How Much Does It Cost to Publish a Book? Every Line, Priced (2026)
By Sam May, Founder of Inkfluence AI
Short answer
Publishing a book on Amazon KDP costs nothing: no setup fee, no yearly fee, and a free ISBN for the paperback. Amazon is paid from your sales instead, keeping roughly 30% to 65% of each one depending on format and price. The money goes on the work around the upload: editing, a cover, formatting and copies for yourself, which run from about $40.39 if you do them yourself with Inkfluence AI to $2,755.40 to $4,605.40 if you hire every one for a 60,000-word memoir.

Why we wrote this page
A customer told us that his 82-year-old sister had just paid $4,000 to have her book edited and "published on Amazon KDP". If she is happy with the book, that matters more than anything on this page. But she did not know that the publishing part, the bit with Amazon's name on it, costs nothing, or what the rest of the money had bought.
That is a common story. Packages that bundle editing, design and an upload are sold to first-time authors every day, and some of them are good value. The trouble is that the price usually arrives as one number. Once you split it into its lines and put a separate price next to each, it becomes easy to see which parts are skilled work worth paying for and which parts you can do yourself in an afternoon.
So this page does three things. It shows what Amazon charges (nothing up front) and what it keeps. It takes a typical $4,000 package apart line by line, with the price of each line bought on its own. And it shows where Inkfluence AI, our own tool, can do a line for the price of one month's plan, and where it cannot. If you are weighing up a company right now, our guide to choosing a book publishing service covers what to look for in one.
Publishing on Amazon is free: what KDP charges and what it keeps
Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon's own self-publishing service, is where most self-published books are sold. Its help pages say it plainly: "KDP allows you to self-publish eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcover books for free." You open an account with your normal Amazon login, fill in the book's details, upload a manuscript file and a cover, set a price and press Publish. There is no setup fee, no annual fee and no charge for changing the book later.
Amazon earns from your sales instead. For ebooks you choose one of two royalty options. The 70% option applies when the list price on Amazon.com is between $2.99 and $12.99 (the top of that band went up from $9.99 on 7 July 2026), and Amazon deducts a small delivery charge of $0.15 for each megabyte of the file. Outside that band, or if you choose it, you get 35% with no delivery charge. A typical text-only book is about a megabyte.
For paperbacks, KDP pays 60% of the list price at $9.99 or more and 50% at $9.98 or less, then subtracts the cost of printing that copy. If you switch on Expanded Distribution, which offers the book to bookshops and libraries, sales through that channel pay 40% minus printing. Our KDP royalties guide has every band and marketplace; here is what the memoir in our worked example (170 pages, $3.04 to print) earns.
| Paperback list price | Rate | You earn |
|---|---|---|
| $9.98 | 50% | $1.95 |
| $12.99 | 60% | $4.75 |
| $14.99 | 60% | $5.95 |
| $17.99 | 60% | $7.75 |
| Ebook list price (1 MB) | Rate | You earn |
|---|---|---|
| $0.99 | 35% | $0.35 |
| $2.99 | 70% | $1.99 |
| $4.99 | 70% | $3.39 |
| $9.99 | 70% | $6.89 |
| $12.99 | 70% | $8.99 |
| $14.99 | 35% | $5.25 |
Amazon.com, sales on Amazon, checked 22 Oct 2026. Paperback: 6 x 9 inch, black ink, 170 pages, $3.04 printing. Ebook: 70% band $2.99 to $12.99 minus $0.15 a megabyte; 35% elsewhere.
Those per-copy figures put any upfront spend in proportion. To earn back $4,000 from royalties alone, the memoir would need to sell about 673 paperbacks at $14.99 or about 1,180 ebooks at $4.99. Plenty of family memoirs are written to be given, not sold, and that is a perfectly good reason to publish. It is still worth knowing the number before you decide what to spend. The royalty calculator works this out for any price and store, and what KDP authors make shows the realistic spread of sales.
