How to Sell Ebooks on Lemon Squeezy in 2026: Fees, Tax and Setup

Selling an ebook on Lemon Squeezy in 2026, from its own pricing page and help docs checked 28 October: the 5% + $0.50 fee and every extra, tax handled as merchant of record, payouts, store approval, what you cannot sell, what Stripe's ownership and Managed Payments mean for new sellers, a step-by-step setup and a calculator against Payhip and Gumroad.

Quick Answer

Lemon Squeezy is a good home for an ebook if you want one company to deal with sales tax and VAT in every country. It charges 5% + $0.50 per sale with card fees included, so a $9.99 ebook bought by a US reader leaves $8.99; it adds 1.5% for buyers outside the US and 1.5% for PayPal. As the merchant of record, it sells the book on your behalf and pays the tax. The question mark in 2026 is its future: Stripe owns it, its team is building Stripe Managed Payments, and the sign-up page now asks about your business to "recommend the best path", so a new seller may be pointed there instead. Existing stores work as before, payouts come twice a month, and there is no rule against AI-written ebooks.

Checked on 28 October 2026. Every fee, rule and feature below comes from Lemon Squeezy's own pricing page and help docs, Stripe's documentation, and Payhip's and Gumroad's pricing pages, read that day and listed in Sources. Money examples are in US dollars, before sales tax and VAT, unless they say otherwise. Where a company did not say something, we say so instead of guessing.

Lemon Squeezy started as a checkout for software makers, but it is also one of the simpler ways to sell a single digital file. You upload an ebook, set a price and share a link; Lemon Squeezy takes the payment, adds the right tax for the buyer's country, emails the download and pays you twice a month. No monthly fee, no tax registration on your side.

This guide covers the full cost per sale, tax, payouts, store approval, what Stripe's ownership changes, a step-by-step setup and how it compares with Payhip, Gumroad, Etsy and Sellfy. If you are still deciding between selling direct and the ebook stores, start with where to sell ebooks in 2026.

Disclosure: Inkfluence AI is our product. It writes ebooks with you and exports the PDF and EPUB files you upload to Lemon Squeezy. Lemon Squeezy and Stripe do not pay us, and we have no affiliate link to either.

Who owns Lemon Squeezy now, and the move to Stripe

Stripe, the payments company, bought Lemon Squeezy in 2024. Three things have happened since, and they matter more than any fee.

  • The team is building Stripe's own version. On 28 January 2026 co-founder JR Farr wrote on the Lemon Squeezy blog that the team had been "heads-down building" Stripe's merchant-of-record product, Stripe Managed Payments, which had meant "slower support responses and less frequent product updates". He said the goal is "to provide Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate". That post is still the newest on Lemon Squeezy's blog and changelog. Stripe added Managed Payments to its API in preview on 25 February 2026 and to the regular API on 22 April 2026.
  • The legal seller has a new name. The small print on every Lemon Squeezy page and in its terms now reads "Sold through Link, LLC f/k/a Lemon Squeezy LLC" (formerly known as), and the Lemon Squeezy name is listed as a Stripe trademark. Link is Stripe's checkout brand, the name buyers see on Managed Payments sales.
  • New sign-ups are triaged. "Get started" now opens a page headed "Find the right setup for your business": "Stripe offers merchant of record products for digital businesses selling globally. Tell us a bit about your business and we'll recommend the best path for you." It asks for a business name, website and country. We did not submit it, so we can't say which sellers get a Lemon Squeezy store and which are sent to Managed Payments.

What this means for you. If you already sell on Lemon Squeezy, keep going: no shutdown date or forced move had been announced by 28 October 2026, and its help docs still describe the usual set-up. Export your orders and subscribers now and then, so any future move is a chore rather than a scramble. If you are starting today, try the sign-up and see which path you are offered. If you want a platform with a settled future, Payhip and Gumroad are independent; our Payhip vs Gumroad comparison covers both.

