Chapter 1
Tommy Finds the Shore
Tommy’s little feet pressed into the warm sand as he reached the beach. At once, he heard the soft hush-hush of the waves.
“Look at all that sand!” Tommy said.
The beach was wide and bright. Tiny shells sparkled near his toes. The salty air tickled his nose, and the sun felt cozy on his shell. Tommy stretched his neck and smiled. He wanted to see everything.
He followed a line of small shells along the shore. One shell was pink. One was white. One looked like a tiny moon. Tommy picked up his favorite, a smooth blue shell, and tucked it beside his front foot.
“This way must lead home,” he said.
Tommy made a row of tracks in the sand. He walked past a tall rock and around a little pool. Then he stopped to watch a foamy wave curl and pop.
When Tommy looked back, the beach seemed much longer than before.
“Oh,” he said softly.
The water had crept closer. Wave by wave, it covered his tracks. Tommy tried to follow the marks near the rock, but they were gone. He walked to the little pool, but water swished over that path too.
Tommy sat still for a moment. The sand felt warm under his belly.
“I can find another way,” he said.
He looked left. He looked right. The shore stretched on and on, like a long sandy rug. Tommy took a few steps, then saw a high dune ahead. Its soft sides were covered with beach grass that whispered in the breeze.
“That looks safe,” Tommy said.
He climbed slowly. Scritch, scratch went his feet. The climb was hard, but Tommy kept going. At the top, he found a small hollow tucked between the dune and a group of smooth stones. It was calm there, away from the rolling water.
Tommy placed his blue shell beside him.
“I found a safe place,” he said. “But the tide hid my way back.”
The waves made a gentle shushing sound below. Tommy did not feel alone. He had his shell, the warm sand, and a quiet place to rest while he thought.
Soon, he would look for a new path home. For now, Tommy watched the sea and listened to the grass sing.
