Chapter 1

The Boiler-Room Dragon Discovery

“Class 3B is where?” Ollie Finch asked the empty corridor.

The corridor answered with a drip.

Ollie looked at his crumpled map. The lines crossed like spaghetti. His new school had three staircases, two halls, and one statue of a goat wearing a crown. None of it matched the map.

A bell rang somewhere above him.

“Oh no,” Ollie whispered. “I’m going to be late on my very first day.”

He hurried past a door marked BOILER ROOM. Warm air puffed around his ankles. It smelled of dust, metal, and burnt toast.

Then something clanged inside.

Ollie stopped.

“Hello?” he called.

A deep voice grumbled, “Go away.”

That did not sound like a pipe.

Ollie pushed the door open a crack. Inside was a maze of thick pipes. They curled over the ceiling and dipped behind barrels. At the far end stood a large, grumpy man in a brown work coat. He held a mop in one hand and a tiny teacup in the other.

“Are you lost?” he asked.

“Yes,” said Ollie. “But I’m trying very hard not to be.”

The man sighed. “Follow the blue pipe. Then turn left at the hot-water tank.”

A cloud of gray smoke puffed from his nose.

Ollie blinked.

The caretaker sneezed.

“ACHOO!”

A small orange flame shot from his mouth and lit the end of the mop.

Ollie stared.

The caretaker stared at the mop.

“Oh, bother,” he said.

He dropped the mop into a bucket. Steam burst up with a loud hiss. The caretaker’s brown coat split down the back.

Two golden wings popped out.

Ollie’s map fell into a puddle.

The caretaker pulled off his cap. Under it were two small horns. His face stretched longer. His shoes cracked apart, and bright claws poked through.

In three wobbly seconds, the grumpy caretaker became a very large, very tired dragon.

He was greenish-brown, with droopy wings and a beard of smoke.

“I’m retired,” he said. “Mostly.”

Ollie pointed at the pipes. “You’re a dragon.”

“Quietly.”

The dragon tried to squeeze back into his coat. His tail knocked a valve. The valve spun. A shower of warm water sprayed across the room.

Ollie grabbed a bucket. The dragon grabbed a towel. Together they chased the water, slipping and sliding between the pipes.

“Do not step there!” cried the dragon.

Ollie stepped there.

His shoe landed on a glowing patch of coal.

“Yow!”

He hopped onto the other foot. That one landed on another coal.

Soon Ollie was hopping through the corridor like a toast slice in a frying pan. Each step left a tiny black footprint with a smoking edge.

The dragon covered his face with one claw.

At last, Ollie reached the blue pipe. It led straight to the main hall.

“Your footprints,” said the dragon.

“I can explain them,” Ollie said.

From the main hall came the sound of a door opening.

The dragon quickly became a grumpy caretaker again, though one wing stuck out of his coat.

“Friday’s inspection,” he muttered. “No one can know.”

Ollie nodded. “I’ll keep your secret until after Friday.”

He hurried toward his classroom, leaving warm, singed footprints behind him.

The dragon watched them lead into the main hall.

“Excellent,” he said. “A trail.”
