Writing with AI
10 step-by-step guides for writing with ai in Inkfluence AI.
How to use AI to write a chapter
Describe what the chapter should cover. AI Assist writes a full draft.
1 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
Steps
On an empty chapter, click the purple `AI Assist` button in the centre of the editor. On any chapter with content, click the `AI button` (sparkle icon) in the left sidebar instead. Either opens the same panel.
Describe what the chapter should cover, pick a length (brief, standard, detailed, comprehensive), and hit `Generate`. You get a full draft in seconds. Tone is auto-matched to your book's genre.
How to rewrite selected text with AI
Highlight any passage, open AI Assist, tap a chip or type an instruction. Apply or undo.
1 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
Steps
Highlight the sentence or paragraph you want changed, then click the `AI button` in the left sidebar. The "Rewrite with AI" dialog opens with a "Rewriting: “...”" strip at the top so you can see exactly what will be rewritten.
Pick a one-click chip under "Or pick a starting point", or type your own instruction in the textarea (e.g. "make it more vivid", "shorter and punchier", "match a teen reader's voice"). Click `Rewrite`. When the result appears, click `Apply` to replace your selection.
The six quick chips
- Make it clearer and more concise
- Shorter and punchier
- Tighten the prose
- Add a concrete example
- More conversational tone
- Fix grammar and flow
Instant AI edits from the selection toolbar
Highlight any text and a small toolbar appears: Proofread, Rewrite, Shorten, and more. Preview first, then apply.
1 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
How it works
Highlight a sentence or paragraph in the editor and a small toolbar appears above your selection. Pick `Proofread`, `Rewrite`, `Shorten`, `Expand`, `Softer`, or `Punchier`, or click `Custom…` to type your own instruction (e.g. "make it rhyme" or "mention the lighthouse").
The result appears as a preview in a card, never directly in your chapter. Click `Replace selection` to swap your highlighted text for the new version, `Insert below` to keep both, or `Try again` for another take. Close the card and nothing changes.
Proofread vs the rewrite actions
Proofread sits apart from the other actions for a reason: it only corrects spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and keeps your wording and voice exactly as written. The rewrite family (Rewrite, Shorten, Expand, Softer, Punchier) deliberately changes your prose. If a passage is already correct, Proofread returns it unchanged.
Chat with an AI that knows your book
Open AI Assist and switch to Chat. Ask anything: it already knows your chapters, outline, and characters.
2 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
No setup, it already knows your book
Open the AI panel from the sparkle icon in the left sidebar and switch to the `Chat` tab. There is nothing to paste in or configure: the assistant is grounded in your book's outline, description, story details, and the chapter you have open, so you can ask "what's the weakest part of this chapter?" or "brainstorm three directions for the ending" and get answers about YOUR book, not generic advice.
Asking it to write something
Ask for prose ("write two options for a stronger opening line") and the reply arrives as separate option cards, each with an `Insert into chapter` button. Nothing touches your manuscript until you insert one; regular discussion stays in the chat.
You can also ask it to answer as one of your characters, which is a quick way to test whether a character's voice holds up.
Get an editorial review of your chapter or book
The Review tab reads like an editor: what to fix, where, and why, each with a one-click patch.
2 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
Reviewing a chapter
Open the AI panel from the sparkle icon in the left sidebar and switch to the `Review` tab, then click `Review this chapter`. You get a list of findings, ordered by importance: the exact passage, what is wrong, why it costs the reader, and a drop-in fix. Click `Apply fix` to patch that passage in place, or `Dismiss` to skip it. Nothing changes unless you apply a fix.
Reviewing the whole book
Click `Review my whole book` and the editor reads every chapter, then writes you an editorial letter: an honest overall verdict, the themes that matter most across the manuscript, and the highest-impact next step. Below the letter, each chapter shows its own findings; open a chapter from the list to apply its fixes. Long books take a few minutes, and you can keep writing while it runs.
How to continue writing where you left off
Cursor at the end of your last paragraph, AI Assist, tap "Continue writing from where I left off".
1 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
Steps
Place your cursor at the end of your last paragraph (no text selected, otherwise `AI Assist` opens in rewrite mode). Click the AI button in the left sidebar. With the chapter not empty, `AI Assist` shows quick prompt chips. Tap `Continue writing from where I left off` (or "Continue the scene from where I left off" if you are in a fiction book). Or type your own instruction like "add another example" or "build tension here". Click Generate.
AI uses the chapter content as context so the new paragraph reads in your voice. Generate as many times as you like until one fits.
