The Brave Little Dragon Who Couldn’t Roar

Pip tucked his tail under his little chin and listened to the morning steam from the warm tea pots. The Dragon School yard smelled like pine needles and honey buns. Soft sunlight made the stones shine, and the fountain went plip-plip, like it was keeping time for everyone.

Pip was tiny, so tiny his footsteps sounded like pebbles in a sock. He stood near a patch of springy moss where the other dragons stretched their wings. Big dragons practiced big sounds-BOOM, ROAR, WHOOSH. Pip tried to copy them, but when he opened his mouth wide, only a squeak popped out, small as a mouse saying hello.

“Again!” called a dragon with shiny scales. “Let it shake the air!”

Pip swallowed. His cheeks felt hot. “I… I can do it,” he whispered to himself, then tried. “Rrrrooo-” Squeak.

His squeak floated up like a bubble and popped on the breeze. Pip’s ears drooped. You could hear the other roars rolling across the yard, while Pip’s sound stayed stuck inside him, like a toy that wouldn’t open.

You know that feeling when you want to say something, but it comes out wrong? Pip felt it now.

“We’re making the Roar Parade sound today,” said a teacher dragon with kind eyes. “Your voice helps everyone know where to go.”

Pip looked at the parade rope, bright red and coiled neatly. He also looked at the other dragons, who were grinning and practicing. “What if my sound is too small?” Pip asked you with his worried eyes. His tail tip tapped the ground, tap-tap, like it was trying to be brave for him.

Then Pip noticed something. Near the moss, a little bell sat on a stump. It was quiet, but when he touched it gently, it chimed tin-tin-tin. The sound was small, but it still traveled. Pip leaned closer, breathed in like you might smell a warm cinnamon roll, and tried again.

“Tin-tin,” he said softly, and he felt his throat loosen. He touched the bell once more. “Tin-tin!” His squeak was still there, but now it wasn’t lonely. It had a place.

A young dragon beside him blinked. “That’s a nice sound,” she said. “I can hear you.”

Pip smiled a little. “I think my voice can be small and still help.”

The teacher dragon nodded. “In a parade, you don’t only need thunder. You need clear sounds, too.”

So Pip stood by the parade rope and chimed his bell while the others roared. Tin-tin guided the line forward, and BOOM made it feel exciting. Pip’s quiet sound fit right beside the big ones, like a small drum keeping the beat.

One warm lesson settled in Pip’s heart: Your voice can be gentle and still be brave.
