Chapter 1
The Pebble Path Litter Trap
Tommy the Turtle was heading home from a picnic. The warm sun rested on his shell, and the pond made soft, plip-plop sounds nearby.
A small wrapper lay beside him on the pebble path. Tommy had carried it from his snack. He wanted to reach the grassy bank, where the path felt smooth and cool.
“Almost there,” Tommy said.
Then a breeze whooshed past.
The wrapper skittered across the pebbles. It caught on a little twig, then slipped free. Tommy reached out with one foot, but the wrapper danced away.
“Oh!” he cried. “Wait for me!”
The path was narrow. Pebbles bumped under Tommy’s feet. Bits of grass, paper, and string were tangled along the edges. Tommy tried to walk around them, but a long piece of string brushed his shell.
He stopped.
The string had caught between two pebbles. Tommy pulled gently. It came loose with a tiny snap. He moved on, holding the wrapper close to his shell.
A leaf fluttered into the pond.
Then a paper cup rolled after it.
Tommy watched the water carry them toward the reeds. The wrapper in his foot suddenly felt very important.
“Rubbish can travel,” he whispered. “It can go into the pond.”
He looked at the clear water. Small fish flicked their tails below the shining surface. The thought of rubbish floating there made Tommy’s head droop.
He tucked the wrapper safely under his chin and walked slowly. One pebble wobbled. Tommy steadied himself. Another wrapper brushed his toes, but he did not drop his own.
At last, Tommy reached the grassy bank. The grass was soft and smelled sweet after the sun. He smiled and looked for the bin near the picnic table.
Then he saw a blue wrapper drifting toward the water.
“Oh, no,” Tommy said softly.
He placed his snack wrapper beside the bin. Then he turned toward the blue wrapper. The pond was calm, but the little piece of rubbish kept floating closer to the reeds.
Tommy took one careful step along the bank.
He knew where his next journey would lead. For now, his wrapper was safe, and so was the path behind him. Tommy watched the blue wrapper bob on the water and promised to help the pond, too.
A small piece of rubbish can travel a long way, so Tommy carried his wrapper until it found a bin.