How to change the tone of AI output
Tone is driven by your book's genre. Change genre for the whole book, or rewrite individual passages in a new tone.
2 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
Key takeaways
Whole book
Tone is auto-derived from the book's genre. Change it in `Settings`.
Single passage
Highlight text and use `AI Assist` rewrite for a different tone on that paragraph.
Four base tones
storytelling, professional, educational, friendly. Auto-picked from genre.
Whole-book tone: change the genre
AI writes in a tone that matches your book's genre. There is no separate tone dropdown; the genre you picked when you created the book drives it.
- Open the book in the editor.
- Click the `Settings` (gear) icon in the left sidebar.
- Change the `Genre` dropdown to the one that fits the voice you want. The field hint reads "Controls AI assistant tone and output style".
- Click `Save`. Future AI generations on this book will use the new tone.
How genre maps to tone
The mapping AI uses behind the scenes:
- storytelling: Fiction, Kids Fiction, True Crime, Biography. Narrative, scenic prose.
- professional: Business, Marketing, Technical Guide. Clean, authoritative.
- educational: Cookbook, Study Guide, Lesson Plan, How-To Guide. Instructional, step-by-step.
- friendly: every other genre (default). Warm, conversational.
Tone for a single passage
To restyle just one paragraph (e.g. make a section punchier or more conversational without changing the whole book), highlight it and open `AI Assist`. Because text is selected, `AI Assist` opens in rewrite mode.
- Quick chips: "More conversational tone", "Tighten the prose", "Shorter and punchier", and others (varies by genre).
- Custom prompt: type any instruction, e.g. "make it more formal", "warmer voice", "drier and more academic".
How to fix grammar with AI
One-click fix via the "Fix grammar and flow" chip, or type your own instruction.
1 min read · Updated 2026-08-30
Steps
Highlight the paragraph (or sentence) you want cleaned up, then click the `AI button` in the left sidebar. Because text is selected, AI Assist opens in rewrite mode with a "Rewriting: ..." strip showing what will change.
Tap the `Fix grammar and flow` quick chip (no typing needed) or write your own (e.g. "fix grammar and punctuation, keep my voice"). Click `Rewrite`. Compare the original to the rewrite and click `Apply` to replace the selection. Especially handy after voice dictation or if English is not your first language.
How to write a book in another language
Prompt in your language, and the story bible, chapters, and audiobook all follow. The app's own controls stay in English.
1 min read · Updated 2026-07-23
Key takeaways
Prompt in your language
Type your idea directly in the language you want. Regional variants work too, e.g. Canadian English or Mexican Spanish.
Story bible matches
Point of view, characters, objects, and audience generate in that language.
Chapters write in-language, app stays English
Interface labels like `1 of 6 chapters written` don't translate.
Audiobook auto-detects
No language picker needed, narration matches the book.
Write in the language you want
To get a book in another language, describe it in that language. The prompt itself is the control, there is no language menu to hunt for.
- Start a new book and choose `Write a Book with AI`.
- Type your prompt in the language you want, e.g. "Hund, der ein Abenteuer erlebte."
- The story bible generates in the same language, point of view, characters, key objects, and audience all appear in German.
- Chapters write in German as they generate. The app's own controls stay in English, e.g. `Writing your chapters`, `1 of 6 chapters written`, "Design your book cover while you wait."
- Converting to audiobook, no language selection needed, narration auto-detects German from the book itself.
Supported languages
Native generation works in 30 languages, including:
- Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch
- Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Turkish, Polish
- Arabic, Hindi, Hebrew, Greek, Ukrainian, Bengali, Tamil
- Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian
Already wrote it in English?
If a book already exists, you do not need to regenerate it. Use `Translate` from the book card menu to turn it into a brand new book in another language while keeping the original untouched. See "How to translate your book into another language" for the steps.
How to review your outline before the AI writes the book
On manual setup, edit the chapter outline first, then the AI writes every chapter to match.
1 min read · Updated 2026-07-24
Edit the plan before the full write
When you create a book through manual setup (`New Book`, then pick a format and describe your idea), the AI builds a chapter outline and pauses to show it to you before writing the full book. Rename any chapter, reorder them, remove ones you do not want, or add your own. When it looks right, click `Write the book` and the AI writes every chapter to match.
Quick Start (the "Describe your idea" box on the home page) stays one prompt to finished book, with no pause. The outline review is only on the manual setup path, for when you want more say over the structure.
Fiction: your cast carries through
For fiction and romance, any characters you added in Story setup show on the review screen, so you can confirm the AI has the right cast before it writes. It is the surest way to make sure your main characters and their names come through exactly.
