Chapter 1
The Road Beside the Meadow
Tommy the Turtle tucked his feet beneath him as the meadow grew quiet. Soft grass brushed his shell. The air smelled of clover and cool earth. Above him, the first stars blinked awake.
Then Tommy saw a silver glow beyond the meadow.
The moon shone on a pond. Its water looked like a big, round mirror. Tommy’s mouth felt dry.
“Just one little sip,” he whispered.
He moved toward the meadow’s edge. But there, between Tommy and the pond, lay a wide road. It hummed and whooshed. Cars rolled past, their lights shining like bright toys.
Tommy stopped.
He waited for the road to grow quiet. One car passed. Then another. Then three more, one after the other.
“Not yet,” Tommy said.
He crept close to the edge, but the sounds seemed to come from every side. His toes touched the hard ground beside the road. A puff of wind tickled his nose.
Tommy took one small step forward.
A car rolled by with a gentle whoosh.
Tommy quickly pulled his head into his shell. The car moved on. Nothing bad happened, but Tommy did not like the busy road.
He backed away.
“I must not hurry,” he said. “Hurrying would make a muddle.”
He looked left. A car came by.
He looked right. Another car came by.
Tommy tried to find a quiet space between them, but the road kept humming like a busy bee. He felt small beside it.
Then he noticed a soft patch of grass behind a low bush. It was well back from the road. The bush made a cozy little roof, and the grass felt cool beneath his shell.
Tommy settled there and listened. The road still made its busy sound, but he was safe and snug.
“I can wait here,” he said. “Tomorrow, I will ask Wren to help me find the safest crossing.”
The moon shone over the road and the pond. Tommy took a slow breath. His dry mouth could wait a little longer.
Being brave means staying safe and waiting for help.
With the bush beside him and the soft meadow under him, Tommy closed his eyes. Soon, he would find a safe way to reach the moonlit pond.
