Etsy's New AI Rules (October 2026): What Changed for Digital Download Sellers

Etsy tightened its AI rules on 22 October 2026. AI-made digital downloads are still allowed with disclosure. What changed: bot-generated listings are banned, recipes, patterns and instructions must be your own work, and physical items need an unedited photo. Here is what it means for ebook, printable and pattern sellers, with a checklist for your existing listings.

Quick Answer

On 22 October 2026 Etsy tightened its AI rules, but AI-made digital downloads are still allowed, including ebooks, journals, planners and AI art, as long as you play a clear creative role and disclose that AI was used. Four things changed: bot-generated listings with no human involvement are banned; functional guides (recipes, patterns and instructions) must be your own work, shown with a real result; physical items need at least one unedited photo, while digital downloads should show a preview or excerpt of what buyers get; and buyers can now report misleading AI images, though Etsy says reports won't trigger immediate enforcement at first. Disclose, preview, and publish every listing yourself.

For two years Etsy's answer on AI has been "allowed, if you disclose". On 22 October 2026 it sent every seller an email titled "Important updates to AI use on Etsy" and published a new Listing Image Requirements policy the same day. The headline on seller forums was "Etsy cracks down on AI". The detail is more measured: most AI-assisted digital products are as allowed as they were last week, and the new limits land on three specific things. This guide goes through each change in Etsy's own words, then what it means for the products digital sellers actually list.

Disclosure up front: Inkfluence AI is our product. It writes and illustrates books, and it can publish them to Etsy and Gumroad. Everything here about Etsy's rules comes from Etsy's own announcement and policy pages, quoted where it matters; we link them at the end.

Published 22 October 2026, the day of Etsy's announcement. We will update this page as Etsy adds detail.

What changed, in Etsy's words

Etsy framed the update around buyer trust. In its announcement, Etsy says many active buyers can't tell which items involve AI-generated content, and that this has become "a top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy". The changes fall into three groups: policy, enforcement and new features.

Change What Etsy says Who it affects
Unedited photo"Your listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background." Exceptions apply by item type.Physical products. Digital downloads have their own rule (below).
Accurate photosAll photos "must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive". Editing, including with AI, is fine for lighting, colour, cropping and backgrounds.Everyone.
Functional guidesFor patterns, recipes or instructions, "the information buyers rely on to create or use your item must be your own work, not generated by AI." Listings must show "an actual result made using your instructions".Pattern, recipe and instruction sellers.
Bot-generated listings"Bot-generated listings without any human involvement aren't allowed. These listings will be removed and may also result in your shop being removed from Etsy."Anyone auto-publishing listings in bulk.
Image guidanceWhen Etsy detects AI-generated images as you add them to a listing, it shows tips. It plans to extend this to existing listings over time.Everyone adding images.
New report reasonMembers can report listings that "may use misleading AI imagery". These reports "won't result in immediate enforcement action" to start.Everyone.
Refund responsibilityIf a listing doesn't meet the image rules and a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different, "you may be responsible for refunding the buyer".Everyone.

What did not change matters as much. In the same announcement Etsy says it will "continue to allow AI-generated art when sellers play a clear creative role in what they create and are transparent about their process", giving the example of "a fantasy scene based on a seller's original prompt or inputs and produced by an AI generator". Disclosure is still required, and you still "cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation".

Four printed pages of an ebook laid out as a listing preview on a linen tablecloth: the cover of The Quiet Garden Journal by Rosa Lindqvist, a Contents page listing Morning pages, Planting plans and Seasonal notes, an interior page headed Morning pages, and a Planting plans grid, with a sticky note reading listing preview: cover + 3 pages
What Etsy asks of most digital downloads: a visual preview or excerpt of the content. The cover and a few real pages do it.

Digital downloads: still allowed, with a preview

The unedited-photo rule is the one that worried digital sellers most, and it mostly isn't about them. Etsy's Listing Image Requirements policy has separate rules by product type, and digital downloads get their own:

"Some digital items, like audio files, don't have visual elements. For those listings, you may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images, as long as it doesn't mislead buyers about what they're purchasing. All other digital downloads should include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers will receive."

For an ebook, journal, planner or printable, that means your listing images should show what the buyer actually downloads: the cover, and ideally a few real interior pages. A mockup of the book on a tablet or a desk is fine alongside them, as long as it shows the real cover and doesn't promise something the file doesn't contain, such as a hardcover when you sell a PDF. Print-on-demand items have a separate rule that allows authorised stock mockups.

Two practical habits follow from the "accurate representation" rule, which applies to every listing:

  • Make the first image the clearest true picture of what they get. Etsy calls this out as a best practice because it's the image buyers see first.
  • Say in the description if images were edited with AI. Etsy recommends it, and it costs one line.

What you can still sell, by product type

Here is how the update lands on the digital products sellers list most. "Allowed" assumes you disclose AI use and played a real creative role, which was already required.

