Chapter 1
The School Path Puddle
Tommy had packed his school bag and was ready to go. A little apple sat inside. So did his blue book and a soft pencil case. He pulled the bag onto his shell and smiled.
The morning air smelled of wet grass. Birds chirped by the pond. Tommy walked along his usual muddy path, tap, tap, tap, toward the school gate.
Then he stopped.
A wide puddle spread across the path. It was as big as a little pond. Brown water shone in the sun. Tiny drops made soft plip-plop sounds.
“Oh dear,” said Tommy. “My school things must stay dry.”
He looked left. Tall grass tickled his shell. He looked right. A bush blocked the way. Tommy took one small step toward the puddle, then pulled back.
His bag brushed the water.
Drip!
One corner of the bag felt damp. Tommy frowned and held it up high.
“I can go around,” he said.
He tried the grass. His feet sank into the mud, and his bag bumped against a twig. He tried the bush. Scratchy leaves covered his face.
“Not this way,” Tommy said, brushing off a leaf.
He sat beside the path and listened. Plip-plop. Plip-plop. Then he noticed some flat stones near the pond. They made a little line across the water.
Tommy picked up the first stone and set it down with care. He placed another beside it. Then one more.
“Step, step, step,” he whispered.
His feet were steady. The stones felt cool and smooth. Tommy crossed the puddle without getting his book wet. On the far bank, he gave a happy little wiggle.
But when he lifted his bag, the strap slipped down his shell.
Plop!
The bag landed in the soft mud.
Tommy picked it up quickly. The bottom was muddy, but his apple and book were safe. He tightened the loose strap as best he could and held the bag close.
“I found a way across,” he said. “Now I need to fix this strap.”
The school gate was still ahead. Tommy walked on slowly, keeping one foot on the dry path. His bag bounced a little, but he kept it close.
The puddle was behind him now. Tommy felt proud of his stepping stones and careful feet. He was still ready for school, even with a muddy bag and a loose strap.
Sometimes a new path helps us move forward, even when the old one is covered in water.