What a $4,000 "edit and publish" package is made of
This is a worked example, not a quote from any real company. It is the shape these packages commonly take for a 60,000-word memoir, paperback and ebook, with prices set to add up to $4,000. Next to each line is what that line costs on its own, from the sources on this page, and what Inkfluence AI does for it.
| Package line | In the package | Bought on its own | With Inkfluence AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional edit | $1,600 | $1,620 to $2,100 for a copyedit, $1,020 to $1,200 for a proofread | AI Assist reviews every chapter; Creator adds a whole-book review and editorial letter |
| Cover design | $650 | $630 to $1,200 (Reedsy median $930) | Cover designer: front cover and full paperback wrap with spine |
| Interior formatting | $450 | $475 to $1,275 (Reedsy average $800), or $0 with free tools | KDP package: print-ready interior PDF and Kindle EPUB |
| ISBN | $125 | $125 from Bowker, or $0 with a free KDP ISBN | Use the free KDP ISBN, or enter your own |
| Amazon KDP setup and upload | $500 | $0. KDP charges nothing to publish | You upload; the Amazon listing kit drafts the description, keywords and categories |
| Ten author copies | $150 | $30.40 at print cost (170 pages), plus shipping | Order from your own KDP account at print cost |
| Marketing kit | $525 | $60 to $1,500 (Reedsy), or what you do yourself | Book description generator and listing kit |
| Total | $4,000 | $2,755.40 to $4,605.40 for the edit, cover, formatting and copies, plus marketing if you want it | $40.39: one month of Creator and ten copies at print cost |
Read down the middle column and most of the package is fairly priced. A professional copyedit of 60,000 words of memoir costs $1,620 to $2,100 at the Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 median rates, so $1,600 is, if anything, on the low side. A $650 cover and $450 of formatting sit at or just below the range where half of Reedsy's projects fall. If the people doing that work are skilled, those three lines buy something real.
Three lines are different. KDP setup and upload ($500) pays for filling in a form that Amazon provides for free: title, description, keywords, categories, price and two file uploads. It is a careful hour or two, not a skill. The ISBN ($125) is the full single-ISBN price from Bowker, which is worth paying if the ISBN is registered to you; if it is the free KDP one, it cost the company nothing. Ten author copies ($150) would cost $30.40 at KDP's print cost, plus shipping. Together that is $775 for things that cost at most $155.40 plus postage.
The marketing kit ($525) is the hardest line to judge, because the phrase can mean anything from a press release nobody reads to a real launch plan. Reedsy puts marketing anywhere from $60 to $1,500. Ask what is in it, item by item, and whether any of it depends on you.
None of this makes a package a bad decision. For someone who does not want to touch a computer, paying a person to handle everything is a fair trade, and a good company earns its fee in the work you never see. What matters is that the book goes up on your own KDP account, that the files and ISBN are yours, and that you keep every royalty. The real cost of publishing breakdown runs the same lines for three budgets, from under $300 to over $8,000.
Editing: the biggest line, and the one worth getting right
Editing is where most of a self-publishing budget goes, and it is the line where paying a good person makes the most difference. Editors sell it in layers. A developmental edit looks at the whole book: structure, pacing, what is missing. A copyedit fixes grammar, consistency and clarity sentence by sentence. A proofread is the last check of the laid-out pages for typos. Each costs more per word the higher it sits.
Our book editing cost guide is the home of these numbers on our site, with rates by genre from the EFA, Reedsy and the UK's CIEP. The calculator above uses its EFA medians. For a 60,000-word memoir that comes to $1,020 to $1,200 for a proofread, $1,620 to $2,100 for a copyedit and $4,740 to $6,000 for all three layers. Fiction runs a little cheaper per word and non-fiction a little dearer; picture-book editors usually charge a flat $300 to $500 instead.
What Inkfluence AI does. Import the manuscript (Word, PDF, EPUB or plain text; chapters are detected from your headings) and open AI Assist. Its review reads a chapter and lists what to fix in order of importance: the exact passage, what is wrong, why it matters to a reader and a suggested fix you can apply or dismiss. Nothing changes unless you accept it. Creator and Premium add a whole-book review that reads the book end to end and writes an editorial letter. The free plan includes 3 AI assists a day, Creator 15 and Premium 100. See the AI manuscript editor for how a review looks, or importing your manuscript for the first step.
Its limits. An AI review catches typos, repeated words, unclear sentences, slack pacing and facts that contradict an earlier chapter. It does not replace an editor's judgement about whether a novel's structure works, or a careful human eye on the final printed pages. Running it first does make any human edit cheaper and faster, because the editor spends the hours on the things only a person can see. Editing your own writing with AI tools is "AI-assisted" in KDP's terms and does not need disclosing; our KDP AI disclosure guide explains the line.
Cover design: the line readers judge first
Reedsy's figures (updated August 2026) put the median cover design project at $930, with over half falling between $630 and $1,200. Those prices buy a designer who knows what your genre's covers look like and can work from a brief. A paperback also needs a back cover and spine, sized to the exact page count and paper; ask whether a quote includes that wrap or only the front.
