The Knocking Under Leo’s Bed
Leo froze with one hand on his pajama drawer.
KNOCK.
KNOCK.
KNOCK.
The sound came from under his bed.
He looked at the bed. The bed looked like an ordinary bed. It had blue blankets, one missing sock, and a comic book with a bent corner.
Leo pulled on his blue hoodie over his pajamas. His messy brown hair stuck up like a startled bush. He slipped into his sneakers and crouched beside the bed.
“Hello?” he whispered.
Nothing answered.
He reached under the bed. His fingers touched dust, a toy car, and something that felt like a cold pea.

Before climbing in, Leo placed a pillow beside the bed.
“If you knock again,” he whispered, “I’ll be ready.”
