Uphill Again After Betrayal

The hospital corridor smelled of disinfectant and wet coats when Leila Hartman understood that no one could tell her where her husband was.

She was thirty-six years old, sitting beneath a strip of harsh fluorescent light, with her two small children pressed against her sides. One child slept with a cheek against her coat. The other held her hand so tightly that Leila could feel each small finger digging into her skin. Her own clothes were cold from the night air, and the paper cup of coffee beside her had gone untouched.

A nurse had already asked her to wait. A police officer had already asked her the same questions twice.

His name. His age. What he had been wearing. Where he had last been seen. Whether he had taken money, identification, medicine, or a coat.

Leila answered as carefully as she could, but every answer seemed to open another empty space. She knew the sound of her husband’s name. She knew the shape of his shoes by the door and the places he kept his things. She knew what her children expected when they asked when he would come home.

She did not know where he was.

“Is he here?” she asked the nurse.

The nurse glanced toward the closed doors at the end of the corridor. “We have not confirmed that.”

The words were gentle, but they gave Leila nothing to hold. Not confirmation. Not denial. Only another place to wait.

Her younger child stirred. “Mama, can we go home?”

Leila looked down at the small face turned toward her. The child’s hair smelled faintly of shampoo and sleep. Behind them, a cart rattled over the floor. Somewhere beyond the doors, a telephone rang and rang before someone answered it.

“Soon,” Leila said.

She did not know whether soon meant an hour, morning, or a life she could not yet imagine.

At the police station, the chairs were hard, the walls were pale, and the air carried the stale smell of old paper and overheated machinery. Leila sat with both children close while an officer moved forms across the desk. The children had become quiet. The older one watched every adult who passed, as if a familiar face might appear among them.

Leila kept her coat buttoned even though the room was warm. Her hands would not stop shaking.

The officer placed a page in front of her. “This is the missing-person report. Read it before you sign.”

She looked at the lines. The words seemed to move. Missing. Last known location. Personal description. Contact information.

“What happens after I sign?” she asked.

“We enter the information and follow up on the details you gave us.”

“When?”

“We will contact you when we have something.”

Leila raised her eyes. “What if you do not find anything?”

The officer paused. “We continue checking.”

It was an answer, but it was not reassurance. It did not explain how she was supposed to feed two children, get them dressed, answer their questions, or sleep while the truth remained outside her reach.

She signed her name.

The pen felt heavy. Her signature looked unfamiliar at the bottom of the page, as though another woman had written it. She had believed that paperwork belonged to ordinary days - school forms, bills, appointments, permission slips. Now her name sat beneath a report that could not tell her whether her husband was alive, injured, lost, or somewhere beyond the reach of anyone looking for him.

The older child leaned against her arm. “Is Daddy coming back?”

Leila’s throat tightened. The officer lowered his gaze, giving her a privacy that did not make the question easier.

“I do not know,” she said.

The child stared at the floor.

Leila had wanted to protect them from fear, but uncertainty had entered the room before she could stop it. It sat beside them in the station. It followed them into the hospital. It waited with them in every hallway and under every buzzing light.

An officer gave her a number to call. A hospital clerk gave her another form. Someone explained that she should keep her phone nearby. Someone else asked whether there were relatives who could help with the children.

Leila wrote down every number.

Her handwriting grew smaller as the day continued.

At the hospital, she returned to the waiting room with the children and a folder full of papers. The folder bent at one corner from being carried under her arm. Inside were names, numbers, dates, and questions she had not been able to answer. The children shared a packet of crackers. The dry crumbs gathered on their laps and fell onto the floor.

A television mounted in the corner played without sound. People came and went through the double doors. A man in a wheelchair was pushed past them. A woman held a bouquet of flowers wrapped in cloudy plastic. A child cried somewhere down the hall, and the sound made Leila’s stomach twist.

She kept expecting someone to approach her with certainty.

No one did.

When a doctor finally stopped near the chairs, Leila stood so quickly that the folder slipped from her hand. Papers scattered across the floor.