Stripe Managed Payments for an ebook author

Stripe's docs list e-books as supported. It costs 3.5% per sale on top of Stripe's standard fee (2.9% + $0.30 in the US), so about 6.4% + $0.30, plus 1.5% for international cards: cheaper than Lemon Squeezy on a US card sale below about $14.29 (a $9.99 ebook leaves about $9.05), dearer above it. It handles tax in more than 80 countries. But it is open only to businesses in 35 countries (the US, Canada, 29 in Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore) after a review, takes no PayPal, shows the sale as "Sold through Link", and lets Stripe refund buyers within 60 days, or without asking you if you don't answer its questions within 48 hours. You sell through Stripe payment links; the docs describe no file hosting, storefront, affiliates or email, so for an ebook you arrange the download yourself.

Fees: what Lemon Squeezy keeps from a sale

The pricing page shows "5% + 50¢" per transaction, with an asterisk: "Some payments may be subject to additional fees". The fees page in the help docs lists them.

The platform fee and its surcharges

Lemon Squeezy takes 5% of the order plus $0.50, and this one fee covers card processing, currency conversion and tax handling. There is no separate Stripe or PayPal bill, unlike Payhip and Gumroad. On a $9.99 ebook bought by a US reader with a card, you keep $8.99. Two surcharges are added when they apply: +1.5% when the buyer is outside the US ($9.99 leaves $8.84) and +1.5% when they pay with PayPal (a buyer abroad paying with PayPal leaves $8.69). A third, +0.5%, applies only to subscription payments.

The fee is charged on the total, tax included

The fees page says the platform fee "is calculated on the total order value", and its examples include the tax. Lemon Squeezy's own UK example: a $15 product plus 20% VAT is an $18.00 total; the fee is $0.50 + 5% of $18 + 1.5%, or $1.67, and you keep $13.33. So you pay the percentage on the tax too, about 13 cents extra on a $9.99 ebook sold to the UK. Card processors elsewhere also charge on the full amount paid, so expect real figures to sit a little below any pre-tax calculation.

Stacked bar titled Where an $18 checkout goes, for a $15 ebook bought by a UK reader paying by card with 20% VAT added on top: you keep $13.33, VAT paid to the UK $3.00, platform fee $1.67. Fee equals $0.50 plus 5% of $18 plus 1.5% outside the US, worked out on the total including VAT, an example from Lemon Squeezy's own help docs
Lemon Squeezy's own worked example. The fee is calculated on the total the buyer pays, VAT included.

Fees that only apply when you use a feature

  • Abandoned-cart emails: +5% on revenue they win back. They are on by default (not for stores under a week old); turn them off under Settings, Recovery.
  • Affiliate sales: +3% on each referred order, on top of the commission.
  • Chargebacks: a $15 dispute fee plus the refunded amount.
  • Refunds: the refunded amount minus the platform fee comes off your next payout, so the fee on a refunded sale is not returned.
  • Payouts: free to a US bank, 1% to a bank elsewhere, $0.50 per PayPal payout in the US, 3% (capped at $30) per PayPal payout elsewhere.

For cheap ebooks: the fees page invites sellers who "sell products lower than $10" to contact sales for custom pricing. If your catalogue is mostly $2.99 to $4.99 titles, where the fixed $0.50 bites hardest, ask.

Lemon Squeezy and Payhip's free plan sit within cents of each other. Below about $6.90 Payhip keeps more, because Lemon Squeezy's fixed $0.50 is larger than Stripe's $0.30; above it Lemon Squeezy is slightly ahead on card sales, and further ahead on PayPal sales, since PayPal's own US rate is 3.49% + $0.49. Gumroad trails both. For setting the price itself, see how to price an ebook.

Lemon Squeezy, per month

Lemon Squeezy, per year

Constants, checked 28 Oct 2026, before sales tax and VAT. Lemon Squeezy (pricing page and fees doc): 5% + $0.50 per order including processing, +1.5% outside the US, +1.5% PayPal; payouts twice a month, free to a US bank, 1% to other banks, PayPal $0.50 (US) or 3% capped at $30; a balance under $50 rolls over. Payhip (payhip.com/pricing): Free 5%, Plus $29 a month + 2%, plus Stripe 2.9% + $0.30 (+1.5% international cards) or PayPal Checkout 3.49% + $0.49 (+1.5% international). Gumroad (gumroad.com/pricing and help): 10% + $0.50 plus 2.9% + $0.30 card processing, 5% + $0.50 after $20,000 of sales in a month; Discover and PayPal fees not modelled. Stripe Managed Payments (stripe.com/managed-payments): 3.5% on top of Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30, +1.5% international cards; it takes no PayPal, so every sale is counted as a card sale. Payout costs are modelled for Lemon Squeezy only.

