Chapter 1

The Broom-Cupboard Smoke Cloud

Arthur Bell was halfway through his morning rounds when his nose began to tickle.

He stopped beside the school noticeboard, one hand on his mop bucket and the other gripping a feather duster. The halls were quiet. The children had not arrived. Perfect. Arthur only needed to fetch his mop, polish the front steps, and keep his dragon scales safely hidden under his brown caretaker’s coat.

“Not now,” he whispered.

The tickle grew.

Arthur hurried to the broom cupboard. It was a tiny room packed with buckets, brushes, soap, and one very lumpy mop. He slipped inside and pulled the door almost shut.

Almost.

His tail was in the way.

Arthur sucked in his tummy, tucked his tail beneath a box of sponges, and reached for the mop. A brush poked his ear. A bucket pressed his knee. Something cold and wet dripped onto his shoe.

“Achoo!”

A puff of silver smoke burst from his nose.

It filled the cupboard at once.

Arthur blinked. The shelves vanished. The buckets vanished. Even his own boots vanished.

“Oh, crumbs.”

He waved his hands. This only stirred the smoke into a spinning cloud. A bottle of floor cleaner tipped over. A mop head flopped onto his head like a soggy wig.

Arthur grabbed the door handle.

It would not turn.

His tail had wrapped around a broom.

He pulled the broom. The broom pulled back. A bucket clanged. Three dustpans slapped the wall. Then a stack of toilet rolls rolled down his back and landed in the mop bucket with soft plops.

Arthur tugged harder.

The door flew open.

Smoke poured into the hallway beneath it, thick and gray. It curled along the floor like a sleepy cloud. Then it climbed the walls and spread across the ceiling in a great, wobbly smudge.

Arthur stumbled out wearing the mop head, two dustpans, and a toilet roll crown.

At that very moment, Head Teacher Mrs. Crumble came around the corner.

She stared at the smoke.

Arthur stared at the mop head.

“Good morning,” he said.

Mrs. Crumble pointed at the ceiling. “Why is the hallway smoking?”

“Cleaning,” said Arthur. “Very powerful cleaning.”

A tiny puff escaped his ear.

Mrs. Crumble’s eyebrows rose. “The school inspector arrives on Friday.”

Arthur looked up at the gray ceiling. A black mark shaped rather like a dragon stretched above him.

“Friday?” he squeaked.

“Friday,” said Mrs. Crumble.

Arthur hurried away with his mop at last. Behind him, one last smoke ring floated from the cupboard and bumped gently into the inspection notice.

It left a sooty circle around the word IMPORTANT.
