Defending Earth From Rylons

The first alarm struck while Tomas Keene was watching a maintenance light blink red above the bunker’s eastern blast door.

It blinked twice, paused, then blinked again.

“Grid control,” Tomas said. “Report.”

The central air-defense bunker shuddered beneath Keene City. Dust sifted from the concrete ribs overhead. On the tactical wall, the city glowed in layers of blue streets and white transit lines, its towers clustered around the river like blades thrust into the night. Beyond the wall, the upper atmosphere flashed with silent light.

A second alarm joined the first. Then a third.

“Unidentified contacts crossing the stratosphere,” said Lieutenant Mara Venn from the sensor pit. “Thirty-two. No - forty-six.”

“Civilian evacuation routes?”

“Still open.”

“Then open them wider.” Tomas gripped the edge of the command table. “Push every district toward the south shelters. Shut down the river tunnels. I want the nearest defense grid active before those things reach cloud level.”

The operators moved. Fingers struck glass panels. Voices overlapped.

“South shelters are at capacity.”

“Then divert to the western stadium.”

“The stadium roof is not rated for orbital debris.”

“Neither is the city,” Tomas snapped. “Move them.”

He had spent six years trusting the grid. It had been built into the city’s foundations, fed by buried reactors and linked to every defense platform from the harbor batteries to the mountain launch fields. If the sky broke open, Keene City would answer with fire.

That was what the grid had been designed to do.

A tone cut through the bunker.

Mara looked up. “First breach.”

The tactical wall went white.

A burning object tore through the upper atmosphere above the northern districts. It left no vapor trail, only a dark wound in the clouds edged with violet fire. Another craft followed. Then five more. Their shapes shifted as they descended, folding and unfolding like black metal flowers.

“Rylon craft,” someone whispered.

Tomas felt the word strike somewhere behind his ribs.

The Rylons had been a distant threat for three months, a hostile signal beyond the moon, a handful of intercepted transmissions and dead probes. No government had admitted the scale of it. No military had confirmed an attack.

Now the sky over his city was opening for them.

“Launch Grid Seven,” Tomas said.

The operator at the eastern console froze. “Sir, authorization is - ”

“Override it.”

“We need confirmation from planetary command.”

“Planetary command is six hundred miles away. Those ships are twelve.”

The operator swallowed and pressed his palm to the authorization plate. Red light crawled across the console.

“Grid Seven refusing launch.”

“Why?”

“System lock. It says maintenance mode.”

Tomas turned toward the tactical wall. Three defense platforms beneath the northern districts remained dark. Their icons pulsed gray while Rylon craft descended through the cloud cover.

“Switch to manual.”

“Manual control is not responding.”

Mara’s voice sharpened. “More contacts. Drones separating from the main group.”

The wall filled with smaller red marks. They scattered over Keene City, slipping between towers and plunging toward the streets.

Tomas leaned over the operator’s station. “Route the grid through bunker control.”

“It’s already routed.”

“Then cut the city network.”

The operator glanced at him. “That kills power to emergency services.”

“It also breaks the lock.”

“It could shut down the shelters.”

A tremor rolled through the bunker. The lights flickered. Somewhere above them, glass exploded in a distant tower.

Tomas saw the operator’s hands shaking. He saw the evacuation map, the moving blue lines of civilians funneling toward shelter doors. He saw the red contacts spreading beneath them.

“Do it,” he said.

The operator severed the city network.

Half the tactical wall went black.

For one breath, Tomas believed he had made the right choice.

Then the dead sections came back online.

Not blue.

Red.

Every transit line in the northern districts lit at once. Power conduits. Water stations. Traffic controls. Emergency beacons. The entire urban infrastructure pulsed with a single alien signal.

Mara stared at the display. “That isn’t our network.”

“No,” Tomas said.

The bunker doors slammed shut.

A harsh metallic grinding rose through the floor. The command table vibrated under his hands. On the wall, the red lines began converging - not toward the shelters, but toward the bunker.

“Something’s inside the system,” Mara said.

“Can you isolate it?”

“I’m trying.”

A burst of static erupted from every speaker. Then a voice pushed through, distorted and wet, as if spoken through deep water.

“KEENE CITY HAS BEEN MARKED.”

The operators went silent.

Tomas grabbed the communications headset. “Identify yourself.”

The voice answered with a shriek of broken tones. Every screen in the bunker flashed with the same symbol: three hooked lines surrounding a black center.

A Rylon mark.