    Write the ebook to sell

A typical result: a $9.99 ebook selling 50 copies a month, with 30% of buyers abroad and 20% paying by PayPal, leaves about $446 a month on Lemon Squeezy, $440 on Payhip Free, $426 on Payhip Plus after its fee, $395 on Gumroad and $450 on Stripe Managed Payments (if every buyer paid by card). The top four are within $25 a month, so at this level choose on tax, payout timing and tools rather than fees. For a broader income target, try the ebook income calculator.

Merchant of record: tax handled for you

Sell an ebook to a reader in Germany, Australia or Texas and that place may expect VAT or sales tax, often from the first digital sale. Doing it yourself means registering, charging the right rate and filing returns in each place. With Lemon Squeezy you never do, because it is the merchant of record: "the legal entity selling goods or services to an end customer". The buyer buys from Lemon Squeezy, which is responsible for "collecting sales tax, processing refunds and chargebacks", adds the tax at checkout and deducts it before your payout to "report and remit" it.

    • Tax category. Each product needs one. Choose "eBooks" ("digital versions of books that you can download for permanent access"): many countries tax ebooks at a lower rate than other digital products.
    • Tax on top or included. Tax is added to your price by default; a store-wide "tax-inclusive pricing" setting makes $9.99 the price every buyer pays, with tax inside it.
    • Income tax is still yours. You "shouldn't need to report sales tax" on its sales, but "may need to pay tax on the income you receive". Each payout comes with a downloadable "reverse invoice" for your records.

Gumroad has also been merchant of record for all sales since 1 January 2025, and Payhip now collects and pays EU and UK VAT plus US and Canadian sales tax (not Quebec QST). Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad cover everywhere; Payhip covers the regions most English-language authors sell into, as our guide to selling ebooks on Payhip explains.

Getting paid: schedule, minimum and countries

    • Payouts are created on the 1st and 15th, covering all sales since the last one.
    • Each sale is held for 13 days; payouts are sent on the 14th and 28th and take 1 to 5 days to arrive. Lemon Squeezy's example: a sale on the 4th joins the payout created on the 15th, paid on the 28th.
    • The minimum payout is $50; smaller balances roll into the next cycle.
    • Payouts are in US dollars, converted at the mid-market rate for a bank in another currency. PayPal payouts stay in US dollars and need a verified account.
Timeline titled When a sale reaches you, Lemon Squeezy payout schedule: sale made on day 4; payout created on day 15 covering sales since the 1st; payout sent on day 28 after a 13-day hold, then 1 to 5 days to reach your bank. Boxes below: payouts created on the 1st and 15th; paid on the 14th and 28th; minimum payout $50, otherwise it rolls over
A sale takes two to five weeks to reach your bank. Payhip, by contrast, deposits each sale straight into your own PayPal or Stripe account.

So a sale reaches your bank two to five weeks after it happens, and only once your balance passes $50 (six sales at $9.99). Payhip deposits each payment into your own PayPal or Stripe account the moment the sale completes; Gumroad needs a $100 balance.

    Which countries can sell

You can sell if you can be paid into a bank in one of the countries on Lemon Squeezy's list (close to 120, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, India, Nigeria, the Philippines and South Africa) or a verified PayPal account in one of 200-plus countries. Since May 2024 Stripe has accepted new Indian accounts only by invitation, so Indian sellers without a pre-approved Stripe account must use PayPal. Buyers can pay from anywhere except 18 blocked countries, including Russia, Iran and Cuba. Prices can show in 130 currencies but are charged in US dollars at the mid-market rate with no conversion fee, and checkout comes in 33 languages.

Store approval, ID checks and what you can't sell

A new account starts in test mode. To sell for real you click "Activate your store": a short questionnaire about your business and customers, then an identity check with a photo of a government-issued ID. Approvals "typically happen in 2-3 business days", and Lemon Squeezy asks you to "answer the questions honestly and provide as much information as possible". A "Copy to Live Mode" option moves test products across. Its FAQ says it approves "most stores selling digital goods that can be fulfilled by Lemon Squeezy (e.g. eBooks, PDFs...)" and typically refuses services and physical goods. A refused store can reapply. Existing sellers may be asked to verify again, and payouts pause until they do.

