Chapter 1
The Notice on the Fridge
“Daddy, the milk is gone.”
Lily tipped the empty carton over her bowl. One white drop landed on her spoon.
Mia peered into the fridge. “The cheese is gone too.”
Marcus stood at the sink, holding the final eviction notice. The paper shook in his hand. Behind him, the kitchen hummed with the soft buzz of the old fridge. Inside were half a banana, three crackers, and a jar of peanut butter with a hard brown ring at the bottom.
“Crackers,” he said. “And peanut butter.”
“Peanut butter makes my tongue stick,” Mia said.
“Then we’ll give your tongue a tiny adventure.”
The girls giggled. Marcus spread the last peanut butter across the crackers. He made two little faces with crumbs for eyes. Lily ate one. Mia pushed hers around the plate.
A red envelope lay beside his elbow. FINAL EVICTION WARNING.
Under it sat another letter. The seal had a picture of a blue bird. Marcus had not opened it. He knew letters with seals did not bring good news.
Lily reached for it. “Is that for Mommy?”
The room went quiet.
Marcus folded the paper before she could touch it. “No, bug. It’s for Daddy.”
Mommy had died in an accident. Since then, every bill, every empty cupboard, and every quiet night seemed to ask him what he was going to do next.
A knock struck the front door.
Both girls froze.
Marcus pulled them close. Their hair smelled like soap and peanut butter. “Stay here.”
He opened the door only a crack. A woman stood on the step with a clipboard.
“Marcus Wright?”
“Yes.”
“I’m with the county family services agency. We received a report about the children’s living conditions.”
His fingers tightened on the door.
“They’re safe,” he said.
“I need to speak with you about an assessment.”
“Today?”
“Soon. The agency is concerned about housing and food security.”
Behind him, Mia whispered, “Daddy?”
The woman looked past his shoulder. Marcus shut the door.
He opened the sealed letter with a butter knife. His eyes moved down the page. Custody review. Home assessment. Possible temporary placement.
His knees weakened.
At the bottom was a phone number: Legal Aid Clinic. Help with family cases.
He called. After three rings, a calm woman answered.
“Legal Aid Clinic.”
“I need help,” Marcus said. “They may take my daughters.”
“Your name?”
“Marcus Wright.”
“Mr. Wright, we can schedule an appointment. But the agency has requested a home assessment tomorrow morning.”
Tomorrow.
Lily took his hand. Mia leaned against his leg.
Marcus looked at the empty fridge, the red notice, and his girls.
“Then I’ll be here,” he said. “And I’ll be ready.”
The woman gave him the appointment time.
It was the first door that had opened all day. It was also another door he had to keep from closing.