Product After 22 October 2026 What to do
Ebooks: fiction, kids' stories, devotionals, memoirAllowedDisclose AI use; show the cover and sample pages.
Journals, planners, workbooks with promptsAllowedShow real pages of the file, not an idealised render.
Non-fiction ebooks (advice, business, personal growth)AllowedDisclose; keep the description accurate to the contents.
AI art, wall art, colouring pagesAllowed with a clear creative roleDisclose; never describe it as hand-drawn or handmade.
Recipe booksRecipes must be your ownUse recipes you developed and cooked; include a real photo of a dish you made.
Craft patterns (crochet, knitting, sewing)Pattern must be your ownWrite and test it yourself; show a real finished piece. An AI image can't be the only result shown.
Step-by-step instructions and guidesInstructions must be your ownThe steps buyers rely on must come from you; show a real result where one exists.
Audio downloads (audiobooks, meditations)AllowedRepresentative imagery, including AI images, is fine if it doesn't mislead.

The line Etsy draws for guides is about function: the parts a buyer relies on to make or use something. A cookbook's recipes, a pattern's rows and a tutorial's steps have to be yours. You can still use AI for the parts around them, such as layout, an introduction or tidying your own wording, as long as the working content is your own and the listing is honest about it.

A printed crochet pattern titled Little Fox Amigurumi, pattern by June Hart, with numbered rounds of instructions, next to the real finished orange crocheted fox made from it, a ball of yarn and a hook, while a hand photographs the finished fox on a phone
For patterns, recipes and similar items, Etsy wants at least one real, unedited photo of something made with your instructions.

For recipe and pattern sellers: what "your own work" looks like

The functional-guide rule is the one that changes most for some shops, so it is worth being concrete. Etsy does not define every edge, but its wording points to a clear standard: the information a buyer relies on must come from you, and you must be able to show it working.

  • Recipes: develop or adapt them yourself, cook them, and note the quantities and timings you actually used. Photograph at least one dish you made from the book.
  • Craft patterns: design and test the pattern yourself, ideally have one other person make it from your notes, and photograph a finished piece you made with it.
  • Instructions and tutorials: the steps should come from your own experience doing the thing. Where there is a physical result, show a real one.
  • Where AI can still help: layout, page design, an introduction, tidying the wording of instructions you wrote, translating your own text, or a cover. The working content is what has to be yours.
  • Keep evidence: dated photos of your test runs and your own notes make an appeal straightforward if a listing is ever removed by mistake.

What counts as a "bot-generated listing"

Etsy's wording is specific: listings "without any human involvement". That targets tools and scripts that generate products and publish them to a shop automatically, often in bulk, with nobody checking what goes live. It is the one change with the heaviest stated penalty: removal of the listings, and possibly of the shop.

Using software to help you create a listing is not the same thing. What Etsy is asking for is a person in the loop: someone who checks the title, description, price and images, and chooses to publish. If a tool you use publishes listings straight to your shop without you seeing them, change that setting or change the tool.

In Inkfluence AI, Etsy listings are created as drafts in your shop. You review them, tick Etsy's "With an AI generator" box under "How it's made", and publish them yourself on Etsy. The description already carries a line saying the book was created with AI assistance, which you can edit.

Make the book, review the listing, publish it yourself

Inkfluence AI writes and illustrates the book, then creates an Etsy draft or a Gumroad product with the file attached and an AI disclosure line in the description. Nothing goes live until you publish it.

Five listings, checked against the new rules

Rules are easier to apply to real cases. Here are five typical digital listings, what the update means for each, and the fix where one is needed.

1. A cosy mystery ebook, written with AI help, cover made with an AI image tool

Verdict: allowed. It is a creative work, not a functional guide.

Check: "With an AI generator" ticked, a disclosure line in the description, the real cover as the first image, and an excerpt image of the opening page so buyers see the writing they are paying for.

2. A 90-day gratitude journal PDF with prompts and ruled pages

Verdict: allowed. Prompts invite the buyer to reflect; they are not instructions to make or use something.

Check: show real pages from the file. A render of a leather-bound journal on a café table is fine as a secondary image, but it must not be the only picture if the buyer gets a printable PDF.

3. A "30 Easy Air Fryer Dinners" recipe ebook written by AI

Verdict: not allowed as it stands. Recipes are a named functional guide, and these were not written by the seller.

Fix: replace the recipes with ones you developed and cooked, and add a real, unedited photo of at least one dish made from the book. Or sell this version somewhere other than Etsy.

4. A crochet pattern with an AI-generated photo of the finished toy

Verdict: not allowed if the pattern came from AI, and not allowed in any case if the AI image is the only result shown.

Fix: use a pattern you wrote and tested, crochet the toy, and photograph it. You can keep a styled image alongside, but Etsy says AI-generated images "cannot be the only images used to show the finished result".

5. Two hundred colouring-page bundles published overnight by a script

Verdict: the content may be allowed; the method is not. Listings created and published "without any human involvement" are banned, and the shop is at risk.

Fix: create listings as drafts, review each one, and publish them yourself. Fewer, better listings are also what Etsy's search rewards.

