Chapter 1
First Day at Maple Street School
Lila Hart held her mother’s hand outside Maple Street School. New York buses rumbled past, and a warm cinnamon smell drifted from a bakery nearby. The school doors stood tall and shiny, like the doors to a giant toy castle.
“Room 5B,” Lila whispered. “I can find it.”
Inside, the hallway buzzed. Shoes squeaked. Lockers clanged. Voices bounced off the walls like rubber balls. Lila’s new blue backpack bumped against her knees as children hurried past.
She checked the paper in her hand. Room 5B. Third floor.
A friendly woman at the front desk pointed down the hall. “Take the stairs, then turn left.”
Lila nodded. “Thank you.”
She found the stairs, but at the top, two hallways stretched in different directions. One had windows. The other had bright yellow lockers. Lila looked at her paper again. It did not say which way to go.
She tried the window hall first. Room 5A came up. Then 5C. No 5B.
Lila’s fingers squeezed the paper. Her face felt hot. What if everyone noticed she was lost?
A girl carrying a purple lunch bag stopped nearby. “Are you looking for a room?”
Lila almost said no. Instead, she showed the paper. “5B.”
“I’m Maya,” the girl said. “I think it’s by the yellow lockers.”
They walked together. The hallway still sounded huge, but Lila noticed small clues: room numbers rose as they went, and a green star was painted beside the fifth-grade doors.
“There,” Maya said. “5B.”
Lila smiled, but then she saw an empty space beside the doorway. A paper map should have been there. Only two pieces of tape remained.
“The class map is missing,” Maya said. “It usually shows where to put our things.”
Lila touched the cool metal door handle. She had found the classroom, but now she did not know what to do next.
Maya pointed to a row of hooks. “We can ask inside.”
Lila took one slow breath. Then another. “I made a plan,” she said. “Follow the numbers, look for the green star, and ask when I need help.”
Together, they opened the door. Warm air and the smell of crayons flowed out. A teacher looked up and smiled.
“Good morning,” she said. “You must be Lila.”
Lila stepped inside, still holding the handle. She had reached the right room, but the missing map made her stomach wiggle again.
Maya stood beside her. “We’ll find out where it went.”
Lila nodded. The hallway was still loud, but she was not facing it alone. Sometimes being brave meant finding the right door - and asking someone to help you open it.
