The Mill That Roared
The car slid around a bend and the trees opened like a green curtain. Mama lifted Jipsy’s face to the window, her hair a long, bright river on her mother's lap, and watched sunlight skip over the hills. The tires hummed and the air smelled of wet moss and warm earth. Far ahead, the world suddenly grew louder - water shouting over rocks - and Jipsy giggled with excitement.
"Do you hear it?" Mama asked, smiling down at Jipsy as she lifted her so she could see better. Jipsy's small hands fluttered at the noise, her eyes bright and wide. Mama carried her on through the parking patch of gravel, boots tapping, wind brushing Jipsy's hair against her cheek. The roar of the water grew into a happy shout that seemed to bounce off the mill's old red walls when they stepped closer.
The mill smelled of old wood and river spray. Heavy beams held up the ceiling, and sunlight made warm squares on the floor. Sometimes Jipsy frowned for a breath when she wanted something sooner, but then a smile chased the frown when she felt the spoon's smooth curve. The gentleness of waiting and sharing made the day warm.
Mama carried Jipsy close as they walked out the back of the mill. Water smashed and curled, bright as a ribbon, and the sun made a spray of tiny rainbows. Jipsy, soundless but shining in the breath taking view of turquoise water. Mama hugged her close as they hiked the trail around the spring, exploring the cliffs and caves while the roaring waters played like a friendly song that promised more days of exploring.
