The Lantern Path to Tommy’s Party
Tommy The Turtle carried a basket of lanterns along the winding path through the pumpkin patch. His friends walked beside him, ready for his Halloween party.
Tommy wore a friendly pumpkin cape over his shell. It was soft and orange. A little bell on the cape went jingle-jangle with each step.
“Look!” Tommy said. “The party clearing is just ahead.”
The lanterns made a warm, golden trail. Their light shone on pumpkins, leaves, and tiny white flowers. The air smelled like baked apples. Crickets sang in the grass.
Then - whoosh!
A gust of wind swept through the patch. Three lanterns bobbed up and away. One rolled behind a pumpkin. Another slipped under a pile of leaves. The path grew dim.
Tommy stopped. His friends stopped, too.
“Oh,” Tommy said softly. “I wanted everyone to see the way.”
He picked up the lantern near the pumpkin. Then he searched under the leaves. His friends helped, but the last lantern was nowhere to be seen.
“We can stay close,” Tommy said. “I know this path.”
He moved slowly around the pumpkins. His bell jingled. The path twisted left, then right. Tommy placed the lanterns on low stones so their light could reach farther.
“Follow my cape,” he said. “It is bright orange!”
The friends held on to the edge of his cape. Step by step, they walked together. When the path turned, Tommy stopped and checked the next pumpkin. When a root poked up, he pointed it out.
Soon, soft party music floated through the air. The friends reached the clearing.
“Hoora - ” Tommy began.
He looked back. The party entrance was dark. Without the missing lanterns, the gate did not glow.
Tommy set down the basket and let out a small sigh. Then his friends gathered close.
“We are here,” one friend said.
“And we can make more light,” said another.
Tommy smiled. The party table was bright with candles, and the pumpkin cape gave a cheerful splash of color at the entrance. Everyone stepped inside safely.
Tommy felt glad, but he kept looking at the dark path behind them. Somewhere in the pumpkin patch, one little lantern was still missing.
