (Q2 2026) | Printables, planners, workbooks, recipe books | $0.20 per listing |
| Your own site | Payment processing only | Your own | Full control; bundles; the top of a funnel | Hosting and an email tool |
Inkfluence AI publishes to Etsy and Gumroad from the app and exports the KDP package for Amazon. The Amazon guide has the upload steps and the Select versus wide guide has the exclusivity decision.
Seven mistakes that kill AI ebook sales
Publishing the first draft
A draft is material. Readers notice unedited AI prose within a page and say so in reviews. Review, cut, add your voice.
Choosing the generic niche
"How to be happy" competes with everything. The demand map shows the generic side-hustle and weight-loss niches cooling; the specific versions still sell.
A cover that looks like a template
The cover is the click. Give it the time the chapters got.
Ignoring keywords and categories
Amazon search is how the reader arrives. Seven keyword slots and two categories decide whether the book is found.
Publishing one book and waiting
One title teaches you the process. The catalogue is what earns.
Not building a list
The email list is the only audience you own. A free short version of the book is the cheapest way to start one.
A weak description
The listing is a sales page. Write it for the reader who is deciding, not for yourself.
Inkfluence AI versus a chat assistant for selling ebooks
A chat assistant can write text. Selling an ebook needs a file, a cover, a listing and a storefront.
| For selling | Inkfluence AI | Chat assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A structured book: chapters, contents, front and back matter | Text in a chat window |
| Kindle EPUB and print PDF | Exported from the book, with a KDP package and wrap cover | Not available; you assemble the file elsewhere |
| Cover | Cover designer with AI art on paid plans | Not available |
| Book types | 33 book types with their own structures | Generic prompting |
| Editor | Chapter editor with review, quick actions and a book-aware chat | The chat itself |
| Continuity across chapters | Automatic; fiction keeps a story bible | You manage it by hand |
| Time to a first complete draft | Under an hour for a 10-chapter non-fiction book | Hours of prompting, then formatting |
| Publishing | Etsy and Gumroad from the app; KDP package for upload | Not available |
The AI book writer page has the full workflow, and the ebook generator comparison puts the dedicated tools side by side.
Who is doing this
Side hustlers
A title a week alongside a job, building a KDP catalogue in one niche.
Course creators
A workbook or companion that raises the price of the course.
Marketers
A lead magnet that fills the list, then a paid guide behind it.
First-time authors
The first book on Amazon, with an author page and a second one planned.
Coaches and consultants
A book as the credential, sold direct and given to prospects.
Etsy sellers
Planners, workbooks and recipe books where Etsy search does the marketing.
Non-fiction is about 69% of what is written on the platform and fiction the rest; the non-fiction authors page covers the writing side, and the novel writer the series model for fiction.
