Chapter 1

The Circus Gate

Tommy The Turtle blinked at the bright circus lights. Red flags danced above the gate, and happy music went toot-toot, tum-tum.

Beside him, his friends held the picnic blanket. Tommy smiled and took one slow step. Then another. The ground felt warm under his little feet. The air smelled like sweet popcorn.

“Stay together,” Tommy said.

The entrance was busy. People moved like a gentle river. Colorful signs waved overhead. Tommy tried to follow, but a big balloon floated in front of him. When it drifted away, his friends were several steps ahead.

“Wait, please!” Tommy called.

His friends stopped near the gate. Tommy hurried as fast as a turtle can hurry. He reached them with a soft puff.

“We are here,” said a friend. “But the tent is that way!”

A bell rang. The crowd began to move again. Tommy looked left, then right. So many signs pointed in so many ways. His shell bumped a small wooden post.

“Maybe we should hold hands,” Tommy said.

They made a little line. Tommy held the blanket. His friends walked slowly beside him. Together, they followed the striped flags toward the big tent.

“Red flag!” Tommy called.

“Red flag!” his friends called back.

Step by step, they passed the popcorn stand and the ticket table. The music grew louder. The tent rose above them like a giant, friendly umbrella.

Inside, the seats were soft and round. Golden lights twinkled overhead. Tommy found a cozy spot near the front, where he could see the ring. His friends sat close beside him.

“We made it!” they cheered.

Tommy’s smile grew wide. Then he looked down.

The picnic blanket was not in his lap.

He checked beside his shell. He checked under the seat. No blanket.

“Oh dear,” Tommy said softly. “I think I left it by the gate.”

His friends looked toward the entrance. The circus music played on, bright and bouncy.

“We are safe,” said a friend. “We can look after the first song.”

Tommy nodded, though he still felt a tiny worry in his tummy. The cozy seats held them close, and the warm lights shone above.

“Together,” Tommy said.

“Together,” his friends answered.

The show was about to begin, but Tommy kept thinking of the blanket waiting by the gate. Friends can make a big place feel small, one kind step at a time.
