Coco Visits Theme Park

Coco’s blue bandana sat snug around his neck as he stepped toward the theme park gates. Beyond them, bright flags waved in the warm morning breeze. Music twinkled from somewhere inside, and a cheerful bell rang over the happy chatter.

Coco was a small white poodle, but today he felt ready for something big. He lifted one paw, then another, across the smooth path. The air smelled like warm popcorn, sweet apples, and fresh grass. His tail gave a quick, excited twitch.

“Here we go,” Coco whispered.

The gates were tall and bright, with painted stars along the top. People walked through them with smiles, holding maps and little cups of lemonade. Coco stayed close as he passed beneath the arch. His blue bandana brushed softly against his fur.

Inside, the park seemed to stretch in every direction.

To the left, a merry-go-round turned in a circle, its wooden horses bobbing up and down. To the right, colorful cups spun beneath striped umbrellas. Far ahead, a roller coaster climbed high into the sky. Its cars rushed along the track with a cheerful whoosh, then curved around a hill.

Coco stopped.

The roller coaster looked very, very tall.

A loud whistle blew nearby. Coco’s ears lifted. Then a drum beat began, and a bright train rolled past with people waving from their seats.

“Whee!” someone called.

Coco’s paws felt warm. He wanted to wave back, but he was busy looking at the ride map in front of him.

The map was nearly as wide as Coco was tall. It showed blue paths, green gardens, yellow food stands, and many rides marked with stars. Coco leaned closer. There were so many places to choose from that his nose almost touched the paper.

“Where should I start?” he wondered.

He looked toward the merry-go-round. It was smaller than the roller coaster, and its music sounded soft and bright. Then he looked back at the tall track. The cars climbed, dipped, and twisted like a ribbon in the sky.

Coco wanted to be brave. He also wanted to know if he was big enough.

A friendly park worker stood beside the map. She wore a yellow hat and held a little flag. Coco looked up at her.

“Excuse me,” he said. “Which way is the merry-go-round?”

The worker pointed down a path lined with tiny blue flags. “That way, little friend. Follow the blue flags, and you will find it.”

Coco thanked her and started down the path. He took three steps, then stopped again. A group of visitors hurried past, and one of them carried a giant balloon shaped like a smiling sun. The balloon bobbed above Coco’s head.

Coco ducked beneath it.

“Oh!” he said. The balloon floated safely away. Coco peeked after it, then gave a small laugh. The park was not trying to make him nervous. It was simply full of sounds, colors, and moving things.

He followed the blue flags. Each one fluttered as he passed. The path curved around a garden filled with purple flowers. Coco smelled their soft, sweet scent. A fountain splashed nearby, and cool drops of water touched his nose.

He felt calmer.

Then a sign appeared.

MERRY-GO-ROUND THIS WAY.

ROLLER COASTER THIS WAY.

The arrows pointed in opposite directions.

Coco stood between them.

The merry-go-round music floated from one path. The roller coaster rumbled from the other. Coco’s tail twitched toward the music, but his eyes stayed on the tall track.

“What if I start with the roller coaster?” he asked himself.

He imagined the cars rushing up the hill. He imagined the wind fluffing his white fur. He imagined his blue bandana flying behind him like a little flag.

That sounded exciting.

It also sounded like a lot.

Coco took the roller-coaster path.

The path rose gently toward the ride area. The sounds grew louder with every step. Wheels clicked along the track. People laughed. A bell chimed each time a car returned to the station.

Coco’s paws slowed.

At the bottom of the hill stood a tall sign with pictures of riders. Under one picture were the words: “Please check the height mark.”

Coco looked at the line painted on the sign. Then he glanced at his own small body.

He stretched as tall as he could. His ears stood up. His paws pressed firmly on the ground.

Still, he was not sure.

A park worker nearby noticed Coco studying the sign. She knelt so she could speak with him.

“Wondering about the ride?” she asked.

Coco nodded. “I want to try something exciting. But what if I am too small?”

“That is a good question,” she said kindly. “We always check the ride rules first. If a ride is not the right size for you, there are many other fun rides to enjoy.”

The worker smiled. “Being brave can mean asking, checking, and choosing what feels right.”

Coco thought about that. He had believed bravery meant climbing onto the biggest ride right away. But the worker’s words made his chest feel lighter.

He stepped toward the height mark.

A park helper placed a small measuring board beside the sign. Coco stood still while the helper checked. The board made a soft tap against the floor.

Coco waited.