    What you can't sell

The prohibited-products page names ebooks and PDFs as acceptable. The bans an author is most likely to meet:

    • PLR and resell-rights ebooks, and anything you lack the rights to.
    • Get-rich-quick, business-in-a-box and work-from-home products. A side-hustle ebook should read as education, not a promise of income.
    • NFT and crypto products, so a crypto investing guide is at risk.
    • Sexual content of any kind, homework or essay mills, and multi-level marketing.

If unsure, contact support with an example first: breaking the rules can get a store "placed in review or suspended without notice".

    AI-written ebooks

Lemon Squeezy has no rule about AI. Its prohibited list mentions AI only to ban "NSFW chatbots", and its terms don't mention it. That puts it with Payhip and Gumroad among the relaxed places to sell, unlike Amazon KDP, which asks you to disclose AI-generated content, or Etsy, which tightened its rules in October 2026. See which stores allow AI-written books and can you sell AI-generated books. Either way, a book you have edited and made your own sells better and draws fewer refunds.

A book that passes review starts with a good draft

    Plan my ebook

    How your ebook is delivered

A product needs only a name, a price and a file. The rest is optional:

    • Files: any type, unlimited files up to 5 GB in total per product, so one product can hold a PDF and an EPUB.
    • Images: up to 10, each up to 10 MB. Lemon Squeezy recommends 4:3, wider than a book cover, so set your cover on a background or make a mock-up with a few inside pages.
    • Variants: versions with their own price and files. Lemon Squeezy's own ebook example: "PDF only, PDF + extra resources, PDF + extra resources + video course".
    • Receipt and confirmation: editable message, button text and link, plus up to 3 extra links per product for bonus material.

Buyers can re-download any time from "My Orders", logging in with a magic link sent to their email. Upload a corrected edition and every past buyer gets it; delete a file and they lose it, so turn files off instead. Download links are "securely signed, throttled", but we found no PDF stamping or watermarking in the docs, whereas Payhip and Gumroad stamp the buyer's email on the file (none of them is DRM). License keys are for software; an ebook doesn't need them.

As on every checkout, an EPUB arrives as a file and getting it onto a Kindle is up to the reader. Fiction authors who sell direct often add BookFunnel, which connects to Lemon Squeezy; our where to sell ebooks guide has its prices, and ebook formats explains which file to offer.

Storefront, checkout, discounts, affiliates and email

A laptop on a kitchen table showing an author website for an ebook titled The Weekday Garden by Maren Holt, with a pop-up checkout panel over the page reading The Weekday Garden (PDF + EPUB), $9.99, an email field, a card number field, an Add discount code link and a Pay $9.99 button
The pop-up checkout lets a reader buy without leaving your own website.

Three ways to take an order

    • Checkout link from each product's Share panel, for a newsletter, social bio or post, with your logo, images, description and discount box shown or hidden. Copy it from the Share panel, not the address bar, which holds a single-use cart link.
    • Pop-up checkout on your own site (WordPress, Webflow, Wix and most builders): the reader never leaves your page.
    • Hosted store at your-store-name.lemonsqueezy.com, off by default and switched on under Design, with themes and your own domain through one DNS record.

Buyers can pay by card (including American Express, JCB and China UnionPay), PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, WeChat Pay, Cash App Pay or bank debit, depending on device and location.

    Pricing and promotion

    • Discount codes: percentage or fixed, per product or store-wide, with start and expiry dates and a use limit.
    • Pay what you want: a minimum and a suggested price.
    • Lead magnets: a free product in return for an email address, such as a sample chapter. Our lead magnet generator and guide to lead magnets that convert help.
    • Abandoned-cart emails: three reminders over three days, at 5% of what they win back.

    Affiliates and email

The built-in affiliate program lets you set the commission, cookie length and products, and approve each affiliate. Lemon Squeezy pays your affiliates for you, twice a month after a 30-day hold, from a $10 minimum by default, for 3% of each referred order. Its example: a $20 product with $4 VAT sold through an affiliate on 30% leaves you $11.22 after $2.78 in fees and a $6.00 commission. Gumroad also pays affiliates for you; on Payhip you pay them yourself.

