Unite Against The Demon Horde

The last bell at Brindlewatch hung upside down in its cracked iron frame, ringing whenever the wind shoved through the tower’s broken ribs.

Elowen Varric heard it before she saw the ruins. A thin, uneven note trembled across the hills, vanishing beneath the clatter of her boots on frozen shale. She tightened her grip on the message tube at her belt and climbed faster.

The beacon had been dark for seventy years. If the rumors were true, its fire had spoken again.

She reached the ridge and dropped behind a slab of fallen stone. Below, Brindlewatch sprawled across the valley like a giant’s shattered crown. The beacon tower had split down the middle, its upper chamber collapsed into the courtyard. Blackened pillars rose from the rubble, and old signal mirrors lay scattered among the weeds, their silver faces clouded with age.

But the ruins were not empty.

Campfires burned beneath the broken walls.

Elowen counted them by color and shape. Human lanterns near the eastern gate, shielded beneath canvas. Dwarf braziers glowing red beside a line of squat wagons. A pale blue flame burned in a hollow where the tower’s foundation had cracked. Drow magic, if her eyes did not deceive her.

Her pulse quickened - not with fear, not yet. Hope was more dangerous. Hope made careless scouts run into open ground.

She studied the valley again. A human sentry paced beside the gate. A dwarf in a steel helm argued with two soldiers near the wagons. At the blue fire stood a slender figure cloaked in black, motionless as a spear.

The gathering was real.

Elowen slid the message tube free. Inside lay the torn strip of parchment taken from a dead courier three days earlier. The writing had been cramped and smeared, but one phrase remained clear: When Brindlewatch burns, the eastern road opens.

She had come to learn whether the beacon had sent that warning - or whether someone had forged it to draw the armies into a trap.

A horn sounded below.

Every campfire went dark.

Elowen flattened herself against the stone. The human sentry raised his lantern, then lowered it as a second horn answered from the valley’s far side.

Not human. Not dwarf.

The sound crawled through the ground.

“Show yourself,” called a man from the ruins. “If you came for the gathering, come with empty hands.”

Elowen rose slowly. “If I came with empty hands, your sentries would already be dead.”

Bows appeared along the broken wall. She lifted both hands, palms open, and stepped into view.

The man who had spoken wore a red cloak over battered chain mail. He was broad-shouldered, gray-eyed, and young enough to still believe armor could make him invincible.

“Elf,” he said.

“Human,” Elowen replied. “We have both made observations.”

A dwarf stomped toward them, beard braided with copper rings. His hand rested on the haft of a war hammer. “Name.”

“Elowen Varric, scout of the western groves. I carry warning from the Ashen March.”

The dwarf’s eyes narrowed. “The Ashen March has no scouts left.”

“Then you should be pleased to meet one.”

The human captain glanced toward the valley. “What warning?”

“Demons are moving east. Not raiders. A horde.” Elowen unhooked the tube and tossed it across the stones. “That message brought me here. I need to know who lit the beacon.”

The captain caught the tube. Before he could open it, the drow stepped from the blue fire.

She was taller than Elowen expected, with silver hair pulled tight against her skull and a narrow blade resting at her hip. Her eyes reflected the dying blue flames.

“No one lit it,” the drow said. “It woke.”

The dwarf snorted. “Beacons do not wake.”

“This one did,” she answered. “Three nights ago, a pulse of light crossed the valley. Every creature beneath it heard a voice.”

Elowen looked at the ruined tower. “What did it say?”

The drow’s gaze settled on her. “Run east. They are already beneath us.”

A dull thud rolled through the ground.

Dust slipped from the broken stones.

The human captain opened the parchment. His face lost what little color it had. “This seal belongs to Lord Halren.”

“Who is he?” Elowen asked.

“The commander of the eastern host,” said the dwarf. “He was meant to arrive tomorrow.”

Another thud sounded, closer this time. The blue fire bent sideways though no wind moved through the courtyard.

Elowen turned toward the valley. The grass along the southern slope rippled in a widening line. Not wind. Something passed beneath it.

“Get your people inside the ruins,” she said.

The captain stared at her. “You give orders here?”

“No. I recognize an ambush.”

The ground split.

A black limb punched through the earth below the western wall, scattering stones. It ended in three hooked claws, each one longer than a sword. A second limb tore free beside it. Then the soil erupted, and a demon hauled itself into the moonlight.

It had a body like a burned stag stretched over a man’s frame, its ribs exposed beneath plates of red flesh. Smoke leaked from its mouth....