The free route is KDP's own Cover Creator, which builds a cover from templates inside the upload screens. It works, and it looks like what it is. Paid premade covers sit in between.
What Inkfluence AI does. The cover designer makes the front cover from your own image or an AI-generated one (10 AI cover generations a month on Creator, 30 on Premium) and builds the full paperback wrap, back cover and spine included, sized to your trim, page count and paper type. The wrap comes as a print-ready PDF in every KDP export. The AI book cover generator page shows examples, and the KDP cover size and spine calculator explains the measurements. For a fantasy series where the covers carry the brand, a specialist designer is still the better buy.
Formatting: the print interior and the Kindle file
Formatting turns the manuscript into two files: a PDF laid out at the trim size for the paperback, with margins, running heads and page numbers, and an ebook file for Kindle. Reedsy puts professional interior design at $800 on average, with half of projects between $475 and $1,275. A book with tables, footnotes or photos costs more.
Amazon offers a free tool, Kindle Create, for text-heavy books with simple layouts such as novels and memoirs, and KDP also accepts a carefully set up Word file. Both are fine for a straightforward book if you have the patience to check every page.
What Inkfluence AI does. The KDP export builds one download with a READ ME, the print-ready interior PDF at your trim size (6 x 9, 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 and others), the full wrap cover PDF and the Kindle EPUB, each named for the box it goes in on KDP. Any paid plan or a credit pack unlocks it; the free plan exports a PDF with a small Inkfluence footer. The AI book formatter page has the details, how to format a book for KDP covers the rules, and the book length calculator turns your word count into pages.
ISBNs: free on KDP, $125 if you want your own
An ISBN identifies one edition of a book. On KDP, ebooks do not need one at all, and paperbacks and hardcovers can take a free KDP ISBN. The free one comes with two conditions: the imprint shows as "Independently published", and it can only be used on KDP.
If you want your own imprint name on the book, or plan to print the same edition through another printer, buy your own. In the US, Bowker sells one ISBN for $125 or ten for $295, so ten is cheaper as soon as you need three. Each format needs its own. Our guide to whether you need an ISBN has prices for other countries. If a package includes an ISBN, ask whose name it is registered to.
Author copies and proof copies: print cost plus postage
Once your paperback is set up, KDP lets you order copies of it for yourself at the printing cost, with shipping and tax added at checkout. You can order a proof copy before the book goes on sale to check it in your hands. On Amazon.com, a black-and-white paperback of up to 110 pages costs $2.30 to print; longer ones cost $1.00 plus $0.012 a page. Colour costs more: a 32-page premium colour picture book at 8.5 x 8.5 inches is $4.20.
So the 170-page memoir costs $3.04 a copy, and ten for the family are $30.40 before postage. Author copies earn no royalty, since you are buying from yourself. If you want copies printed somewhere other than Amazon, the guide to printing one copy of a book compares the options, and the IngramSpark cost calculator prices copies there.
Audiobook narration: hired, read yourself, or AI
Narrators charge per finished hour of audio. Authors Republic's guide puts a beginner at about $100 an hour, an experienced narrator at $200 and the best at $300 to $1,000 or more. An hour of audio holds about 9,300 words, so the 60,000-word memoir is roughly 6.5 hours: $645 to $1,935 at $100 to $300 an hour. Some narrators work for a share of royalties instead of a fee.
For a memoir, the author's own voice is often the best narrator there is. You need a quiet room, a decent microphone and patience; narrate your own audiobook walks through it, and the audiobook length calculator estimates the running time.
What Inkfluence AI does. The AI audiobook generator narrates the book chapter by chapter: 15 chapters a month on Creator, 30 on Premium (none on the free plan). You can export retail-ready files. Know where they can go: Audible's ACX does not accept AI narration, so an AI-narrated edition is sold through stores that do. A human narrator remains the choice for an audiobook aimed at Audible, or a novel whose dialogue needs a performer. Our ACX audiobook guide covers both routes.
What it costs to publish four kinds of book
The same calculator, run for four typical books: paperback and ebook, a copyedit (one flat edit pass for the picture book), cover and formatting, free KDP ISBN and ten author copies, no audiobook. "Every job hired" buys each service separately; "with Inkfluence AI" is one month of Creator plus the copies. Bar length is the high end of the hired range divided by the highest in the table ($7,967).
Grey: every job hired (light to the low end of the range, dark to the high end). Violet: with Inkfluence AI. Print cost on Amazon.com; shipping, tax and marketing excluded.
