Chapter 1
The Moonlit Greenhouse
Rain ticked against the greenhouse panes as Mara Voss reached for the last brass latch. Beyond the glass, the garden crouched under a bruised purple sky. Its beds flattened by the storm. Inside, vines trembled from the wind trapped in the roof vents.
“Hold the lantern higher,” Ruth called from the far aisle. “I can’t see the floor.”
Mara lifted it, though her eyes kept returning to the blue-white glow beneath the stone path. It pulsed between the rows of moon lilies, faint as a trapped firefly.
“There,” Mara said. “That light wasn’t here before the storm.”
Elias pushed a cart of broken pots toward the door. “Probably a reflection.”
“From what?”
He stopped. For one second, his face looked as pale as the wet glass. Then he turned the cart around. “Mara, leave it.”
That answer tightened something inside her. Ruth and Elias never told her to leave anything alone unless it mattered.
“I’m just going to look,” Mara said.
“Mara.”
She slipped between the tables before either of them could stop her. Warm, damp earth pressed through her shoes. Leaves brushed her sleeves, and somewhere above, a loose pane knocked again and again.
The glow came from beneath a flat stone near the oldest fig tree. Mara knelt and wedged her fingers into the crack. The stone shifted with a grinding sigh.
Under it lay a narrow passage, its walls packed with black roots. Blue light flickered below.
“Mara, come back!” Ruth shouted.
Mara lowered herself into the opening.
The passage squeezed her shoulders. Thorny roots curled across the walls, snagging her sweater and scratching her wrists. Behind her, Elias called her name, but the stone slid shut with a heavy thump.
“I’m all right!” she yelled, though the words came back in a whisper.
The passage bent left, then right. Each turn seemed to move when she looked away. At last, she saw a side door ahead, silvered by moonlight.
Then something stepped into the passage.
It had the shape of a wolf, but no fur. Its body was made of darkness folded around two pale eyes. Mara froze.
The shadow lowered its head. Her silver locket, tucked beneath her shirt, began to burn against her skin.
“Stay back,” she whispered.
The shadow sprang.
Mara threw up her hands. Heat burst from her palms, bright and green. The roots recoiled, and the shadow slammed against the wall. Mara stumbled toward the door, fumbling with the latch.
The locket chain snapped.
“No!”
Cold fingers of darkness hooked the silver pendant and dragged it away. For an instant, the wolf-shape held it in its mouth. A strange mark flashed across the locket’s face, matching the green light still spilling from Mara’s hands.
Then the shadow vanished into the roots.
Mara yanked open the side door and tumbled into the rain. Ruth caught her before she hit the mud.
“Where is it?” Mara gasped, clutching her empty neck.
Elias stared at the greenhouse door. “What did you see?”
Mara looked back at the dark glass. Something moved behind it, pacing between the moon lilies.
“My locket,” she said. “It took my locket.”
