Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

Your marriage finds a steadier direction when both of you place the relationship - not merely the problems - under God’s care.

A fresh start doesn’t always begin with a dramatic change. Sometimes it begins with a quiet decision at the kitchen table: “Lord, our marriage belongs to You. Lead us.” That sentence can feel simple, but it changes the posture of a home. Instead of treating marriage as something you must manage by yourselves, you acknowledge God as the One who designed covenant love and remains present in it.

Trusting God with your marriage doesn’t mean ignoring hard conversations, financial pressure, parenting decisions, or old hurts. It means you don’t carry them as if everything depends on your wisdom, timing, or ability to stay calm. Proverbs tells us not to lean only on our own understanding. That includes the understanding formed by exhaustion, disappointment, or a tense text message sent at the wrong moment.

Reflection

Feelings matter in marriage. Joy, affection, attraction, frustration, and sadness all tell you something about what’s happening inside. But feelings are changing weather. Covenant faithfulness is the steady ground beneath it. Love may feel warm and easy one day, then costly and patient the next. God’s design calls you to remain faithful in both kinds of days - not because emotions are unimportant, but because love is more durable than emotion.

Covenant faithfulness shows up in ordinary choices. It looks like telling the truth about a purchase instead of hiding it. It means listening to your spouse’s concern before preparing your defense. It means keeping a promise when nobody is applauding. It means asking forgiveness without adding, “but you also…” It may even mean taking a ten-minute pause during an argument so that your words remain honest and kind. Biblical love is not measured only by what we feel; it is revealed by whom we choose to honor.

That choice isn’t meant to be made through willpower alone. The Holy Spirit leads you into patience, humility, self-control, and truth. He may prompt you to pray before replying, to soften your tone, or to revisit a conversation you hoped would simply disappear. His leading often feels practical. It can sound like, “Listen first,” or “Tell the truth,” or “Go make peace.” When you invite the Spirit into your marriage, you’re not asking for a vague sense of calm. You’re asking God to shape your next words, your next action, and your next response.

Placing your marriage under God’s care also gives you permission to begin again. Perhaps the two of you have drifted into separate routines. Maybe affection has been crowded out by work, children, caregiving, or constant notifications. Perhaps one conversation keeps circling without resolution. A fresh start doesn’t deny those realities. It brings them honestly before God and says, “We need Your help here.” You don’t have to solve the next ten years today. With the Spirit’s help, you can take the next faithful step.

Practice for Today

1. Name your marriage before God. Set a timer for five minutes and sit together without phones, television, or other distractions. Hold hands if that feels comfortable. Begin with a simple sentence: “Father, we place our marriage in Your care.” Then each of you pray one short request for the Holy Spirit’s leadership. Keep it specific - wisdom about money, patience with the children, courage for a difficult conversation, or renewed tenderness.

2. Journal honestly about covenant love. Write for ten minutes using this prompt: Where have I been measuring my love mainly by my feelings, and what would covenant faithfulness look like in that place today? You might write, “I feel distant, but faithfulness could mean asking my spouse how they’re really doing and listening without interrupting.” Don’t use this exercise to make a case against your spouse. Let it reveal the step God is placing in your own hands.

3. Take one Spirit-led action before the day ends. Choose a small act that honors your covenant. Keep a promise you’ve delayed. Send a message of appreciation. Apologize for a specific word or action. Offer practical help before being asked. Before you do it, pause and pray, “Holy Spirit, guide my attitude and my words.” Notice how obedience can come before a change in feelings. Sometimes affection grows after faithfulness has made room for it.

A marriage under God’s care is not a marriage without weakness. It’s a marriage that knows where to bring its weakness. Today, you’re not being asked to manufacture perfect feelings or fix every unresolved issue. You’re being invited to trust God with the relationship and to practice faithful love in one clear, ordinary way.
