Chapter 1
Tommy Finds the Train Ticket
Tommy the Turtle rested his little feet on the sunny train platform. The warm stone felt nice beneath his toes. Above him, a big clock went tick-tock, tick-tock.
His friends sat on a wooden bench beside him. They held their small bags and watched the shiny train waiting nearby. Tommy smiled. The train hummed softly, like a sleepy bee.
“Is it time?” one friend asked.
“Almost,” said Tommy. He touched the ticket tucked in his pocket. “We have the right ticket. We will all ride together.”
A soft breeze slipped across the platform. It lifted a paper from Tommy’s pocket.
“Oh!” cried Tommy.
The ticket twirled like a tiny white leaf. It danced past the bench and slid across the smooth ground. At that very moment, the train doors opened with a gentle chime.
Tommy hurried after it. His shell bumped the bench with a little clunk.
“Wait, ticket!” he called.
His friends climbed down to help. One friend looked under the bench. Another peeked beside a flower pot. The ticket was nowhere there.
Tommy’s smile faded. The train gave a quiet toot.
“We cannot get on without it,” said Tommy.
His friends looked at the open doors. They looked at Tommy. No one spoke for a moment.
Tommy took a slow breath in. He smelled warm bread from the station shop. Then he breathed out and felt his shoulders relax.
“Let us stay calm,” he said. “We can ask for help.”
Together, they followed the ticket’s path. It had slipped past a yellow line and stopped near the edge of the platform. Tommy moved carefully and stayed behind the line. The train stood safely on its track, humming and shining.
“There it is!” said Tommy.
The ticket rested near the platform edge. It was close enough to see, but too far for Tommy’s short legs to reach. He stretched his neck. He stretched one foot.
“Almost,” he whispered.
The train doors chimed again. Tommy’s friends gently held his shell so he would not move too close.
“We will find a safe way,” they said.
Tommy looked at the ticket, then at the friendly station helper walking toward them. The ride might take a little longer, but everyone stayed together, warm and safe beneath the big clock.
Tick-tock went the clock as Tommy waited for help.