Email broadcasts, segments and sign-up forms are included, and every buyer joins your subscriber list. It is free up to 500 subscribers, then $10 a month for 1,000, $24 for 3,000, $35 for 5,000 and $60 for 10,000, sending up to 10 times your limit a month after a short approval (usually 1 to 2 business days). It also connects to ConvertKit, Mailchimp and Zapier. Our ebook marketing guide covers what to send.

The help docs also describe a marketplace (products with 3 sales or $50 in sales, English listings, a flat 30% fee), but we could not open a public marketplace page on 28 October 2026. Plan as if every reader comes from you.

Step by step: from idea to your first sale

    1. Write the ebook in Inkfluence AI

Open your dashboard, describe the book in a sentence or two (who it is for and what they will be able to do after reading it), and choose the type of book and how many chapters you want. Inkfluence AI plans the outline and writes the chapters, typically 1,000 to 1,500 words each, so the chapter count is how you control the length. Edit any chapter, rewrite a passage in your own voice, and add a cover from the cover generator or your own. The AI ebook generator page shows what people make, and how to create an ebook walks through planning one.

    2. Export the files

Export a PDF and, for phones and e-readers, an EPUB. The free plan exports a PDF with a small Inkfluence AI credit; any plan or credit pack removes it and unlocks EPUB, Word and the print-ready KDP files (see exporting help). Both formats in one product cost nothing extra on Lemon Squeezy. For a workbook or planner meant for printing, a PDF alone is right; the workbook generator builds those.

    3. Prepare the listing

    • Name: specific beats short. Lemon Squeezy's own advice prefers "28 High-Resolution Watercolor Brushes for Photoshop" to "Watercolor Brushes". For a book, add the promise: "The Weekday Garden: Grow Food in 20 Minutes a Day".
    • Description: shown at checkout, so keep it short: who it is for, what is inside, the format. Our book description generator drafts one.
    • Images: a 4:3 image with your cover, plus two or three inside pages, such as the contents.

    4. Create the product in Lemon Squeezy

    1. Sign up and, if you are offered a Lemon Squeezy store, open the dashboard (it starts in test mode).
    2. Click "+" then "New Product". Enter the name, description and price, and choose "Single payment".
    3. Set the tax category to eBooks.
    4. Upload the PDF, EPUB and images. For a bundle, add variants (say "Ebook" and "Ebook + workbook") with their own files and prices.
    5. Edit the receipt: say which file to open on which device, and link to your next book or newsletter.
    6. Publish, buy it yourself in test mode, and check the email, the download and My Orders.

    5. Activate and price

Click "Activate your store", complete the questionnaire and ID check, add your bank or PayPal details under Settings, Payout, and copy your products to live mode. Price on the value of the problem the book solves, not its length. Under $10 the fixed $0.50 takes a bigger share, so ask about custom pricing. A launch discount code with an expiry date gives your list a reason to buy this week.

    6. Launch

Share the checkout link with your email list and followers, add the pop-up checkout to your site, or switch on the hosted store. Offer a free sample chapter as a lead magnet, and ask your first readers for a quote to add to the product images. Our ebook launch checklist has the full routine, and how to sell your ebook covers finding readers.

Before tax and payout costs. Payhip and Gumroad include card processing of 2.9% + $0.30; Sellfy assumes the same card rate. Etsy and Sellfy figures as in our where to sell ebooks guide, checked the same day.

Against Payhip the fee is a near tie. Payhip wins on cash flow (each sale lands in your own account immediately), PDF stamping, a full store builder with courses on its free plan, and an independent owner. Lemon Squeezy wins on worldwide tax coverage, cheaper PayPal sales and paying affiliates for you. See our Payhip review, the Payhip fee calculator and Payhip vs Etsy.

Against Gumroad Lemon Squeezy keeps about $1.09 more of a $9.99 sale, and both are merchants of record everywhere. Gumroad adds its Discover marketplace and automated email workflows, and pays out from a $100 balance. Lemon Squeezy will import your Gumroad products, customers and license keys from a sales export, usually within 3 business days. See selling ebooks on Gumroad, Gumroad vs Amazon KDP and Etsy vs Gumroad.