The picture book is the outlier because of illustration, which Reedsy puts at $1,540 to $4,950 for a 24-page book. Our children's book illustration cost guide has the full range, and the AI picture book maker shows what one month of Creator makes instead. If you have your own drawings, turn your illustrations into a picture book and skip the line altogether.
How to publish a book on Amazon for free, step by step
This is the whole route from finished manuscript to a book on sale, with the cost of each step. Our step-by-step KDP guide goes deeper on every screen.
- Finish and edit the manuscript ($0 to the cost of an editor). Read it aloud, give it to two readers you trust, and run AI Assist chapter by chapter. Decide whether a human proofread is worth it for your book.
- Make the interior ($0). Use Kindle Create or a Word template, or import into Inkfluence AI and export the KDP package. Check the page count: you need it for the cover and the print cost.
- Make the cover ($0). KDP Cover Creator or the Inkfluence cover designer. For a paperback you need the full wrap, sized to the page count.
- Open a KDP account ($0). Sign in at kdp.amazon.com with an Amazon account, then complete the tax and bank details so royalties can be paid.
- Create the ebook ($0). Enter the title, author, description, seven keywords and categories. Upload the EPUB and the front cover. Choose the 70% royalty if the price is between $2.99 and $12.99.
- Create the paperback ($0). Take the free KDP ISBN or enter your own, choose trim size and paper, upload the interior PDF and the wrap cover, and use the previewer to check every page.
- Order a proof (print cost plus shipping). Hold it, read it, mark it, fix the file. This is the step most worth not skipping.
- Publish ($0). Set the price and press Publish. KDP reviews the book before it goes on sale, usually within a few days; then order your author copies.
If you need the listing words, the book description generator drafts the blurb, and the Publish page in Inkfluence AI gathers the title, description, seven keywords and categories with copy buttons to paste into KDP. For trim sizes, see the KDP trim size guide; for the bigger picture, the self-publishing guide.
What Inkfluence AI does for each line, and what it does not
We built Inkfluence AI for the do-it-yourself path, and for that path we think it is the best value there is: one monthly price covers the editing pass, the cover, the files and the audiobook, and you can cancel between books. Here is the honest version, line by line.
Editing
AI Assist reviews any chapter, written in the app or imported from Word, PDF, EPUB or text. Whole-book review and editorial letter on Creator and Premium. Not a substitute for a developmental editor on a complex novel.
Cover
Front cover from your image or an AI one (10 a month on Creator, 30 on Premium), plus the full paperback wrap with spine and back cover.
Formatting
KDP package: print-ready interior PDF, full wrap cover PDF and Kindle EPUB, unlocked by any paid plan or credit pack. Also Word export.
Audiobook
AI narration, 15 chapters a month on Creator and 30 on Premium. Not accepted by ACX; sold through stores that take AI narration.
Publishing
We do not publish for you, because Amazon does not let any app list a book. You upload to your own KDP account and keep all your royalties. We take no share of sales.
Price
Free plan: 5 chapters and PDF export with a small footer. Creator $9.99 a month or $89 a year. Premium $19.99 a month or $179 a year. Credit packs from $9.99.
The full comparison is on the pricing page. If you are starting from an idea rather than a manuscript, the same tools write a draft for you to shape; the AI book editor is the place to start if the draft is already yours.
Questions to ask before you pay anyone to publish your book
A good service will answer all of these happily and in writing. The Alliance of Independent Authors, which rates publishing services, lists the warning signs as pressure to sign quickly, prices that only appear on a sales call, guarantees of sales or bestseller status, and glowing reviews that cannot be found anywhere else. Its advice: "Legitimate services don't need to rush you."
- Who owns the files and the ISBN? You should get the final interior, cover and ebook files, and the ISBN should be registered to you, or be the free KDP one on your account.
- Whose KDP account is it? The book should go up on an account in your name, so you see every sale and can change the price yourself.
- Do I keep 100% of my royalties? Amazon pays the account holder. Any service that takes a percentage of sales on top of its fee should say so on page one.
- What does each line cost? Ask for the quote split into editing, cover, formatting, ISBN, copies and marketing, then compare with the calculator above.
- What happens if I want to leave? Can you take the book down, move it, or publish a new edition without them, and is there a fee?
- Who does the editing, and what kind? A named editor, the type of edit, and a sample of a few pages before you commit.
ALLi's free services directory rates thousands of companies, and is worth a search before you pay anyone. For how to compare the companies themselves, see choosing a book publishing service.
