Chapter 1

Rocky Meets Liku in Beijing

Rocky’s paws touched the warm Beijing pavement, and a bright world rushed around him.

Bicycles hummed past. Red paper lanterns swung above a lively street. The air smelled of steamed buns, sweet fruit, and fresh flowers. Rocky lifted his nose and listened through the many sounds.

Then he saw Liku.

She stood beside a green courtyard gate, her little tail wagging fast. A family gathering filled the courtyard behind her. Rocky saw bowls on a long table, colorful cloths, and smiling faces. Liku’s eyes shone when she spotted him.

“Rocky!” she called.

Rocky hurried toward her. He had traveled a long way to reach Beijing, but seeing Liku made every step feel easy. She was a small dog with soft cream fur and one brown spot above her eye. Rocky loved that spot. He loved the way her ears bounced when she ran.

They met beside the gate and touched noses.

“You came,” Liku said.

“I promised I would,” Rocky replied.

For a moment, the busy street seemed quiet. Rocky could feel the soft fur on Liku’s cheek. He could smell the warm food from the courtyard. He felt happy and safe beside her.

Liku turned toward the gate. “Come meet my family.”

Rocky followed her inside. The courtyard stones were smooth beneath his paws. A small tree spread green leaves above the table, and red lanterns made bright spots of color in the afternoon light.

Liku’s family gathered around them. They welcomed Rocky with gentle pats and warm smiles. One family member placed a little bowl of water near his paws. Another set down a round bun that smelled delicious.

Rocky gave a shy bark.

Liku leaned against him. “This is Rocky,” she told her family. “He traveled all the way to see me.”

Rocky’s tail swept across the stones. He wanted to stay close to Liku and remember every sound, smell, and smile.

But the courtyard gate stood open to the busy street. Every few moments, a bicycle bell rang outside. A cart rolled by with a soft wooden rattle. People talked as they passed.

Liku looked toward the gate. “I want to show you the red lantern shop,” she said. “It is just across the street.”

Rocky glanced at the family and then back at Liku. He wanted to see everything with her. He also noticed how many feet and wheels moved beyond the gate.

“Stay close,” he said.

“I will,” Liku promised.

They stepped into the street together. Rocky walked beside Liku, shoulder to shoulder. The pavement felt warm, and the air carried the smell of noodles and oranges. Above them, strings of lanterns swayed in the breeze.

At first, the walk was easy. Liku pointed out a blue sign and a stall filled with paper flowers. Rocky watched a tiny red kite dance above the rooftops.

Then a group of people came around the corner.

They were not rushing, but there were many of them. A cart rolled between Rocky and Liku. A bicycle bell rang. Someone carried a large basket of flowers, and the flowers brushed Rocky’s nose.

He sneezed.

“Rocky?” Liku called.

“I’m here!” he answered.

He tried to move around the cart, but a second cart passed in front of him. The wheels made a soft bump-bump sound over the stones. Rocky could still see Liku’s cream fur, but she was farther away now.

“Liku, wait!”

Liku stopped near a red lantern stand. She looked back and lowered her head so she could see him.

“Follow my voice!” she called.

Rocky took one step forward. A bicycle rolled between them. The rider rang the bell and slowed down. No one was hurt, but Rocky’s paws froze for a moment.

The street felt too wide.

He ducked beside the cart and tried to find a clear path. A warm gust carried the scent of buns past him. He followed the smell by mistake and ended up beside a food stall.

Liku’s voice sounded faintly behind him. “Rocky!”

Rocky turned in a circle. He saw lanterns, baskets, wheels, and moving feet. Every red lantern looked the same.

He had wanted to stay close to Liku, but now he could not see her.

Rocky’s ears drooped. He had thought being brave meant going forward quickly. Now he understood that brave could also mean stopping and listening.

He sat beside the stall and called, “Liku!”

For a moment, he heard only bells and voices.

Then a soft bark answered from the other side of the cart.

“Rocky?”

He sprang up. Liku’s nose appeared beneath the cart’s wooden side. Rocky hurried around it, and they met beside a stack of empty baskets.

Liku pressed close to him. “I was looking everywhere.”

“So was I,” Rocky said.

“I thought you had gone back to the courtyard.”

“I thought you had gone to the lantern shop.”

They looked at each other. The street still bustled around them, but neither dog moved.

Liku touched Rocky’s paw with hers. “Next time, we stop when we cannot see each other.”

Rocky nodded. “And we stay beside the same thing.”

They chose a wide stone step near the courtyard gate. It was close enough for the family to see them, and far from the carts. Liku’s family watched from the gate and waved.

The two dogs sat together while the street flowed around them. Rocky noticed details he had missed before: the cool stone beneath him, the gentle swing of the lanterns, and the sweet smell of fruit from a nearby stall.

Liku rested her head against his shoulder.

“I am glad you came,” she said.

“I am glad I found you,” Rocky replied.

A sudden loud clatter broke through the street. A tall stack of empty boxes tipped from a handcart. The boxes fell across the path with a noisy crash. The cart rolled a short distance, and people quickly stepped back.

No one was hurt, but the sound startled Rocky. Liku jumped toward the gate. Rocky followed, but a bicycle stopped between them.

“Liku!” Rocky barked.

“I’m here!” she called.

The crowd began moving around the boxes. Rocky could see Liku for one second, then she vanished behind a bright blue cloth. He tried to follow, but the path closed with carts and baskets.

His paws carried him toward the courtyard gate. Liku’s family called from inside.

“Rocky, come this way!”

Rocky ran toward the familiar voices. The gate was open, and the courtyard waited beyond it. He reached the stone step and turned at once.

“Liku!”

He could not see her.

The family moved the fallen boxes aside with care. The cart was pulled away from the street, and the bicycles passed slowly. The danger was over, but Liku was not beside Rocky.

He stood at the gate, looking left and right. The street smelled of dust, flowers, and warm bread. Lanterns swayed above him. People walked past, but Liku’s cream fur was nowhere in sight.

Rocky’s tail hung low.

A moment later, a small bark came from behind the red lantern stand.

Rocky lifted his head.

“Rocky!”

Liku came running around the stand. A blue cloth had caught lightly on one of her paws, slowing her down. She had pulled free and followed the sound of his bark.

Rocky raced to her. They bumped noses, then pressed close together.

“I found you,” Liku whispered.

“You found me,” Rocky said.

Liku’s family hurried from the courtyard and gathered around them. The cloth was removed from Liku’s paw. She was safe. Rocky was safe. The fallen boxes were stacked neatly beside the wall, and the street had become calm again.

Back inside the courtyard, Liku and Rocky shared the round bun. The family filled their water bowls and sat nearby. The lanterns glowed as evening came, and the stone beneath Rocky’s paws slowly cooled.

Liku leaned against him. “Tomorrow, we can explore again.”

Rocky looked at the open gate. He still wanted to see Beijing with Liku, but he also remembered how quickly the busy street had hidden her.

“Tomorrow,” he said, “we stay where we can touch paws.”

Liku smiled and touched his paw.

Rocky had found Liku, met her family, and shared a happy welcome, but the busy street had shown him that staying close took care and teamwork. Love means staying together and listening when the world grows loud.