Against Etsy the question is buyers, not fees: Etsy has shoppers searching for planners and printables, and Lemon Squeezy brings none you can count on. With no audience and a printable product, start on Etsy (selling ebooks on Etsy) and add a direct checkout later; selling on Etsy and Gumroad shows how the routes combine.

Against Sellfy and Stan Store the difference is a $29 monthly plan instead of a cut: on a $9.99 ebook that only beats Lemon Squeezy from about 70 copies a month, and you handle your own sales tax. See selling ebooks on Sellfy, Stan Store for authors and Ko-fi for authors; for print copies and merchandise too, Shopify.

None of these is exclusive, so one ebook can sell on Lemon Squeezy, Payhip and Etsy alongside Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play. The one conflict is KDP Select, which needs the digital edition on Amazon only; see KDP Select vs going wide and our guide to publishing wide.

Put simply: Lemon Squeezy is still a fine way to sell an ebook in 2026 if you can open a store, especially with readers in many countries. Its fees are among the lowest for a platform that takes on your tax, and its affiliate and email tools are better than its software-first marketing suggests. The weak points are slow payouts, no PDF stamping and a future that belongs to Stripe's Managed Payments, so treat it as a checkout you could leave rather than a home for everything. Selling ebooks on Lemon Squeezy: FAQ

Is Lemon Squeezy still open to new sellers in 2026?

Sign-up still works, but the page now asks about your business to "recommend the best path", which may be Stripe Managed Payments rather than a Lemon Squeezy store. Existing stores keep selling, and no shutdown date had been announced on 28 October 2026.

How much does Lemon Squeezy take from an ebook sale?

5% of the order plus $0.50, with card processing included. It adds 1.5% when the buyer is outside the US and 1.5% when they pay with PayPal. A $9.99 ebook leaves $8.99 from a US card buyer, $8.84 from a card buyer abroad and $8.69 from a buyer abroad paying with PayPal, before tax.

Does Lemon Squeezy handle VAT and sales tax for ebooks?

Yes. It is the merchant of record for every sale, so it adds the right sales tax or VAT at checkout and reports and pays it. You choose the eBooks tax category on each product. Income tax on what Lemon Squeezy pays you is still yours.

When does Lemon Squeezy pay out?

Twice a month: payouts are created on the 1st and 15th, each sale is held 13 days, and money is sent on the 14th and 28th, arriving in 1 to 5 days. The minimum is $50. Payouts to a US bank are free; other banks cost 1%, PayPal $0.50 (US) or 3% capped at $30.

Can I sell AI-written ebooks on Lemon Squeezy?

Its prohibited-products list and terms have no rule about AI-written content. They do ban PLR and resell-rights ebooks, get-rich-quick and work-from-home schemes, sexual content, crypto and NFT products, and anything you do not hold the rights to.

    What is Stripe Managed Payments?

Stripe's own merchant-of-record product, built by the Lemon Squeezy team. It adds 3.5% to Stripe's card fee (2.9% + $0.30 in the US) and handles tax in 80+ countries, but is open to businesses in 35 countries after a review, takes no PayPal, and sells through payment links without file hosting.

Is Lemon Squeezy cheaper than Payhip?

Slightly, above about $6.90: a $9.99 card sale leaves $8.99 on Lemon Squeezy and about $8.90 on Payhip's free plan. Below $6.90 Payhip keeps more. Payhip pays you the moment a sale clears and stamps PDFs; Lemon Squeezy covers tax everywhere.

Does Lemon Squeezy stop people sharing my PDF?

It uses signed, rate-limited download links, but we found no PDF stamping in its docs. Payhip and Gumroad stamp the buyer's email on the file; none of them is DRM.

Can I use Lemon Squeezy if I live outside the US?

Yes, if you can be paid into a bank in one of the roughly 120 countries on its list or a verified PayPal account in one of 200+ countries. Indian sellers without a pre-approved Stripe account must use PayPal. Buyers can pay from everywhere except 18 blocked countries.

Can Inkfluence AI publish straight to Lemon Squeezy?

No. Inkfluence AI publishes straight to Gumroad and Etsy on Creator and Premium. For Lemon Squeezy you export the PDF and EPUB and upload them, which takes a few minutes.