When it is worth hiring a professional
The cheapest route is not always the right one, and we would rather you spend money in the right place than none at all. These are the cases where a person is worth the fee:
- A developmental editor for a novel when you are not sure the story holds together. A good edit letter can save a year of rewriting. Our AI developmental editor page shows how far AI gets you first.
- A human proofreader on the final pages of any print book you care about. Errors that survive into print stay there.
- A specialist cover designer for genre fiction or a series, where the covers do the selling.
- An illustrator for a picture book with a particular style in mind.
- A narrator if the audiobook is going to Audible through ACX, or the book is dialogue-heavy fiction.
- A full-service company if you would simply rather not do any of it. That is a reasonable choice; ask the questions above first.
For everything else, the work is learnable and the tools are cheap. Before paying for readers' reactions, an AI beta reader can show you where the draft loses attention. And if you are writing a life story, how to write a memoir with AI covers keeping it in your own voice.
Publishing costs: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to publish a book on Amazon?
Nothing. Amazon's KDP help says it "allows you to self-publish eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcover books for free". There is no setup fee and no yearly fee; Amazon takes its share from each sale instead. What costs money is everything around the upload: editing, a cover, formatting, an ISBN if you want your own, and copies you order for yourself ($3.04 each for a 170-page paperback, plus shipping).
How much does it cost to self-publish a book in 2026?
Anywhere from about $40 to over $5,000. Reedsy puts a professionally produced book at $2,940 to $5,660. Hiring each service separately for a 60,000-word memoir comes to $2,755.40 to $4,605.40 on our calculator. Doing the same work yourself with one month of Inkfluence AI Creator costs $40.39, of which $30.40 is ten author copies at print cost.
How can I publish a book for free?
Write and self-edit the manuscript, format it with a free tool such as Kindle Create or a Word template, make a cover with KDP Cover Creator, take the free KDP ISBN for the paperback (the ebook needs none), and upload it all to your own KDP account. Every step can cost $0. The trade is time and care, and most authors pay for at least one thing: a proofread or a cover.
What does KDP take from each sale?
For ebooks you choose 35% or 70% royalty; 70% applies from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com (the top of the band rose from $9.99 on 7 July 2026), minus a delivery charge of $0.15 a megabyte. For paperbacks you get 60% of the list price at $9.99 or more (50% at $9.98 and under) minus the print cost. A $14.99 memoir paperback of 170 pages pays $5.95 a copy; a $4.99 ebook pays $3.39.
Do I need to buy an ISBN to publish on Amazon?
No. KDP gives a free ISBN for paperbacks and hardcovers, and ebooks need no ISBN on KDP at all. The free one lists the imprint as "Independently published" and can only be used on KDP. If you want your own imprint or plan to print elsewhere, Bowker sells one ISBN for $125 or ten for $295 in the US.
Is it worth paying $4,000 to publish a book?
It can be, if most of the money buys real editing and design you could not do yourself and you keep your rights, your KDP account and all your royalties. It is not worth paying for the parts that are free: KDP setup, the upload and a KDP ISBN. Ask for a line-by-line quote and compare each line with the separate prices on this page.
How much do author copies cost on KDP?
The printing cost times the number of copies, plus shipping and tax at checkout. A black-and-white paperback of 110 pages or fewer costs $2.30 to print on Amazon.com; longer books cost $1.00 plus $0.012 a page, so a 170-page memoir is $3.04 a copy and ten copies are $30.40 before shipping.
How much does an audiobook cost to make?
A human narrator charges per finished hour: about $100 for a beginner, $200 for an experienced narrator and $300 to $1,000 or more for the best. At 9,300 words an hour, a 60,000-word memoir runs about 6.5 hours, so $645 to $1,935. Narrating it yourself costs your time. AI narration on Inkfluence AI is 15 chapters a month on Creator and 30 on Premium.
Does Inkfluence AI publish my book on Amazon for me?
No, and that is deliberate. Amazon does not let any app list a book for you. Inkfluence AI makes the files (print interior PDF, full wrap cover PDF and Kindle EPUB) and drafts the listing text; you upload them to your own KDP account, so the book, the account and every royalty stay yours.
What should I still pay a professional for?
A developmental editor for a novel whose structure is in doubt, a human proofreader on the final pages of any print book you care about, a specialist cover designer for genre fiction or a series, an illustrator for a picture book with a particular style, and a narrator if your audiobook is going to a store that requires a human voice.
