Chapter 1
Tommy Finds a Little Sailboat
Tommy’s toes brushed the soft grass beside the pond. A little sailboat rested at the water’s edge. Its white sail wiggled in the breeze, like a tiny waving flag.
Tommy leaned closer. The boat smelled of warm wood and pond water. Its rope was tied to a small post, and its paint shone in the sun.
“Hello, little boat,” Tommy said. “I wonder how you move.”
He touched the smooth side with one green foot. The boat bobbed gently.
Tommy looked at the shallow water. It was calm near the shore. He climbed in slowly, one foot at a time. The boat dipped, then popped back up.
“Plop!” said Tommy, as his shell settled on the seat.
He held the little tiller. It felt like a wooden spoon in his hand. Tommy gave it a small wiggle.
The boat turned a tiny bit.
Then the breeze blew.
Whoosh!
The sail puffed out, and the boat slid away from the grassy bank.
“Oh!” Tommy said. He reached for the rope, but it was already out of reach. The boat moved over the cool, shining water.
Tommy did not feel afraid. But he did feel surprised. The shore looked farther away than it had before.
“I thought I was only going a little way,” he whispered.
He pulled the tiller left. The boat kept gliding. He pulled it right. The boat wiggled and moved on.
Tommy took a slow breath. He looked at the sail. He looked at the breeze making little ripples on the pond.
“Maybe the wind is helping,” he said. “But I need to learn what to do.”
The boat carried him toward a quiet cove. Green reeds stood along the water, and lily pads floated like tiny plates. The breeze grew soft there. The boat slowed with a gentle bump against the muddy bank.
Tommy climbed out and held the boat’s rope. This time, he tied it to a sturdy root.
He looked back across the pond. The grassy shore was far away now.
“I found a boat,” Tommy said, touching the tiller. “And the wind found me.”
The cove was safe and still. Tommy sat beside the little sailboat and listened to the water tap, tap, tap against its side. He was ready to learn, one small turn at a time.