Description lines you can copy

Etsy's update adds one new recommendation to the existing disclosure requirement: say so when listing images were edited with AI. A short, plain line does both jobs. Adapt any of these to your product:

Ebook or journal: "This book was written and designed with the help of AI tools, then edited and arranged by me. The listing photos show the real cover and pages from the file you will download."

AI art or colouring pages: "Created from my own prompts and ideas using an AI image generator, then selected and edited by me. Images show the exact designs included."

AI-edited photos: "Lighting and backgrounds in some photos were adjusted with AI editing tools. The first photo is unedited."

Your own recipes or patterns, AI-assisted layout: "Every recipe in this book is my own and was tested in my kitchen. I used AI tools to help with layout and formatting only. The dish photos are my own, unedited."

Keep it true to what you actually did. A disclosure that overstates your role is the kind of misrepresentation Etsy's policy names.

What happens if a listing breaks the rules

  • Misleading images: Etsy may remove the listing, and if a buyer opens a case because the item was materially different, you may have to refund them. Repeat problems can escalate "up to and including shop removal".
  • Bot-generated listings: removed, and the shop may be removed.
  • AI-generated functional guides: no longer allowed, so expect removal under the existing policy process.
  • Reports of misleading AI imagery: collected to start with, not enforced immediately.

If a listing is removed, Etsy says you can appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, "just as you would for other policy violations".

A checklist for your existing listings

Etsy says listings that don't meet the new image requirements "need to be updated", so a quick audit is worth an afternoon:

  1. Disclosure: every AI-assisted listing has "How it's made: With an AI generator" ticked and a line in the description saying how AI was used. Our Etsy AI disclosure guide covers the exact fields.
  2. Preview: each digital listing shows the real cover and, for books, journals and planners, a few real interior pages.
  3. Accuracy: no image shows something the file doesn't contain, and the first image is the clearest true picture.
  4. Guides: any recipe, pattern or instruction product uses your own working content and shows a real result made with it. If it doesn't, rewrite it or remove it.
  5. Publishing: no tool publishes to your shop without you reviewing the listing first.
  6. Edited photos: if any image was edited with AI, say so in the description.

The California rule coming in January 2027

Etsy's announcement also points sellers to a California law, SB 1050, taking effect on 1 January 2027. Under it, listing images or videos may count as advertisements and "may require a clear disclosure if they prominently feature an AI-generated synthetic performer": a realistic AI-generated person who isn't an identifiable real individual. If your promo images or book videos show AI-generated people and may reach buyers in California, plan to label them. Etsy suggests talking to your own legal counsel about which laws apply to you.

Other places to sell AI-assisted ebooks

Etsy is still a strong channel for journals, planners, printables and illustrated books, and nothing in this update closes it to AI-assisted digital products. If you sell guides that rely on AI-written instructions, or you simply want more than one storefront, the usual alternatives are:

Inkfluence AI publishes the same book to Etsy and Gumroad from one Publish page, and prepares the files for Amazon KDP, so you can choose a channel per book.

One book, every storefront

Write it, give it a cover, then list it on Etsy or Gumroad, or download the KDP files, from the same Publish page. Free to start with 5 chapters.

FAQ

Did Etsy ban AI-generated products in October 2026?

No. Etsy says it will continue to allow AI-generated art and products when sellers play a clear creative role and are transparent about their process. What it banned is bot-generated listings without human involvement and AI-generated functional guides such as recipes, patterns and instructions.

Can I still sell AI-written ebooks on Etsy?

Yes. Disclose AI use, show a preview or excerpt of the content, keep the listing accurate, and publish it yourself. The exception is an ebook whose value is a set of recipes, patterns or instructions: that working content must be your own.

Do digital downloads need an unedited photo?

No. The unedited-photo rule covers most physical products. Digital downloads should include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers receive; items with no visual element, such as audio files, may use representative imagery, including AI images, if it doesn't mislead.

Can I use AI images in my listing photos?

Yes, as long as every image accurately represents what the buyer receives. For physical products, keep one required photo unedited. Etsy recommends noting in the description if images were edited with AI.

What is a functional guide on Etsy?

Etsy's examples are patterns, recipes and instructions: products where buyers rely on the information to make or use something. That information must be your own work, and the listing must show a real result made with it.

Are bot-generated listings the same as listings made with an AI tool?

No. Etsy bans listings "without any human involvement". A tool that drafts a listing which you review and publish yourself keeps a person in the loop; a tool that publishes listings to your shop automatically does not.

Will a buyer report get my listing removed?

Not immediately, according to Etsy. The new "misleading AI imagery" report reason will at first help Etsy understand members' concerns rather than trigger enforcement. Removals still happen through Etsy's normal policy process, which you can appeal from Shop Manager.

Do I have to update my old listings?

Yes, if they don't meet the new Listing Image Requirements. Etsy says listings that don't meet them need updating, and you may be responsible for refunds if a buyer receives something materially different from the listing.
