Chapter 1
Sam’s Happy Family Night
Sam laughed so hard that the storybook wobbled in Dad’s hands.
“Why did the teddy bear bring a ladder?” Dad asked.
Sam wiped happy tears from their eyes. “I don’t know!”
“To reach the top shelf!” Dad said.
Mom made a funny face. “That bear should have asked for help.”
Sam giggled again. The living room felt warm and soft. A lamp glowed beside the couch. The blanket smelled like clean laundry, and the pages of the storybook made a gentle shuffling sound.
It was bedtime, but Sam wanted the cozy night to last forever.
“Can we read one more story?” Sam asked.
Mom tucked the blanket around Sam’s knees. “One short story.”
“And one more joke,” Dad added.
Sam smiled. This was their favorite part of the day. A story. A silly joke. A hug from Mom and Dad. Everything felt just right.
Then Sam noticed something small.
Mom and Dad looked at each other. Mom’s smile faded a little. Dad closed the storybook, though the story was not finished.
“Did the teddy bear forget the ending?” Sam asked.
“No,” Dad said softly. “The book is fine.”
Sam sat up. The blanket slipped to the floor.
Mom reached for Sam’s hand. Her fingers were warm. “There is something important we need to talk about.”
Sam looked from Mom to Dad. The room was still the same room. The lamp still shone. The couch was still soft. But bedtime did not feel quite the same.
“Is it about school?” Sam asked.
“No,” said Mom.
“Did I break something?”
“No,” said Dad. “You did nothing wrong.”
Sam’s tummy felt twisty, like a knot in a shoelace. “Then what is it?”
Mom and Dad moved closer. They sat on either side of Sam. Dad placed the storybook on the table. Mom held Sam’s hand with both of hers.
“Our family is going to change,” Mom said.
Sam listened very carefully.
“Mom and Dad are going to live in different homes,” Dad said.
Sam looked at the blanket, the lamp, and the unfinished story. The happy bedtime was still there, but a new and difficult talk had joined it.
“Different homes?” Sam whispered.
“Yes,” Mom said. “We will tell you more. We are right here with you.”
Dad gave Sam a hug, and Mom joined in. The hug was warm and strong, like a soft nest.
Sam did not understand everything yet. But Sam knew one thing: Mom and Dad were both holding on with love.
What kind of silly picture might Sam draw for the teddy bear’s unfinished story?
