A quick safety sheet for anyone caring for your parrot

Use this page before you feed, clean, open the cage, or change anything in the bird’s space.

The golden rule

If you are unsure, do not guess.

Call the owner or avian vet.

Before you begin

[ ] Read the owner’s written instructions.

[ ] Check the owner’s phone number is easy to find.

[ ] Check the avian vet number is easy to find.

[ ] Know where the travel cage or carrier is kept.

[ ] Know whether out-of-cage time is allowed.

[ ] Keep other pets away from the bird area.

Food and water safety

[ ] Give only the food listed by the owner.

[ ] Refresh water as instructed.

[ ] Remove spoiled fresh food.

[ ] Do not offer new foods.

[ ] Do not offer food from your plate.

[ ] Do not feed avocado, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, onion, garlic, salty snacks, or sugary foods.

[ ] Call the owner if the bird refuses food or water.

Air and household safety

[ ] No candles.

[ ] No incense.

[ ] No essential oil diffusers.

[ ] No air fresheners.

[ ] No aerosol sprays.

[ ] No perfume or strong fragrance near the bird.

[ ] No smoke.

[ ] No strong cleaning fumes.

[ ] No non-stick cookware fumes.

[ ] Keep the bird away from kitchens.

Cage and room safety

[ ] Doors closed.

[ ] Windows closed.

[ ] Fans off.

[ ] Other pets away.

[ ] Unsafe objects removed.

[ ] Cage doors secure.

[ ] Food and water bowls secure.

[ ] Bird area calm and predictable.
