Curious Fox At School

Mina Foxwell held her small backpack as she stepped into school. Its soft straps tickled her shoulders. The hall smelled like crayons, warm bread, and clean floors.

“Your first day,” said her teacher, Ms. Maple. “Stay with me, Mina.”

Mina nodded. But the hall was full of bright doors, painted stars, and shiny hooks. A red arrow pointed toward the cafeteria. Mina followed it, her paws making little taps on the floor.

Children hurried by with lunch boxes. Mina turned left, then right. She saw a blue door and a green door. She sniffed the air. The warm bread smell seemed close, like toast waiting on a plate.

Then Mina spotted a small brass bell beside the cafeteria doors.

“Is this the lunch bell?” she whispered.

A paper sign had slipped to the floor. Mina bent to pick it up. Her tail brushed the bell rope.

Ding-a-ling!

The sound danced down the hall.

Doors opened. Children cheered. “Lunch!”

Mina’s ears popped up. She had found the cafeteria at last! But then she saw Ms. Maple hurrying toward her.

“Mina,” Ms. Maple said gently, “that bell is for the grown-ups to ring.”

Mina held the paper close. Her paws felt warm. “I did not mean to ring it,” she said. “I was only trying to help.”

“I know,” said Ms. Maple. “You were curious. Curiosity is good. We also ask before we touch school things.”

Mina looked at the happy children filing into the cafeteria. The bell had helped everyone find lunch, but Mina worried she had broken a rule.

“Am I in trouble?” she asked.

Ms. Maple knelt beside her. “You made a mistake, and you told the truth. That is a good start. Next time, ask first.”

Mina nodded. She placed the paper on the bell table. Then she walked beside Ms. Maple through the cafeteria doors. The room was bright and cozy. Chairs scraped softly, and soup smelled delicious.

At lunch, Ms. Maple let Mina sit near her. Mina opened her backpack and found a red apple inside.

“Tomorrow,” Mina said, “I will look with my eyes first.”

Ms. Maple smiled. “That sounds wise.”

Mina took a crunchy bite. The hall no longer felt too big. She had found the cafeteria, and she had learned that curious paws should be gentle paws.
