Chapter 1

Tommy Finds a Shareable Shell

Tommy the Turtle held the shiny shell close to his chest. Sunlight danced across it, making little gold spots on the sand.

The pond made soft plip-plop sounds nearby. Warm sand tickled Tommy’s toes. He had found the shell beside a smooth stone, and now he wanted to keep it all to himself.

“It can be my special shell,” Tommy whispered.

He turned it over and over. It felt cool and smooth, like a tiny cup. Tommy smiled. He pictured the shell beside his sleeping place, shining in the moonlight.

Then a small voice came from behind him.

“May I hold it too?”

Tommy turned. His friend, Pip the Duck, stood at the pond’s edge. Pip’s feet made little marks in the sand.

Tommy hugged the shell tighter. “I found it,” he said.

Pip looked at the shell. “It is very shiny. I would like to see it.”

Tommy looked down. His claws pressed into the sand. He wanted to say no. The shell was his find. But Pip’s eyes looked hopeful, not pushy.

Tommy tried to hide the shell under his flipper. It slipped and rolled toward the water.

“Oh!” Tommy cried.

He reached out quickly. Pip gently stopped the shell with one webbed foot. The shell rested safely on the sand.

Tommy let out a little puff. “Thank you.”

Pip smiled. “We can look at it together.”

Tommy picked up the shell. He held one side, and Pip held the other. Sunlight flashed between their noses.

“It looks like a tiny moon,” Pip said.

“And a little bowl,” Tommy said.

They took turns turning it in the light. Tommy felt a warm, happy wiggle inside. The shell was even more fun when Pip smiled too.

At last, Tommy placed the shell in Pip’s feet. “You may hold it for a moment,” he said.

Pip held it carefully. “Thank you, Tommy.”

Tommy smiled, but his eyes stayed on the shell. What if Pip walked away with it? What if he did not bring it back?

Tommy shuffled closer on the soft sand. The pond whispered beside them, and the shiny shell glowed between his friend’s feet. Sharing had begun, but Tommy still had a worry to carry.
