Chapter 1

The Mop Closet Steam Cloud

Milo Bramble tugged the mop closet door before the first bell. It did not move.

“Come on,” he whispered. “Open nicely.”

The door gave a tiny creak, then stopped. Inside, buckets wobbled against one another. A mop handle poked through the crack like a wooden finger. Something dripped. Something else squeaked.

Milo checked the quiet corridor. Brindlewick School smelled of floor soap, cold stone, and yesterday’s porridge. No children. No teachers. Perfect.

He planted both boots and pulled.

The door popped open one inch. A bucket rolled forward.

Milo caught it with his knee. Another bucket tipped onto his foot. A third bucket slid down from a shelf and landed on his hat.

BONK.

“Steady,” Milo told the hat.

He pushed the bucket back inside. His thick caretaker’s coat felt warm. Too warm. A little puff of steam slipped from his nose.

Milo quickly pinched his nostrils shut.

Being a secret dragon was easy when he remembered not to sneeze.

The mop closet gave a loud wooden groan.

Milo pulled harder. The door flew open. He stumbled backward, and his long, hidden tail - tucked beneath his coat - whipped out and knocked a mop sideways.

The mop slapped a bucket.

The bucket slapped another bucket.

The whole closet began to wobble like a tower of jelly.

Milo grabbed the shelf. “Nobody move!”

A mop fell onto his head.

He sneezed.

“Achoo - FWOOSH!”

A cloud of hot, silver steam blasted down the corridor. It smelled faintly of toast. The windows fogged. A row of shiny shoes vanished behind the mist. Somewhere near the office, a bell gave one confused ding.

Milo blinked.

His tail had shot backward and landed inside a blue cleaning bucket.

He tried to step forward.

The bucket came with him.

He stepped again.

Clonk.

“Please,” Milo muttered. “Do not make this worse.”

The bucket rolled over his boot. Milo grabbed a mop to balance himself. The mop handle pressed a red button on the wall.

The sprinklers dribbled one tiny drop.

Plip.

Then they stopped, as if even they had decided this was too silly.

Milo twisted left. The bucket twisted right. He twisted right. The bucket rolled left. He hopped in a circle, dragging it behind him like a very stubborn turtle.

At last, the bucket popped free.

Milo landed on the floor with a soft thump. The closet door stood wide open. The mop handles stuck out at every angle. Steam curled along the ceiling.

He had done it.

Then he noticed the smoky trail behind him.

It led from the closet straight to his caretaker’s cart.

Milo brushed his coat, straightened his hat, and smiled at the empty corridor.

“Nothing unusual,” he said.

From the cart came a tiny puff.

Milo’s tail twitched beneath his coat. Morning classes were about to begin.
