Chapter 1
Tommy Meets the Alphabet Night
Tommy the Turtle settled beside the pond, where the soft grass felt cool beneath his feet. The evening sky turned pink and gold. Frogs sang a sleepy song, and the reeds swayed with a gentle swish.
Beside Tommy lay a neat row of letter cards. His friends had brought them for Alphabet Night. Tommy smiled as he touched each card.
“A, B, C,” he whispered. “So many letters!”
He moved the cards along the pond path. Zuri Zebra helped him make the row longer. But when Tommy reached the middle, he stopped.
“Oh!” he said. “A card is missing.”
Zuri leaned close. “Which one?”
Tommy looked at the cards. They slid apart on the soft grass. One card turned sideways. Another slipped under a leaf.
“I am not sure,” Tommy said. “Let’s start at A.”
Together, they read the cards slowly.
“A, B, C, D…” Tommy said.
The row reached a blank space.
Tommy blinked. “There should be a letter here.”
Zuri tapped her hoof. “Maybe it is hiding.”
They looked under a smooth stone. No card.
They peeked beside a little flower. No card.
Tommy lifted a wide leaf. A tiny beetle crawled out, but there was no letter card.
“Maybe we should stop,” Tommy said. His eyes felt heavy. “It is almost bedtime.”
Zuri gave him a kind smile. “We can look once more. Friends help friends.”
Tommy sat up tall. He listened to the pond. He heard the frogs. He heard the reeds swish. Then he noticed a small mark in the damp mud.
“What is that?” he asked.
Zuri bent down. “It looks like a footprint.”
Tommy followed the marks with his eyes. They went past the letter cards and curled toward the tall reeds.
The missing card was still not in Tommy’s row. But now they had a clue.
Tommy picked up the cards and held them close. “We will follow the little prints tomorrow night,” he said.
Zuri nodded. “And now we can rest.”
The moon shone on the quiet pond. Tommy tucked the cards beneath a flat stone so they would stay safe. Then he and Zuri walked home slowly, with the tiny footprints waiting by the reeds.
Tommy felt sleepy, but his mind was full of letters.
Friends make hard puzzles easier to solve.
