Chapter 1
The Waxed-Floor Dragon Slide
Milo Finch polished the last brass handle on the trophy case and checked the corridor.
Empty.
Good. The boiler room was only at the other end. If he crossed quickly, no one would see his dragon tail.
He tucked the tail beneath his long caretaker’s coat. It wriggled at once.
“Stay still,” Milo whispered.
The floor shone like a frozen pond. Mrs. Puddle, the head teacher, had ordered it waxed before breakfast. It smelled of lemons and trouble.
Milo took one careful step.
Squeak.
His boot slid forward.
Milo windmilled his arms. His tail popped out and swished left. His boots swished right. For one splendid second, he stood sideways, like a crab wearing a coat.
Then the corridor carried him away.
“Not the display!” Milo cried.
His tail bumped a table. A model of Bramblewick School spun around. Milo grabbed it. The model spun faster. A tiny bell rang.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
He let go and slid past the school banners.
“Stop!” he called.
The floor did not stop. Floors rarely listened.
Milo tried to steer with his mop. The mop shot between his feet. He sailed over it, landed on his bottom, and zoomed toward the trophy case.
The glass doors grew larger.
“Please be a cupboard,” Milo whispered.
It was not a cupboard.
BUMP!
Milo slid straight through the open door and landed among silver cups, golden plates, and one enormous blue ribbon. The ribbon wrapped around his nose.
A cup tipped onto his head.
Ting.
A plate rolled beneath him.
Whirr.
His tail curled around a shelf and held tight.
Milo froze. Outside the case, his mop skittered past like a frightened spider.
“Mr. Finch?” called a voice.
It was Pippa from Class Three. Her shoes squeaked as she came closer.
Milo pulled the blue ribbon over his face. “Just checking the trophies.”
“From inside?”
“Very thorough checking.”
Pippa peered through the glass. “Are you stuck?”
“Not at all.”
His tail tugged. The shelf creaked.
“Perhaps slightly.”
Pippa opened the door wider. Milo wriggled, bumped three cups, and caught the mop with one hand. His tail gave a final angry flick.
Ffffft!
A tiny orange spark popped from its tip. It scorched a glowing curly mark across the waxed floor.
Milo stared at it.
Pippa stared too.
“That is a very fancy skid mark,” she said.
Milo climbed out, carrying the cup on his head. “It needs cleaning before school starts.”
Behind him, the glowing mark pulsed like a sleepy firefly. Then the mop began to smoke.
Milo sniffed. His nose twitched.
“Oh no,” he said. “Not a sneeze.”
The boiler room suddenly seemed very far away.
