The Hidden Power

The warmer above Lina’s bassinet flickered from white to blue.

Dr. Vale looked up from the folded blanket in her hands. “That’s not the light.”

Across the delivery room, Mara Voss clutched the rails of the bed while the final monitor shrieked beside her. Rain tapped the narrow windows of St. Brigid Maternity Ward, and beyond the glass, Rivergate’s towers blinked through the storm. The city was three floors below, bright and restless, unaware that something impossible had just opened its eyes.

Lina screamed.

The sound cut through the ward. Every metal instrument on the counter jumped at once.

Mara saw it happen. So did Tomas.

Their daughter’s tiny fists clenched, and a pale radiance spilled between her fingers. It was not the yellow glow of the warmer. It was colder, almost silver, threading over Lina’s skin in fine branching lines. The lines pulsed with each cry.

The monitor beside Mara burst into static.

“Doctor?” a nurse called from the hall.

Tomas moved before anyone else could. He caught the blanket from Dr. Vale and threw it over Lina, covering her from crown to feet.

The light vanished beneath the cloth.

For one second, the room went still except for the rain and Mara’s ragged breathing.

Then the warmer cracked.

A hairline split raced across its plastic shield.

Dr. Vale stared at it. “What was that?”

“Our daughter,” Tomas said, too quickly.

Mara reached for Lina. Her arms trembled from exhaustion, but the need inside her was sharper than pain. “Bring her to me.”

Dr. Vale hesitated. She was young enough that the silver badge on her chest still looked too large. “We need to run a full neonatal scan. The monitor failure could indicate - ”

“No scans,” Tomas said.

The doctor’s eyes narrowed. “Mr. Voss - ”

“No scans,” he repeated, quieter this time. “Not until she’s stable.”

Under the blanket, Lina twisted. The silver lines climbed her wrists. The fabric lifted as if a small wind were trapped beneath it.

Mara saw the shape and understood nothing except that her child was frightened.

“She needs me,” she said.

That, at least, broke the doctor’s hesitation. Dr. Vale carried Lina across the room and placed her against Mara’s chest. The instant skin touched skin, the light flared.

Every bulb in the delivery room went dark.

A startled cry rose from the corridor. Footsteps rushed closer.

Mara wrapped both arms around Lina. Heat surged through her palms - not burning, but immense, like a current passing through deep water. The bed rails vibrated beneath her fingers. Somewhere in the walls, pipes groaned.

“Lina,” Mara whispered. “Lina, please.”

The baby’s cry softened.

The lights snapped back on.

Tomas stood between the bed and the open door. A nurse had appeared there, one hand on the frame, her face pale.

“Power outage?” the nurse asked.

“Faulty circuit,” Tomas said.

The cracked warmer gave a sharp pop behind him.

The nurse glanced toward it. “That doesn’t look like a circuit.”

“It was already damaged,” Dr. Vale said.

Tomas looked at her.

The doctor’s gaze shifted to Lina, then to the split plastic shield. She had seen the light. She had felt the room change. There was no way to turn that into a faulty circuit.

Mara pressed her cheek to Lina’s damp hair. “She’s breathing,” she said. “That’s what matters.”

The nurse stepped closer. “We should take the baby to the nursery.”

“No,” Tomas said.

This time, the word carried enough force to stop her.

The nurse looked from him to Mara. “Sir, the nursery is where newborns go.”

“And she stays here.”

“Mr. Voss, we have other patients. You can’t keep blocking the ward.”

A second nurse appeared behind the first. Then another. The room seemed to shrink around them. Too many eyes. Too many polished badges, too many hands ready to reach for Lina and carry her somewhere Tomas could not control.

Under Mara’s gown, Lina’s fingers opened.

A thread of silver slipped across her knuckles.

Mara covered it with her hand.

Tomas saw the movement. His face changed.

“We’re taking her home,” he said.

Dr. Vale gave a disbelieving laugh. “She was born less than five minutes ago.”

“She’s healthy.”

“You don’t know that.”

“We know enough.”

The baby began to cry again.

This cry was different. It rose in a jagged pitch that made the ceiling fixtures tremble. A stack of metal trays rattled on the counter. The nurse nearest the door clapped both hands over her ears.

Mara felt the current building inside Lina. It pressed outward through her ribs, searching for somewhere to go.

“She’s scared,” Mara said.

“Give her to me,” Tomas said.

Mara looked at him. “What are you going to do?”

“Keep her quiet.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No,” he said. “It’s the only answer we have.”

Lina’s blanket began to glow.

Tomas crossed the room and pulled the privacy curtain shut. The fabric swept around them, cutting off the corridor and the watching nurses. It did nothing to muffle the baby’s cry.

“Dr. Vale,” he said, “tell them the warmer malfunctioned....
