Chapter 1
The Forest Path Home
The school bell rang, and Kudzai packed her books into her small bag. Outside, warm air smelled of dust and green leaves. Birds chirped in the trees of the Zimbabwean forest.
Kudzai waved goodbye to her teacher and stepped onto the path. Home was waiting beyond the trees. Her shoes made soft taps on the brown earth.
“I know this way,” Kudzai said, holding her bag close.
The path curled between tall trees and bright flowers. Sunlight made little gold spots on the ground. Then a bush rustled beside her.
Kudzai stopped.
“Who is there?” she asked softly.
The leaves shook again. Kudzai took one small step back. She did not run. She listened.
A tiny bird flew out of the bush and landed on a branch. It gave a happy chirp.
Kudzai smiled. “Oh! It was only you.”
She walked on, but the path looked different now. One part was covered with dry leaves. Another part was hidden by tall grass. Kudzai looked for the smooth stones she remembered.
“Where did the path go?” she whispered.
She tried the leafy way first. Crunch, crunch went her shoes. But soon the path became too narrow. A twig brushed her dress, and Kudzai turned around.
“Not this way,” she said.
She tried the grassy way. The grass tickled her knees. Then she saw fresh animal tracks in the soft mud. They were small, but she did not know which animal had made them.
Kudzai moved back to the clear path. She remembered what her teacher always said: “Stop, look, and listen.”
So Kudzai stopped. She looked at the trees, the stones, and the sky. She listened to the birds and the gentle wind.
Ahead, the path split into two branches. One went left beneath wide leaves. The other went right beside a little stream.
Kudzai held her bag with both hands. She had reached the fork, but she could not tell which way led home.
The forest was quiet and sunny around her. Kudzai took a slow breath and stood still, ready to look for a kind clue.
