Chapter 1
The Clockwork Attic
Milo Reed balanced on a wooden box and brushed a silver cobweb from the attic window. Dust tickled his nose. He sneezed so softly that the old teddy bear beside him seemed to nod.
The attic was his favorite place in the house. It smelled of dry wood, warm blankets, and the apples his mother kept downstairs. Rain tapped the roof. Bedtime was close, but Milo still wanted to find his red toy car.
“There you are,” he said, spotting it beneath a sheet.
He reached for the car, but his fingers touched something cold and round. A clock stood behind the boxes. Milo had never seen it before. It was as tall as a wardrobe, with brass wheels turning behind glass.
Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
A tiny door in the clock swung open.
Milo leaned closer. Inside was a little staircase, curling down through the gears. A brass key rested on the first step.
“Just one look,” Milo whispered.
He climbed in.
The steps felt smooth beneath his socks. Gears clicked above his head. One wheel turned, then another. The clock gave a bright, musical chime, and the attic floor slid away like a rug pulled by a puppy.
Milo grabbed a rail.
“Stop, please!”
The clock did not stop. It hummed and spun. Golden numbers danced around him. Then the gears became still.
Milo blinked.
The staircase was gone. In its place stood a tall wall of shining wheels. He tried to squeeze between them, but a gear rolled gently across the way and blocked him.
“I need to get home before bedtime,” he said.
He tried the left side. A small wheel popped out with a cheerful click. He tried the right side. Another wheel slid down.
Milo sat on the wooden floor. It was warm under him, and the clock smelled like pennies.
“I am not getting anywhere,” he said.
Then he noticed the brass key in his hand. Its teeth matched a tiny keyhole beside the gears.
Milo turned it.
The wheels moved together, making a path. He stepped through and found a door at the end. He pushed it open.
A house waited beyond it, bright with lamps and soft yellow walls. It looked like his home, but everything seemed taller. A blue coat hung by the door. A pair of large shoes rested beneath it.
Milo hurried to a mirror.
The face looking back was not eight years old.
It had his brown eyes, his round nose, and a small smile he knew. But the face was older, with lines beside the eyes and a little gray in the hair.
Milo touched the glass.
“I’m forty,” he whispered.
Behind him, the clock gave one gentle chime. Milo was safe, but home was no longer the home he knew.
