Chapter 1

Tommy Finds a Crabby Note

Tommy’s little feet made soft plops in the cool mud beside Willow Pond. The sky was turning pink and gold. Reeds swished in the evening breeze, and frogs sang sleepy songs.

Tommy was ready for bed, but something gray near the reed bed caught his eye. It was a crumpled note. One corner peeked from beneath a smooth stone.

Tommy picked it up with his mouth and smoothed it with one careful foot. The words were big and dark:

“GO AWAY. THIS POND IS NO FUN.”

Tommy blinked. The pond was usually full of splashes, songs, and friendly smiles. Now it felt as quiet as an empty toy box.

“Who wrote this?” Tommy whispered.

He looked around. No one answered. A small breeze tickled his shell. The note slipped from his foot and landed in the mud.

Tommy tried to clean it. He dabbed it with a soft leaf. That only made a brown smudge. He tried to hold it flat with a pebble. The pebble rolled away with a tiny plunk.

“Oh dear,” Tommy said.

Then he heard a grumpy sound behind the reeds.

“Humph!”

Tommy peeked through the tall green stems. A little shape sat with its back turned. Tommy could not see the face.

“Hello?” he called softly.

“Go away,” said the voice.

Tommy felt his head tuck halfway into his shell. The words sounded just like the note. He wanted to say, “That is not nice!” But he stopped. Maybe the writer was not trying to be bad. Maybe something felt wrong.

Tommy placed the note on a dry leaf. Then he pushed a round berry beside it.

“I found this,” he said. “I can listen if you want to tell me about it.”

The shape did not turn around. Its toes rubbed the dirt in slow circles.

“I do not want to talk,” the voice said.

“That is okay,” Tommy replied. “I can wait.”

He waited beside the reeds. The pond smelled fresh and green. A tiny frog hopped onto a lily pad with a soft plip.

At last, Tommy made a plan. He would ask one gentle question. He would not guess. He would listen.

“Are you feeling left out?” he asked.

The shape grew still. Then it gave a small, unhappy huff.

Tommy did not know the answer yet, but he knew what to do next. He would come back in the morning and ask gently again.

The note still looked cranky, and the hidden friend still seemed upset. But Tommy stayed nearby until the first stars blinked above Willow Pond.
