Chapter 1
Tommy’s Quiet Pond Path
Tommy The Turtle walked slowly toward his favorite pond nook. His little feet made soft pats on the cool ground. The pond smelled fresh, like wet leaves after rain.
Usually, Tommy liked this path. He liked the green grass and the tiny yellow flowers. But today, his head felt heavy. He did not feel like singing. He did not feel like smiling.
“I just want a quiet place,” Tommy whispered.
The path beside the pond was muddy from the rain. Tommy took one careful step. Squish! His foot sank into the mud.
“Oh, dear,” he said.
He tried another step. A long vine curled across the path. Tommy lifted one foot over it, then another. His shell brushed a bush with a soft swish. The path seemed twisty and strange.
Tommy pulled his feet close. “Everything feels hard today.”
He tried to go around the mud. Plop! One back foot slipped into a soft puddle. Mud dotted his shell like little brown buttons.
Tommy looked at the pond. His quiet nook was just ahead, under a wide, shady leaf. He kept going, even though his eyes felt watery.
At last, he reached the nook.
But the ground was wet and squishy. Mud covered the soft patch where Tommy liked to rest. When he sat down, his shell wobbled.
“Squish,” said the mud.
Tommy stood up again. His feet felt cold. His favorite place did not feel cozy at all.
He looked around. The pond made a gentle plip-plop sound. A dragonfly hummed nearby. Still, Tommy felt alone.
“I came here to feel better,” he said softly. “Now I do not know where to go.”
A small leaf floated down and landed on his head. Tommy gave a tiny sigh. Then he carried the leaf to the edge of the nook and sat beside it, on a dry stone.
The stone was not soft, but it was warm from the sun. Tommy tucked in his feet and watched the water sparkle.
He was still sad, but he was safe. And soon, from somewhere along the muddy path, came a faint little sound.
Tommy lifted his head. Maybe he would not be alone for long.
